Terence "Digger" Moore

We the daughters and immediate family of the late republican Terence "Digger" Moore firmly feel that we have no choice but to publicly protect his republicanism and his strongly held beliefs. Sadly, as he is no longer with us, we feel an obligation to put the record straight regarding his republican beliefs and allegiances.

We do not court publicity. What we do is with one objective firmly in mind: have our father remembered the way he wanted to be remembered.

His memory has been sullied. No matter how much we have tried to express our daddy's wishes, begged, cried to them and pleaded with both Sinn Fein and his brothers - they haven't listened to us, his next of kin. For this reason, and no other, we are putting out this statement so that the misrepresentation of Digger's republicanism stops. And if it doesn't stop, at least people will now be aware of what has happened, how our daddy did not want any of this, how we've explained numerous times to a few of his brothers that our daddy made it clear to us, if he ever died what he wanted and what he did not want.

Hijacking Digger Moore

We are speaking openly and honestly about how our daddy's final wishes were ignored and more or less just threw in the bin. We do not want our daddy's death to be used in any way that could dilute what he believed in. Digger was an unrepentant republican. Digger like thousands before him gained nothing from the Good Friday Agreement but he did not feel aggrieved at this.

Our father did not support the Good Friday Agreement. Our father did not support Sinn Fein. Digger believed the GFA to be a sell-out and a betrayal of every thread of Republicanism.

Our father was vehemently opposed to the Trojan horse that became known as the normalisation of policing. The façade of the RUC becoming the PSNI. He saw through it. He thought for himself. He spoke for himself. He openly expressed to his family and anyone who knew him how much he despised Sinn Fein and how horribly they treated him personally.

Now we need to be clear. We the children of Digger were SF voters. But it is not about us. It is about him. As his immediate family we have to protect his own republicanism not our own political allegiances.

Not long after we sadly lost our father a number of his brothers made it known to us that his name was going to be printed in the Sinn Fein book of remembrance. They had not asked our opinion. It was put to us as an accomplished fact.

We made the decision to go and approach SF at their local office. We made it clear that this scenario was not to go ahead, that our father would not want remembered in this book. We were horrified to be told "there is nothing I can do, it was already wrote in".

We left that office with so many questions but we were in a state of shock by that point. We approached someone who we believed was in a higher position of authority in SF. They assured us Digger's name was not in the book as of yet. But as he so demeaningly put it, we were 'grieving so check back in six months."

After a number of months we rang the SF office to inquire about the book, The call was answered by a female who treated us with contempt and who lacked all empathy at such a raw time in our lives. After we calmed ourselves we rang back and got speaking to a lovely woman who said she would check for us and call us back. When the call came it was like a dagger to our hearts. She confirmed that our father's name was printed in the book. So it's clear that a select few of our father's brothers totally ignored us but more importantly ignored our daddy and his republican beliefs to satisfy their own egos.

If this book of remembrance wasn't linked to SF then there would be no issue. Even though we were SF supporters (up until this point) we didn't even want to put his name in the book because that would be us "honouring" our egos, not honouring and respecting our daddy's dying wishes and everything he stood for.

But what has now become clear for us as a family is the realisation that they abused the fact that we were totally all over the place at the wake and funeral. Even though we explained in detail the wishes of our daddy and how he wanted his funeral carried out, they just ignored everything and steamrolled over what we had explained.

We now know that a text was sent around to SF members calling on them to turn out "together in your numbers". They went to EX POP who our daddy had already arranged to be buried by. They told EX POP they were not to bring the national flag and that there would be no display of beret and gloves. But this was against our father's wishes. He wanted the beret and gloves to adorn his coffin. He deserved his funeral. He had earned it.

To us, the people responsible for overriding Digger's wishes are bullies. Unbeknown to us they pushed SF members forward at the funeral to carry our daddy's coffin. We did not know this as we were distraught with grief.

We believe this was to deny close friends and former comrades the final chance to show our daddy their respect. We only learned all of this after watching videos his brothers made. We are disgusted as a family. Our daddy would be turning in his grave at what happened and how things have turned out. We are so sorry for his close friends who had been there for him over the years. They were denied the chance to carry our daddy due to strangers being called forward at his funeral. This has been torturing us mentally since the week our daddy died and its still ongoing six months on.

All we want as his family is for him to rest in peace and for us to grieve the great loss we have endured. Families are meant to support one another not destroy someone's legacy for selfish reasons. We just want everyone to know the truth. And the truth is we are defending our daddy because others sullied what he stood for. We meant the world to him and he meant the world to us.

Daddy "Digger", we are trying to put right what was denied to you. All our love. Now rest in peace.

  1. Terrible states of affairs when a family's wished are ignored by British Colonial Enforcers 'Sinn Fein', sadly, the Moore family are not the first to have their wished hijacked by these anti-republicans, and won't be the last.

    1. People should be buried the way they asked to be. Really sad for the daughters of Digger. If somebody asks to be buried by Sinn Fein, no other body would have the right to move in and bury them in a manner they had not wanted.
