Brendan Curran ✒ with a poem from his expansive body of work.

Dark and deep our comrades sleep, with bravery, they faced it all
Both day and night they took on the fight and rallied to the call
The best of our band took their stand, met their force and gave no quarter
But In their beds, and in cold hay sheds, our comrades they did slaughter

♞♜♝

In the fields and bogs we were hunted like dogs our cause to put asunder
But a nation on fire with a freedom desire, no one would put us under
The fight so old, but solid gold, the prize freedom, a united nation
But the price was high, so many would die, imprisonment, and church damnation

♞♜♝

Home-made guns and make shift bombs at times were all we could muster
But we fought the fight with all our might, and faced their violence and their bluster
In farm yard barns we hid our arms, and in homes brave people gave us shelter
They gave their beds, stored our guns in their sheds, their support could not be broken

♞♜♝

With barrel and ball we fought them all until their last man standing
They stood strong and true and died for you, and the nations birth right they did not abandon
And like in times of old our deadly foe feared us both in life and in our dying
The enemy only approached our dead, when they saw the raven landing

  1. "Armoured cars and tanks and guns
Came to take away our sons
But every man will stand behind
    The Men Behind the Wire

Through the little streets of Belfast
In the dark of early morn
    British soldiers came marauding
    Wrecking little homes with scorn.

    Heedless of the crying children
    Dragging fathers from their beds
    Beating sons while helpless mothers
Watched the blood flow from their heads

Armoured cars and tanks and guns
Came to take away our sons
But every man will stand behind
    The Men Behind the Wire

Not for them a judge or jury
Or indeed a crime at all
    Being Irish means they're guilty
So we're guilty one and all

Round the world the truth will echo
    CromweIl's men are here again
    England's name again is sullied
In the eyes of honest men

Armoured cars and tanks and guns
Came to take away our sons
But every man will stand behind
    The Men Behind the Wire

    Proudly march behind our banners
    Firmly stand behind our men
We will have them free to help us
    Build a Nation once again

    On the people stand together
    Proudly firmly on your way
    Never fear, and never falter
Till the boys are home to stay

Armoured cars and tanks and guns
Came to take away our sons
But every man will stand behind
    The Men Behind the Wire"

  2. Worth recalling that PIRA leadership had advance knowledge of the decision to introduce internment making it utterly ineffective as well as being savagely brutal and a source of massive bloodletting.
