Padraic Mac Coitir casts his mind back half a century to the death of an IRA volunteer.

It's hard to believe this was 50 years ago. IRA volunteer Tony Henderson lived in the flats in Corrib Avenue and although I never knew him I remember that day very well.

I was only 13 and felt so proud when I was asked to bring a wreath to the flat where Tony was being waked. A few days later his funeral took place with his comrades forming a guard of honour.

I was too young to fully understand what was going on but I couldn't wait to get involved in something. It's not like we live in a democracy where one could write more details but the least we can do is pay tribute to IRA volunteers and many others who took part in a struggle which should have been successful.

There may not be the numbers today but others still struggle for the same ideals as IRA volunteer Tony Henderson died for.

  1. I remember this - it is one of my early memories of IRA volunteers being killed. He would not even have been 70, yet dead 50 years.
