A Christian nationalist organization that is vetting potential Supreme Court nominees for their adherence to the group’s biblical worldview standard says that previous Supreme Court rulings have invited God’s punishment on the U.S., and that President Donald Trump must name the “right” people to fill any vacancies “to escape national judgment.”

AFA Action, the political arm of the American Family Association, distributed an email last Thursday and again on Tuesday warning of “fearful consequences” if Trump doesn’t use any future Supreme Court nominations to restore a national relationship with God that AFA says was broken by SCOTUS rulings upholding church-state separation.

“America desperately needs our Supreme Court Justices to turn back to God,” declares the fundraising email, which comes at a time of widespread speculation about the likelihood of one or more justices resigning this year. Highlighting the uncertainty of justices’ intentions is the fact that on the same day AFA’s email said a vacancy was likely soon, the allied Family Research Council published an article saying it is unlikely that Justice Samuel Alito or Clarence Thomas would be retiring soon.

AFA Action’s Center for Judicial Renewal is run by a long-time right-wing judicial activist Phillip Jauregui . . .

AFA ðŸŠķ Trump Justices Must Turn SCOTUS 'Back to God' To Avoid Fearful Judgment

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled ten years ago today that the Constitution protects the right of same-sex couples to get married. A supermajority of Americans—more than two-thirds—supports marriage equality, but anti-LGBTQ religious-right groups and their allies are determined to dismantle it.

The Court’s pro-equality ruling in Obergefell v Hodges effectively overturned state marriage bans that had been enacted across the country. The same forces that pushed those bans are using the anniversary of the marriage equality ruling to boost their legal and political attacks on legal equality for same-sex couples.

Overturning Roe v Wade took anti-abortion activists 50 years, but religious-right groups are hoping to dispatch legal marriage equality much more quickly thanks to shifts on the Supreme Court over the past ten years, with three Trump justices fortifying the far-right flank. Republican state legislators are giving them a hand by trying to pass anti-equality laws that would be challenged in court, giving the Court a chance to reverse Obergefell.

The fact is that anti-equality leaders have never accepted the legitimacy of the Obergefell ruling. They were making plans to overturn it even before the decision was announced.

There’s way too much celebrating going on around the unanimous Supreme Court decision yesterday that The New York Times characterized with the headline, “Supreme Court Maintains Broad Access to Abortion Pill” and The Washington Post headlined, “Supreme Court upholds broad access to key abortion pill mifepristone.”

In fact, the Supreme Court took no such stand with regard to mifepristone, abortion, Plan B, or even contraception. They merely said that the doctors who brought the case had not yet suffered any actual harm themselves, and therefore had no basis to sue in the first place.

Turning the case down was also a quick-and-easy way for the Republican justices on the Court to get out from under the spotlight glaring on personal corruption, bribe-taking, and their other anti-woman decisions, causing people to think that maybe they can be reasonable, Sam Alito arguing otherwise notwithstanding.

As Justice Kavanaugh wrote in the unanimous opinion:

Article III of the Constitution confines the jurisdiction of federal courts to ‘Cases’ and ‘Controversies.’ … As Justice Scalia memorably said, Article III requires a plaintiff to first answer a basic question: ‘What’s it to you?’
