Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, former President of Sinn Féin, Chief-of-Staff of the Irish Republican Army and TD representing Longford/Westmeath, died in June 2013. He was one of the most influential figures in Irish Republicanism for more than half a century. To honour this Irish Revolutionary, Cló Saoirse /Irish Freedom Press publish Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, Selected Writings & Speeches, Vol. 1, 1970-1986.

Sinn Féin Poblachtach President Des Dalton called Ruairí Ó Brádaigh “a towering figure of Irish Republicanism”, Henry McDonald writing in the Guardian characterised him as “an icon for a new generation of hard-line republicans”, for his biographer Robert W. White, Ruairí Ó Brádaigh was simply “the last Republican”, and IRA-Volunteer Dolours Price just called him “’Ruairí’ as he calls me ‘Dolours’.” At the same time, he is one of the most controversial figures of 20th Century Ireland.

While holding leading positions in the Irish Republican Army for more than 60 years since the 1950s, Ruairí Ó Brádaigh was not just a soldier, a Volunteer of the Irish Republic. Ruairí Ó Brádaigh was a thinker, a speaker, a writer, and a politician.

To honour Ruairí Ó Brádaigh’s theoretical contribution to Irish Republicanism and to honour Ruairí Ó Brádaigh as a revolutionary politician, Cló Saoirse/Irish Freedom Press will publish Ruairí Ó Brádaigh: Selected Writings & Speeches, Vol. 1, 1970-1986 (ISBN 0-9545791-3-5). The book is edited by historian Dieter Reinisch, Researcher at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and author of Cumann na mBan: 100 Years Defending the Republic (2014). It includes an Introduction by Prof. Robert W. White of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. He is the author of Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, The Life and Politics of an Irish Revolutionary (2006) and Provisional Irish Republicans: An Oral and Interpretive History (1993).

The writings included in this volume span the period when Ruairí Ó Brádaigh was member of the so-called Provisional Irish Republican Movement and President of Sinn Féin (until 1983). This was a crucial period in the life of Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, the Republican Movement and Irish history. The period is encircled by two important splits in the Republican Movement, the formation of the Provisional Army Council (1970) and the formation of the Continuity Army Council (1986). Consequently, the Volume starts with the programmatic What is Irish Republicanism? (1970) and ends with Ruairí Ó Brádaigh’s speech at the Sinn Féin Ard-Fheis in 1986 before leading a historic walk-out.

In the 16 years between these historic events, Ireland witnessed the heights of the War in the occupied 6 Counties, the formulation of Éire Nua, the Hunger Strikes of 1980/81 and the introduction of the Armalite and ballot box strategy. All these events are mirrored in this volume.

Ruairí Ó Brádaigh: Selected Writings & Speeches, Vol. 1, 1970-1986 is published by Cló Saoirse/Irish Freedom Press. Successive volumes will be launched each year in the autumn. Thus, Ruairí Ó Brádaigh: Selected Writings & Speeches, Vol. 2, 1987-2013 will be launched at the Sinn Féin Ard-Fhéis in November 2015.

The first Volume includes 196 pages. It is sold for € 18,- (paperback). A special limited edition will be available as hardback for € 25,-. Bookshops may ask Cló Saoirse/Irish Freedom Press for cost price for the paperback. Special rates are available for public libraries and universities.

  2. Will definitely be buying a nice hard-back copy of this. Rock solid republican history is more rare than hens teeth of late. This will be, I anticipate already, an enjoyable and educational read.

Fair play Dieter, and I will look forward to the chat Sean, after reading the book of course!

  3. Was it Ruairí Ó Brádaigh who said that every generation of Republicans ends up trying to cash in its chips?

If it wasn't him, does anyone know who did say it?

I remember hearing it around the time of the GFA.

  4. a sign of the threat this man and his beliefs were to this septic free state and the crooks who run it was the behaviour of the dregs of the garda siochcroneys at his burial. what a pathetic display of cowardice and bullying all in one. theres a lot being said now about charlie hebdo and all the trouble in france. proper order. but what about the manchester journalist who was investigating the murder of a french woman in cork nearly 20 years ago now but ended up being framed by the most evil little shower of cretins i have ever come across. what is coming out in the court case is stomach churning, embarrasing and very frightening. he came to ireland because he felt like a misfit in england and fell in love with this place. what happened to him is not just a national disgrace but an international disgrace. anyway, im going off topic, but the pigs down in cork are a shower of bone idle, dysfunctional cowardly criminal cretins and should be disbanded. if this happened an irish journalist in england, the world and his mother would know about it.come to mention it, there has hardly been any support for bailey from the irish journalists who are now crying over hebdo. i hope bailey writes a book about his time in ireland. it will not be pleasant reading. this statelet is going to collapse under the weight of its own gombeen corruption. well actually, it has already.
looking forward to getting ruairis book. its so irish though isnt it. the soundest and most genuine republican was shafted by the guys who thought eire nua was 'a sop to unionism'. thats the boys in stormont now. and the marxist warlord who ended up handing over the weapons! what a bullshitter. articles 2 3 gone. mi5 anyone.

  6. don't drink any more.... wife doesn't allow it.

Grouch, that's a fair point about journalists and Bailey. They all come out of the woodwork when it is safe and profitable or suits their agendas. 'Brit' like the present SF membership.

  10. ozzy, i was nearly beaten to death in an unprovoked assault outside my home two years ago at seven o clock on a sunday evening as i was going to pick up a fare by a gang of off their head travellers. first time in my life i went to the peelers. they've been up to my house twice in that time over unpaid speeding fines. they never got back and i dont believe they even investigated what happened. on my solicitors advice i wrote to chief super for meeting, kept ringing and writing til eventually i was granted a meeting with one of her underlings who informed me he was in a hurry and hadnt even lukd at the file. in a normal country my lovely unsettled traveller neighbours would be up for attempted murder. in my case they got back to me over unpaid speeding fines. im ok now as i realise the whole shitstem is corrupt and collapsing around us. larry, bailey will write a book i guarantee you and it will be an international best seller-film etc and will make this country luk exactly what it is. btw, phonix magazine nailed the charlie hebdo story today.

Sorry to hear about your knacker problem. I have been stopped in the town centre here and on the street close to my home several times in the past and asked how much I paid for my wife (Philippine native - Irish citizen)and was she 'by the day' or what? Third time I got the reg of that particular car and went to the Guards, (all three cases were travellers/knackers)something must have happened coz it never happened again. In fairness the Guards phoned me to say they were following it up and needed such incidents reported so as to quantify racism and such crimes in the area.

As for Bailey, I cannot begin to imagine what mental torment that poor man has undergone. That MUST have had the poor soul close to an 8ft rope investment. False accusations are the worst thing I think anyone can face. The fact human nature is ugly enough to thrive on them makes it all the worse for the recipient. Salt into the wounds.

If he writes a book I will definitely be buying it.

  12. larry, what must ur average decent frog think who is following this case. it is literally incredible. as i sed if this happened an irish journalist in france, england anywhere, colin farrell wud already hav done the film. ps, i think ur traveller friends might have been told you had friends! and to be fair, im sure there are guards disgusted at shenanigans down there in cork, donegal, offaly.....

Personally after the RUC life experience I am of a positive dispensation regarding the Guards. I loved the movie the Guard and had a great laugh at it more than once. Though I expect if some bog Irish thug started beating about a Garda station that positivity would soon evaporate. As it is I'm glad to say, any dealings with them to date have been very positive. Long may it remain so. I see a female Guard arrested in Sligo in a drugs related operation. Hate to see that. Lets the RUC look good....almost. But then they were engaged in 3 decades of fabricating evidence, destroying families for fun and sectarian murder and manipulation of agents. So, the odd Guard falling off the straight and narrow is nothing to panic about I would suggest.

As for Bailey, a book and a zillion from a movie deal are the least he deserves. You are totally correct of course, the Irish cute hoors are well versed in playing the victim and crying foul. Recon we'd be into the 3rd sequel of the movie by now.
