Barry Gilheany ✒ One of the most disturbing aspects of the Covid era has been the massive fillip given to anti-vaccination movement and the related route it has provided to far right and other types of violent extremism.

Anti-vaccination movements can trace their lineage to the 19th century with the discovery of the smallpox vaccine and the resistance to compulsory vaccination measures instituted by public health authorities in the UK and US. \

Despite the impact of such punitive campaigns on working class and minority ethnic communities and unethical and racist medical research programmes such as the Tuskegee syphilis experiment on African Americans in Tennessee from 1932-72; the demographic of anti-vax campaigners has barely changed: white, middle-class, and largely female. They are often spearheaded by mothers who blame a given vaccine for the death or injury of a child such as Lora Little,[1] founder of the American Liberty League, in 1915 who blamed the smallpox vaccine for the death of her son Kenneth (he actually died from measles and diptheria) and Barbara Loe Fisher,[2] the leading light of anti-vaxxers in the USA in the 1980s, who believed the pertussis vaccine caused her son’s disabilities. And despite the refutation of Dr Andrew Wakefield’s notorious hypothesis of a causal link between the MMR vaccine and autism by virtually every scientific authority and adult autistic campaign body; sadly, some parents persist in this belief.

Utter distrust of doctors, public health officials and vaccine manufacturers are traditional staples of the modus operandi of the campaigners just mentioned. But with the onset of Covid and associated regimes of lockdowns, strict social distancing, and resultant socio-economic stresses; the anti-vax movement now attracts those engaged in anti-truth, anti-science, and anti-expert politics. This new demographic is constituted by what the psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich described as “people in trouble” – the raw material of early fascism. They are attracting ex-soldiers; young mothers duped by stories that their children will be used as “guinea pigs;” Christian fundamentalists and hard-core adherents of conspiracy theories such as those who hang onto every word that figures such as Piers Corbyn and David Icke utters. In the opinion of the left-wing writer Paul Mason, the 21st century anti-vax movement is attracting a much larger number of low-income people, those disproportionately affected by vaccine passports and lockdown mandated confinement at home, than mainstream politics does.[3]

A Cocktail of Conspiracies

For this new generation of anti-vax opponents, complete mistrust or, more accurately, hostility to the “mainstream media” and to governments are absolute givens. The claims made by them are manifold and bordering on the deranged. They assert that the virus is less lethal than a seasonal flu; that death records have been falsified to exaggerate the impact of the disease, and that the vaccine is experimental and causes more adverse reactions and deaths than all other vaccines put together. They allege that scientific evidence has been suppressed in order to privilege approved agencies. Those behind the “crime” of “Covid Fraud” and “Global Genocide” are said to include governments and the World Economic Forum.[4].

Anecdotal experience of conversations with or viewing of the Twitter and Facebook handles of Covid denialists and vaccine opponents will likely find support for at least one and possibly more of the following positions: that the 2020 US Presidential election was “stolen”; that the Ukraine War is the result of the World Economic Forum, George Soros, NATO, Joe Biden and Barrack Obama using “Neo-Nazis” to suppress Russian speakers in the Donbass; climate change denial; that global elites are behind mass immigration into Europe; that Covid was really about the Great Reset of the Global Economy and that Bill Gates is a eugenicist who seeks to reduce the world’s population.

It is worthwhile for a moment to briefly consider and refute definitively the two most arguably popularly believed and toxic elements of the anti-vaxxer smorgasbord of conspiracies; Bill Gates and his “depopulation” vaccine and that Covid vaccines are “experimental” drugs the administration of which are violations of the Nuremberg Code.

Bill Gates and the “Depopulation” Vaccine

The claim that Covid19 vaccines are linked to population control dates from a clip in Bill Gates’ 2010 TED Talk. In the viral video, Bill Gates can be heard saying “we could lower that (population growth) by perhaps 10 or 15%." Ezra Levant , a journalist at the Canadian News Portal Rebel News tweeted out the video saying, “Bill Gates on vaccines & depopulation” and quoted the billionaire saying, “(…) First we’ve got population … if we do really a great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by perhaps 10 or 15%.[5]

Ezra’s tweet amassed over 47,000 views and over 2,000 likes within the first 15 hours of the post. Other verified Twitter handles with tens of thousands of followers also shared the video of Gates’ 2010 and 2015 TED Talks suggesting the pandemic was orchestrated.[6]

The truth is that that the viral clip is a snippet from the 27-minute and 30-second TALK video titled “Innovating to Zero”. In it, Gates discusses the adverse effects of climate change and highlights ways to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions. At three minutes and 45 seconds, Gates explains that the CO2 emission is proportional to the global population along with services used by each person, the energy consumption per service, and the CO2 released per unit of energy consumed.

He further explains that, in order to reduce CO2, there is a need to curb the unsustainable levels of population growth. It was in this context, that of the environmentally ruinous levels of population growth, that he said:

The world today has 6.8 billion people. That’s headed up to about nine billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by, perhaps 10 or 15 per cent. But there we see an increase of about 1.3.

The Nuremberg Code

Opponents of vaccine mandates, or Covid vaccines more broadly, frequently make the inflammatory claim that the vaccines violate the Nuremberg Code was drawn up in 1947 as a direct response to the medical experiment atrocities that Nazi doctors such as Dr Joseph Mengele performed on prisoners in the concentration camps during World War II. Anti-vaxxers argue that Covid vaccines are experimental, and that people have been coerced into vaccination. According to their logic, this constitutes a violation of the Nuremberg Code drawn up after the trial of Nazi doctors at Nuremberg in 1947.[7]

The Code is a ten-point document which details the process of seeking legally valid voluntary consent, covers the need to establish the humanitarian nature and purpose of the experiment, as well as ensuring the scientific integrity and obligations of the investigator to the subjects’ welfare.

However, the Nuremberg Code is no longer used to guide research ethics having been replaced by the World Medical Association’s Helsinki Declaration of 1964 and other ethical guidance [8]

But the introduction of a vaccine mandate is not medical research but rather a public health intervention. In every setting where Covid vaccines are mandated, no-one is being forced to be vaccinated against their will or consent. Informed consent is still sought before vaccination, and people retain the right to choose whether to be vaccinated.[9]

As the pioneers of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, Professor Sarah Gilbert, and Dr. Catherine Green, patiently explain,[10] the AZ vaccine went through the full gamut of clinical trials; was composed and developed according to the highest scientific qualitative standards and was licenced by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). In the US it was licenced by its equivalent body, the Federal Food and Drug Safety Administration.

The Ideological Complexion of Anti-Vaxxers

The central dogma of anti-vaccine ideology is that vaccines cause autism and other had heath effects, and that governments and the pharmaceutical industry knowingly suppress this information. Closely related to this mistrust of government and Big Pharma is a pursuit of purity; that nature is inherently good and a “natural immunity theory” whereby anti-Covid measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing intended to prevent the spread of germs weaken our immune system.[11]. This leftish, environmental impression of ant-vaccine sentiment finds expression in the public persona of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Democrat, and environmentalist who as the Chair of the Children’s Health Defence is a major figure on the US anti-vaccination scene.[12].

Anti-vaxxers are fundamentally of a conspiratorial mindset. Interviews with Australian parents’ vaccine refuseniks have revealed a self-perception of themselves as virtuous but oppressed and a perception of vaccinators as an “Unhealthy Other.” Research into the anti-vaxxer phenomenon across twenty-four countries conducted by a University of Queensland team identified more conspiratorial beliefs among those also identifying as anti-vax especially in Western nations like Canada, the US and UK; more anti-vax attitudes among conservative participants and a link between anti-vax attitudes and resistance to having their freedom taken away from them.[13]

Anti-vax sentiment does draw upon legitimate concerns about tracking devices, justifiable mistrust of billionaires and large organisations; the knowledge that most large nations have dabbled in bioweapons research; much less warranted (but not totally baseless) fears of new vaccines and inchoate but understandable confusion about medical patents and virus naming structures. For example, the fact that multiple coronavirus vaccines use the virus’ RNA can be misinterpreted into the fear that vaccines will mutate our own DNA.[14]

However, anti-vaxxers’ devotion to the notion of a grand conspiracy such as the Great Reset of “Plandemic” in the context of Covid and their automatic attribution of bad actor status to governments and pharmaceutical corporations make their movement fertile territory for the emergence even more nefarious ideologies and movements.

“Global Genocide”

“End the Covid Fraud and Global Genocide Now” was the title of a leaflet pushed through the door of the London Home of the prominent left-wing author Paul Mason. It claims the Covid vaccine is killing people: it stated that the virus is “less lethal than a strong seasonal flu;” that death records have been “falsified” to exaggerate the impact of the disease and that the vaccine is experimental and is “in fact a gene-modifying injection. causing more adverse reactions and deaths than all other vaccines together.” It adds that scientific debate has been suppressed to give voice “only to approved agencies.” Those behind the “crime” are said to include governments and the World Economic Forum.[15]

For Paul Mason, this ludicrous theory converges at key points with modern fascist thinking. The first is the allegation articulated through the Great Replacement Theory (GRT) of the French writer Renaud Camus’ imagination that immigration to largely white Euro-American countries combined with falling white birth rates is a form of genocide. [16] The notorious Irish far-right figure Gemma O’Doherty draws upon the GRT in the latest edition of The Irish Light, the anti-vax free newspaper which she jointly edits with another prominent far right figure John Waters, when she rails against the erosion of the indigenous Irish population by immigration and the damage being supposedly done to the fabric of the Irish nation by “welfare migrants”.

Next is the language of resistance to an “occupying power.” as expounded by the British anti-vaxxer group The White Rose. The name of the group is borrowed from the Catholic anti-fascist group who resisted the Third Reich and whose most famous member was Sophie Scholl, executed by guillotine for handing out anti-Nazi leaflets. Just like the White Rose in Germany, “we encourage people to resist the Covid tyranny. We do not want any more [sic] lockdowns and demand an end to all restrictions” protests the modern resistance’s Sophie Scholls.

The shameless appropriation of some of the most appalling atrocities of the Nazi regime such as the medical experiments that led to the formulation of the Nuremberg Code is another weapon in the armoury of these “anti-fascist” fascists. According to their warped psychology, the equivalence of vaccine manufacturers and public health officials to ogres such as Dr Mengele legitimises the behavior of one anti-vax protestor who in Paul Mason’s account bellowed through a megaphone at a BBC crew in August 2021 that “The Nuremberg trials are going ahead on 1st September… The noose is ready … you will hang for what you have done to this country.”[17] The gallows imagery from the Capitol insurrection scenes on 6th January 202i are a sober reminder of what, in the ideal circumstances, such apparently fringe societal derangement can potentially lead to.

Similar phenomena have been noted in anti-vax movements in other parts of the Anglophone world. In his analysis of the ‘grooming’ of anti-vaxxers by the far-right, Josh Roose notes that at the violent anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne, Australia in September 2021, some protestors attacked trade union offices as unions are deemed to be “sell-outs” and in league with big government.[18]. He notes the observation by the Victoria Police Commissioner that the majority of protestors at the Melbourne protest were men aged 25-40, who “came with violent intent”. He also cites a warning by Victoria police to a parliamentary inquiry into extremism that:

Online commentary on Covid-19 has provided a recruiting tool for right-wing extremist groups, linking those interested in alternative wellness, anti-vaccination and anti-authority conspiracy theories with white supremacist ideologies[19]

This warning amplifies the research conducted by Roose on the encrypted messaging groups and online spaces used by anti-vaxxers where he has seen “the same names popping up, and growing use of hard right or far right nationalist socialist iconography." He finds that the far-right “groomers” have found an audience: young men shut out of social participation by lockdowns and other Covid restrictions, who are angry, frustrated and looking for someone to blame. This demographic is especially receptive to the messages put out by far right, grooming recruiters: that there is a cabal of politicians and elites who are oppressing you; that freedom is at risk; that one must stand up for liberty, that there is a wealthy and unelected ruling class controlling you. [20]

Terrorist Potential of the Anti-Vaccine Movement.

UK counter-terrorism agencies and police are increasingly concerned by the trajectory of the UK’s anti-vaxxer movement particularly its evolution towards violent extremism as I have described and the formation of US-style militias. Intelligence assessments have described the anti-vax movement as “ostensibly a conveyor belt, delivering fresh recruits to extremist groups, including racially and ethnically motivated violent extremist organisations.”[21]

The movement’s more extreme elements are recruiting and strategizing over the encrypted social media messaging app Telegram, with one UK anti-vaxxer channel asking for “men of integrity” to “fight for our children’s future.” The moves offline by anti-vax conspiracists is of particular concern to security authorities, with the UK-based Alpha Men Assemble (AMA) group organizing military-style training in preparation for what it has termed a “war” on the government and its Covid policies. Posts from the AMA’s official Telegram channel, which has 7,000 subscribers, to adopt anti-surveillance techniques by using “burner phones” and advise people to “communicate offline” with CB and ham radios. Other posts promise supporters that “you will be taught self-defence at each AMA meeting with “professional men” and told to “acquire [sic] a black style uniform.”[22]

Another group, Veterans 4 Freedom, and which is understood to have around two hundred members, has hosted Telegram conversations referring to a violent insurrection in which vaccination centres are targeted.[23]

Among the UK government organisations now mobilized to monitor the anti-vax movement are the Hone Office’s Office for Security and Counterterrorism (OSCT) and its research, information, and communications unit (RICU) which covers public safety issues, including counterterrorism.[24]

Also assigned to the documentation of the anti-vax threat is the Home Office’s counter-extremism analysis and insight (CEAI) programme, whose work informs strategic and operational decisions, as does its extremism analysis unit (EAU) and the counter-disinformation unit, part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport.[25]

Data from Prevent, the UK government’s counter-extremism, reveals that one of the fastest-growing extremism challenges in the UK are “mixed, unclear and unstable” (MUU) threats, ideological drivers of extremist violence beyond the traditional categories of far-right and Islamist extremism.[26] The convergence of anti-vaxxers into other fringe movements with the “Great Reset” and “New World Order” serving as the unifying conspiracy narratives which are shared by anti-lockdown figures like Piers Corbyn; men’s rights, Brexiteers and identifiable far right groups like Britain First.

With the gradual return to “normality” after the peak of the coronavirus pandemic and all the associated restriction regimes such as lockdowns and the lessening public health impacts of the latest Covid-19 strains (no room for complacency it must be stressed though) it is tempting to speculate if the threats of anti-vaxxer extremism and its hybridized ideologies have passed. I would argue that, in a sense, the genie is out of the bottle. Anti-vaccine sentiment and activism is uniting the ideologically disparate from the Nature First of alternative health practitioners to the America First of far-right politicians such as the US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor-Greene. They appeal to a pervasive distrust of politicians (“they are all the same”); the mainstream media (“they all represent corporate interests); experts and public officials like Anthony Fauci (“they have all been bought”). To cynical, socially atomized, and bitterly resentful social groups like young men; the all-encompassing and unprovable conspiracy narratives like The Great Reset and The New World Order (which have displaced QAnon in their hierarchy of evil) are utterly seductive. That is the direction of travel in which the anti-vaccine movement is set a new generation of far-right believers and activists have boarded the vehicle for the long haul.

  1. In the more remote parts of Australia there is evidence that vaccine rates are low due to far right elements online targeting Indigenous people with a campaign claiming the vaccine causes all sorts of maladies, with the specific aim of getting them killed.

A lot of the problem with COVID-19 comes as it is clearly now established as escaping the Wuhan Lab, thus feeding conspiracy theories en masse.

....and is it proper to call it a vaccine if you can still catch it? I'm triple vaxxed and caught it recently. Maybe the terminology needs to change around the injections. The reaction from my first shot was way worse than having the 'rona.

  2. A well argued piece Barry. A number are full on whack jobs but some have intelligently questioned the narrative - people like Paddy Mooney on this blog for example. Even if Paddy is wrong he is no conspiracy theorist.
I fear what may grow out from the case you present - the suppression of alternative ideas, the spread of safe space, no platforming and cancel culture. While Steven Pinker is not everyone's cuppa, I think he is very perceptive and he is constantly warinng about the danger of wokeism and how it is driving society to a culture of religiosity with its banning of alternative ideas.

    1. Anthony, it is certainly legitimate to critique the responses of governments to the pandemic in the way that Paddy Mooney has done. Having just read a book by Scottish Public Health officer (his name escapes me sorry) on "Lockdown. The Year that the World Went Mad"; I am coming around to the view that lockdowns should have ended or at least relaxed after six weeks; schools should have reopened after a month's closures and that campuses should not have been subjected to the severe restrictions that they were. Young people are entitled to feel that their existence was crushed. Certainly many governments (e.g. Hungary) used the pandemic as excuses for power grabs. But vaccination lies and narratives around "The Great Reset" and deliberate release of the Covid agent have to be opposed with hard scientific evidence.

    2. Barry that is spot on. I have similar misgivings. Paddy is robust enough to fight his won corner but I don't want to see people like him who are willing to swim against the tide with logical arguments marginalised as some sort of nutter. You don't do that so it is an observation on my part and not a criticism of a fine piece.

The banking and oil cartels are joined at the hip and are one and the same. Their agenda is Zionist amongst other things. Today they have total control of this rock.....If you want to understand how joined at the hip they are then make time to watch 3 documentaries and maybe read the transcripts and check out the hyperlinks for you to fact check....and check the sauce material and test them against your source material...And after you will concede about the banking/oil cartels Zionist agenda.. So you think bat flu origins lie in a P4 lab in Wuhan. Was it leaked on purpose or by accident? Do you have any source links to back up your claim?

What I know is the first videos that emerged from Wuhan at the end of 2019 people were dropping like flies....That didn't happen anywhere else on this rock.

Bat flu ...We are told that it didn't exist before late 2019 no one had ever heard of it, Big Pharma didn't have a vaccine for it....Yet the WHO have been tracking adverse drug reactions to the Covid19 vaccine from at least 2015.....I have linked all this before Stevie....

    1. Frankie,

By accident. Look at the wikileak cables from several years before 2019 warning of poor procedures in place at that lab.

From my own perspective if it was a spill over event from a natural mutation they would have found the host animal by now and screamed it from the rooftops. Fact is they didn't, and did everything one would expect to cover up as best they could what has really happened. Doctors going missing, wiping computers, denying international access. Not sure what drug reactions you speak of Frankie but they've been developing vaccines continuously for years especially SARS ones. They knew this was coming doesn't mean they did it on purpose. They WERE buggering around with it's genetic code to make it more contagious despite Fauci's lying, and now most of the planet has been exposed in a moment of mass herd immunity. I said at the start it would take out about 15 million before we controlled it, I still stand by that number.

Yes...I am convinced they use the natural resources and minerals this rock has to offer for their own ends.......In much the same way humans exploit the natural resources of this rock....Yes...

Did you open the links and watch the documentaries, read transcripts and test the sources James Corbett provides against your source material? Corbett goes to the original source. I don't think you have. The documentaries are close to five hours in total, means thats a lot of reading, watching and cross reference...The only conclusion you or anyone can come to after watching the documentaries is Corbett sources check out....And big oil/banking cartels are one and the same and since the start of the 20th century they have been conspiring to control world politics and every aspect of your life. From your Bookers Dozen

Dust the book off and cross reference it again with another Corbett documentary called Data is the new oil and if you want to test what Shoshrana Zuboff says against a different source and not Corbett then open this link and watch a documentary from 2013 called...The real value of your personal data....They all say the same thing. And it is the very same thing most IT heads said when the internet first came online....Protect your personal data and don't give too much away.

    1. Frankie, here is a definitive rebuttal from Reuter's Fact Checkers about the lie that you have just spread (not for the first time) about George Soros being a Nazi collaborator:

Reuters debunked a false claim that a photograph shows a young Soros in a Nazi uniform (here). During the time Nazis were active, Soros would not have met the age requirements to be in the Schutzstaffel. Soros and his family were Hungarian Jews who lived in Budapest during the war, disguising their identities for safety. In 1947 at the age of 17, Soros moved to London to attend university (more here).

By the time Soros was 17, the fall of Nazi Germany had already happened. Soros could not possibly have been involved in the Nazi party which was active between 1920-1945. He is also a Hungarian Jew, further disproving this theory. In a 1998 60 Minutes interview (youtu.be/AiqHiQYuoOs) Soros says his father forged his family’s identity to protect them. Soros, as a teenager, was placed under custody of a government official with the premise of being his godson. During this time, Soros witnessed (but did not actively participate in) the confiscation of Jewish property (here). In the interview, Soros says he doesn’t feel guilt looking back at these events, mentioning that he was a child at the time and that he was a “spectator” to something that would have happened regardless of his presence.

You mentioned Bad Billy Boy Gates....Bad Billy Boy Gates is no more a climatologist, meteorologist, epidemiologist or virologist than you, me or a boy named Sue are...But you and millions of others on this rock either take on board what he says or swear by his words. Bad Billy boy like his father are both eugenists and want to depopulate this rock for their own ends. I have no idea what you do or don't know about Bill Gate but a good starting point is watching who is Bill Gates...make time to read up on the money and who was behing the planned parenthood agenda...

Personally since 2006 anything that has Gates finger prints on it...I stay away from. Since 2006 I have used Kali Linux (it was once called backtrack)...When Stevie was blocked by firewalls living in China, I suggested to him to migrate to Kali or any other linux distro....I also mentioned that the best way to hide a digital foot print is surfing the net with Tails. Bellingcat in April this year (2022) added to their website this work around called.... Bellingcat is Banned in Russia. Here’s How to Beat the Block and they had this to say....

Finally, it’s worth mentioning a couple more methods. One is to use an entire privacy-focused operating system such as TAILS or Qubes However, this requires downloading and installing a Linux-based operating system, which is potentially inconvenient and difficult for less technically-skilled users..

    You are right in saying.....

Frankie, Those docs do not explain or evidence any Zionist agendas whatsoever.

Corbett doesn't mention Zionism in them. I put in Zionism. A fact of life is one of the biggest, if not the biggest oil/banking cartels is the Rothschild family and why you have a problem in accepting what the 4th Lord Rothschild has to say to the chief Rabbi of the UK about the Balfour declaration and the formation of the state of Israel in 1917 is beyond me.
