Pádraic Mac Coitir đź‘Ł musing or grumping on television when up the country for a hurling match in October.

Anyone who knows me will agree I'm a grump at the best of times. I'm hard to please regarding sport, books, TV series and films. Politics is a different matter because it's good to be a grump and cynical and all that goes with it. Liberals, nationalists, racists, homophobes, fundamentalist Christians, Zionists and unionists can fuck off ...

Anyway I went to a hurling match 'up the country' with mo dheathar inné and like the many trips we make to matches the time flies in coz we just talk. He's younger than me and if I get up his nose he just shrugs it off ...

Like myself he does a lotta reading and we have a similar taste so we pass on books to each other. Also like myself we watch a bit of TV but because there's so much crap on - soaps, 'talent contests' and other cringeworthy things - we tend to watch the news, documentaries and sports.

Occasionally the odd gem comes up such as Scandinavian detective series and one I watched recently when I was stuck in the house (one of those things that affects oul people!) came on Netflix. It's called The Chestnut Man and I have to say I really enjoyed it.

My brother suggested a quirky series starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin but I was a bit sceptical about it. How wrong was I? It's definitely quirky but parts have made me laugh out loud- no, I'm not on the wacky backy or full of poitĂn. Maybe it'll appeal for people my age but I would highly recommend The Kominsky Method. Not gonna give anything away ... Enjoy!

  1. I watched The Chestnut Man - it is good but having read the book first there was a spoiler effect. The book is high quality Scandinavian crime fiction.
