Caoimhin O’Muraile ☭ In 1933 the murderous butcher Adolph Hitler and his Nazi party became the Government of Germany on the promise of making “Germany great again”.

This was in reference to the humiliating Treaty of Versailles imposed on Germany after the country’s defeat in the First World War. Hitler's promise to “make Germany great again” hit the note with the electorate, and in 1933 he was made Chancellor of Germany by President Hindenburg. Later in 1934 this madman would declare himself Fuhrer (leader) of Germany, abolishing elections and banning all political parties except the Nazi Party. We all know, or certainly should know, what the next twelve years had in store for the German people especially Communists, Socialists, trade unionists and Jewish people, the treatment of such groups - especially the Jews - ending in mass murder.

In 2016 Donald Trump was elected (of sorts under Electoral College rules) as President of the United States of America on the slogan “Make America Great Again”. Ring any bells? Hitler waged war on the world beginning with Poland in September 1939, switching to Western Europe, then the Soviet Union where he finally came unstuck.

Trump, after his re-election in 2024, is making aggressive noises towards his closest neighbours and middle ranking countries, Mexico and Canada. He claims the independent sovereign nation state of Canada is really the “fifty-first state of the United States” which is highly offensive and provocative. He is threatening to impose tariffs on both these countries' goods coming into the US, delaying for one month the tariffs on Mexican goods because the Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, agreed to send 10,000 border guards to prevent the illegal transportation of drugs, particularly Fentanyl, into the US. These border guards on the Mexican side of the border will also do much of Trump's dirty work in stemming so-called illegal immigration. Trump is also intent on placing trade tariffs on Chinese goods coming into the US which is guaranteed to force retaliation from the eastern giant. Bullying Mexico and Canada is one thing, aggression against the Chinese is potentially another matter altogether.

Donald Trump has stated “the golden age of America starts right here” immediately after his election, taking office in January 2025. Trump is in the process of starting a trade war as he is also to impose tariffs on the European Union and has not completely ruled out the same against Britain who, for some obscure reason, believe they have a ‘special relationship’ with the USA. Britain since leaving the EU are in a precarious position regarding trade. Do they lick the arse of Trump or the EU? If Britain increase trade with the EU it is bound to infuriate Donald Trump, yet can they afford not to? Where will such tariffs leave the twenty-six-counties who are part of the EU. Like delusional Britain the twenty-six-county administration believe they too have a special relationship with the USA. There are many supposed‘ undocumented Irish’ or Irish illegal immigrants living in the US so will Trump treat these people any different from the inhumane way he treats Mexican so-called ‘illegal Migrants’? Trump, like Hitler in many ways before him with European Jewry, has never hidden his contempt for Mexican migrants, legal or otherwise, and people of different ‘races’ in general.

It will be interesting to see what reception the Irish delegation receive on 17th March, if they receive an invite, when the government attends the Saint Patricks Day celebrations. Trump has little time for this annual event unlike his predecessor Joe (pretend to be Irish) Biden. Will Trump even attend the event, will he issue Ireland with an invitation at all? After all, did he not say of Ireland; you “have a bullseye on your back”! Why are the Irish, if invited, willing to send anybody at all this year, and this includes the opposition parties in Dail Eireann, particularly Sinn Fein, when the host is a man who is threatening to expel millions of Palestinians from Gaza?

On The Week in Politics thousands of Irish jobs dependent on ‘Foreign Direct Investment’ particularly US companies were used as the excuse for going to the US and grovel to Trump. Does anybody short of a witless imbecile really believe this rubbish cited by Micheal Martin and others that US companies who amass huge profits here in Ireland would threaten Irish jobs by pulling out just because an Taoiseach does not attend a 17th March commemoration? Of course they wouldn’t, they make too much money out of a highly educated skilled yet relatively low paid workforce, a rare commodity in itself. Low corporation tax also adds to the benefits, as Martin constantly reminds us, adding to their profits. He also cited the Irish ‘undocumented’ or illegal immigrants in the US as a reason for attending. He wishes to defend their interests and try to get recognition for them. Well, Micheal, if visits by you and your predecessors could not gain this with Presidents who were sympathetic to the cause of the ‘undocumented’ why would this unsympathetic President give you anything? Let’s cut the bull, you and your entourage are going to suck up to Trump, no other reason. If you were principled and serious about support for the Palestinians, and this applies to Sinn Fein also, you would not go to Washington this year.

Trump is a staunch ally of Israel and the Prime Minister of that country, Benjamin Netanyahu. So why are the twenty-six-county government who claim to recognise the state of Palestine attending at all? Trump does not, and has no intentions of - any more than Netanyahu recognising Palestine in any shape or form. Neither does he support a ‘two state solution’ in that troubled part of the world. Trump and Netanyahu are after a ‘Greater Israel’, and expansion of Israeli influence in the entire region are these men’s goals, not an independent Palestinian state. Trump has also indicated ‘Ireland are legally obligated’ to take in Palestinian refugees if he takes over Gaza! He claims this obligation is under international law but since when has he given a fuck about international law?

During his first spell as President, 2016-20, Donald Trump abolished in US law the need for the media moguls such as Rupert Murdoch to report the news ‘fairly’. Now they can print and tell what the fuck they please, as they always in many ways have done but now legally, and truth does not come into it. It is largely down to this legally bent media which swept Trump to power for this second term. He is already signing Presidential decrees by the score on a daily basis. Will this nutter abolish elections and any form, albeit sham, democracy in the US as did Hitler in Germany? So far there are no signs of him doing so but do not bet your house against such a move! There can be no doubt that Trump mark two is more aggressive than Trump mark one. Trade wars can and often do lead to actual wars as the capitalist brigands fall out. To quote VI Lenin; “what happens when the thieves fall out”? Well we might just see and it could possibly be the final disagreement among the capitalist thieves!

As well as having dangerous eyes on Canada - the Head of State incidentally being Britain’s King Charles III - the US President has also eyed up Greenland, a semi-autonomous region under Danish control. Trump claims Greenland is important to ‘US security’ which roughly translated means it is rich in natural resources which Trump wants. He has not ruled out using military force to achieve this end. The situation is compounded further by the fact that Denmark is a NATO member. The question here is, will article five of NATOs mutual defence policy apply if the US invade Greenland? Would such a move by the US President tear NATO apart? Would the US military obey such an order from their ‘Commander in Chief’? There are many if’s but’s and maybe’s with this President whose sanity, like Hitlers, must be brought into question!

Prior to his election he told the world he would stop the war in Ukraine in “one day” if he was elected. He appears to have changed his mind on this because he indicated that the US weapon supply to Ukraine would stop. Trump is still supplying arms to Ukraine despite his election pledge, but there is nothing new in breaking election pledges, liberal democracy is built on falsehoods, but to what end? This is certain to annoy Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who thought he was on ‘nodding terms’ with Trump! The truth is the US President has realised the Ukraine, like Greenland, is rich in natural resources laying beneath its soil. Trump is in all likelihood supplying Ukraine with weapons in return for access to such resources? President Zelenskyy of the Ukraine is, like his waring neighbour Putin, a loose cannon and not always totally honest. In this respect him and Trump make good bedfellows but what happens if Zelenskyy tries to go back on any deal for weapons done with the US after the conflict with Russia is over? Trump appears to have debunked old reliable trading partners for the less dependable hotbed of Eastern Europe. Could this be his intention? The possible implications of his policies are frightening and unpredictable.

On climate change the new President is a ‘climate change denier’ as are most of his administration. Space cowboy and planetary vandal, Elon Musk, who sends rocket after rocket through the five delicate layers of the earth’s atmosphere is a member of this government. Trump has already pulled out of the Paris Accord on climate change, and as the USA are one of the greatest pollutants along with China on the planet, this is a worrying move. The USA are no longer bound by the Paris Accord and they are free to create as much climate damage as they feel necessary for profits. Trump has also installed businessmen into his administration other than Musk. Corporatism in government is one of the component factors of fascism! This means the USA will be run largely by the interests of large US business corporations which is a dangerous shift to the right. Hitler dictated Germany on similar lines with representatives of Krupp Steel, Siemens, and other large German capitalist corporations and members of the Nazi Party and holding Government positions. Everything in the Third Reich was geared to profit: even mass murder made money!

Nobody knows what exactly Trump will do and what he will not. Are much of his promises just hot air and bluff or does he pose a great danger outside the normal instabilities of capitalism? Either way the world is less secure than it has been for some time with this madman at the helm in Washington!

  1. Caoimhin, you are spot on apart from what you say about Ukraine. Don Diaper and his drink sozzled, women harassing Defence Sec have indicated that Ukraine will be sacrificed Munich style in a Nazi - Soviet style pact between Trump and Putin.

  2. When I submitted this piece, Barry,, the Putin Trump talks had not began. It now looks, regarding Ukraine, you may be right as a Czechoslovakian style deal looks on the cards. The Czechs were not involved in the Munich talks and it looks like Ukraine face a similar outcome.
