Another murder of a women and her daughter
I am very privileged to sit on the board of ABCLN’s Women’s Aid in Northern Ireland. During a recent discussion about the inexorable succession of murders of women and girls in the region, our CEO Gillian Robinson made the point that the next women to be killed was walking around.
She didn’t know that she was next, but perhaps she has a suspicion, a fear. Well, that next women has now been murdered - along with her 8 year old daughter in a ‘murder - suicide’ pattern which has become so familiar to anyone paying attention.
Since 2020, around 30 women have been violently killed in Northern Ireland - a region with a population of approximately 1.9 million, giving Northern Ireland one of the highest rates of female homicide in Western Europe. Many of these deaths have occurred in domestic settings, with the perpetrator commonly a current or former intimate partner or another man known to the victim.
The pattern of these killings reflects wider evidence on gender-based violence. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) statistics show that domestic abuse remains a significant feature of homicide cases, with female victims disproportionately represented among domestic abuse-related killings.
