While a Sinn Fein county councillor in Tipperary in 2017, Martin Browne shared a Facebook link to an article from yournewswire.com, a notorious fake-news website based in America. Using pseudoscience, the “story” claimed no planes hit the Twin Towers in New York on 9/11, but the US might have used holograms to simulate the attack.
It was not the first time Browne had spread this wild 9/11 theory. He posted a YouTube video in 2015 showing a computer-generated whale in a school gymnasium as “proof” that the Twin Towers attacks could have been faked. “It would make you wonder,” wrote Browne, who has also shared a post claiming that the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad did not use chemical weapons on civilians.
Browne lost his council seat in the local elections last year, coming ninth in a seven-seat ward. However, surfing on the Sinn Fein wave in February’s general election, he finished second in Tipperary and took a Dail seat.
