Ian Major shares his experience of falling prey to Covid-19.

Hi, dear friends. A report on what's been going on since I last posted before Christmas:

Christmas Day my daughter lost her sense of smell. Boxing Day all the rest of us, bar my grandsons, manifested some symptoms of Covid infection. All small – a slight cough, and/or a bit of fatigue, or runny nose, loss of smell, bad taste.

That's the way it stayed for all – except for me and my married daughter. From Boxing Day till I was admitted to hospital on Wednesday 6th January I had an unrelenting headache and unrelenting nausea. And super-sensitivity of my face and head – even a sheet brushing against my face was jarringly painful. Lying down on the pillow was painful, but exhaustion demanded it.

Hard to emphasize enough the depth of the nausea – I managed maybe a small carton of custard a day. Tea, coffee, milk tasted bad and I could not face them. Later on even water was an effort.

We all tested positive by January 2nd. All doing well except me, but I thought I could stick it out as I was already eight days infected. But by Wednesday 6th morning I realized that if I didn't get to hospital I was going to die, struggling to get enough oxygen from my breathing. No ambulances available, so my daughter and Susan brought me to Craigavon Area Hospital A&E.

I did not notice, as I had not been looking in a mirror for a while, but Susan tells me my face was taking on a purple shade, and my lips blue.

The doctors put me on IV fluid immediately and listed me for admission to a Covid ward when one became available. The nausea remained, but the headache went within an hour. Blessed relief!

The consultant came to see me next day, when I was on the Covid ward. He had started me on heavy duty steroids, antibiotics and Remdesivir. Maybe something else too, but I can't remember.

I had been on 1200 Ibuprofen daily for my arthritis, and he said he just hates to hear any Covid patient being on anti-inflammatories. So I stopped them. Now that I'm home, I can review my needs with my GP.

I started treatment on 10ltrs of oxygen. That gradually reduced to 6, 4, 3, 2 and zero by the day before my release. Let me emphasize this for any who think the dangers from Covid-19 are exaggerated. The mortality figures are in the context of having everyone who needs hospitalization for Covid-19 getting it. But what if so many are so quickly infected that the hospitals are overrun? When you ring for an ambulance or even get driven to the A&E, they can't admit you or treat you?

I am certain that had I not got oxygen and IV fluids on that Wednesday morning, I would have lay on my couch as my oxygen levels steadily dropped – until my heart stopped with the struggle. That applies to everyone who had to be admitted to hospital for their Covid infection. No oxygen treatment available – they die.

My last two chest x-rays showed some Covid pneumonia remaining, but no increase. So the Dr was happy to release me last night, and I was delighted to be going home to my wife and daughter.

He told me it will take a few months to recover. And that it is important neither to overdo it, or do too little. The danger of Covid clots remains, so gentle exercise that keeps up blood circulation, and steadily improve lung function. Had my first stroll just now, about 50 metres. Lovely to breath the fresh air and feel the circulation working!

My married daughter was admitted to same hospital a couple of weeks ago, with suspected Covid clot in her leg. Scanning showed no clot, but small clusters of small clots in her lungs. Despite testing negative for Covid, they treated her with the same drugs as me. And she was released home last Monday – still testing negative. They suspect a Covid-caused inflamation in her leg, that was so light that it left only the effects, with no Covid remaining.

I had many thoughts as I lay or sat on my Covid bed over these two weeks. Maybe I will share some of them later. All I wish to say now is my deepest appreciation to All the staff – the nurses and doctors, catering and cleaning staff, physio’s, etc. They are working short-staffed and are over-worked, all day in fitted PPE that is warm even on the colder days and hot the rest of the time. Fatigue would normally tend to short tempers and disputes, but not one did I see in my fortnight among them. Working diligence 100%. And the care on top of that. Remarkable.

I give thanks to our heavenly Father for His provision through them, and pray for them that they and their families will be protected from infection. Quite a number have caught it and are recovered, but the dangers to their families means extra levels of precautions when they go home from shift.

Thank you to all who sent their good wishes and prayers by Messenger and to Susan directly.

I really hope you come out the other end of your traumatic journey.

Your story and so many like yours is the perfect response to those who deny or minimise the extent of this viral scourge.

  2. Ian - a moving piece and we are grateful that you let us feature it. Prior to you contracting the virus you warned me to be careful and then warned me after you got it and prior to your hospitalisation. It was noticeable how you kept others firmly in mind while experiencing it yourself. Each time you sent a message I read it out to the family - sometimes the personal touch gets through. So "Ian the pastor" would have a familiar ring to it here.

Even for those who are not convinced by the efficacy of wearing masks (the genuine ones and not the conspiracy wing nuts) it is plain to see how helpful the wearing of them is viewed by health service staff. I hate the things but for the staff alone I will persist in wearing them until they feel safe with us not wearing them. Your praise of the health care workers struck a chord here.

To your wife and family, they are very fortunate to have you with them and we wish them all the very best from here. Keep well and stay safe. I are so glad you made it through.

  3. Ian that was most informative thanks for posting it. I learned more from that than from Hancock or Holohan in the last year. Avoid anti inflammatory meds. Good to know.

Isn't it unfortunate that rather than invest in the NHS the Tory Party tell people to save it by staying home to save lives? And the people aplaud that. While they power hose tax payers money to their friends.

Great to know your loved ones are ok. My cousins son dates a girl who's dad is a doctor and she brought this ugly flu variant, or one of them ( more covid variants than IRAs these days) into the house. Again only the dad got a bad dose, everyone else was mild or zero problems.

This is not a genuine pandemic and could have been handled logically and without the state psychological terror campaign.

I'm hopeful my 4 year old doesn't miss another years school. But the next election is 2024 so I expect Mr fix it Boris to change tac in 2023 saying he got it done, together we beat the virus, Rule Britannia and I expect him to get re elected.

  4. Larry - even the most suspicious (outside of the crazies) of minds know it is a genuine pandemic. Once it reaches the levels that it does it is easily characterised as a pandemic. Already there are suggestions that the South African strain might make the vaccine 50% less effective.

The wiser critics main bone of contention is the lockdown. What adds to their suspicion is the attempt to shut down discussion on the usefulness or otherwise of the measures used to combat the pandemic. There are just too many concerns about the impact.

Any critique of the measures has itself to be serious and measured rather than a rant otherwise the critic is too easy marginalised. There is something to be learned from how Peter Hutchens responds to attempts to gag him.

  5. It is NOT a pandemic. The tests are known to be useless giving massive numbers of false positives. My nephew got a text telling him to self isolate for ten days and there is zero wrong with him. Another friend who's wife is in managerial position in the hospital got 'covid/flu' and said he has had worse hangovers. Same with a former classmate told she was positive and said had worse colds growing up. This was tearable without destroying the economic infrastructure of the entire planet. I hope when Biden tries to start the next war shortly COVID is an acceptable excuse not to enlist. Had no idea you were under the bed with Barry. How disappointing.

But in terms of serious argument, when the people who hold your position seem to be religious loons, nobody is going to afford it much serious attention.

  8. Anthony,
I'd no time for Hitchens before covid, for all his intelligence, I thought his opinion on the war/troubles was one dimensional. I think he has handled himself admirably during the covid debate, I agreed with a lot of his points regarding lockdown. My opinion on it now is debate pro and anti lockdown are pointless. The majority supported the lockdown so we are going to have to deal with the ramifications health and economically.
I sided with the anti lockdown epidemiologists. I felt the points they were making regarding western style restrictions being inadequate, variants causing problems with vaccines, the potential for more deaths through missed appointments, poverty etc resonated. Although I concede that could be that thing where you unconsciously side with an argument that best fits your existing beliefs. Now I stay out of it as it seems both sides are pointing out selective data so they can say, nanananana I was right.

His critics try to Make Hitchens out to be a loon by alleging he is a Covid denier but he has a vastly different position from that. I was listening to him on Podcast at the start of the lockdowns and he was not denying Covid but calling into question the effectiveness of the response. We will run a piece by him shortly. I think we are obligated to listen to people like him who make intelligent arguments. He is not some conspiracy crank who can be laughed out of the debate.

Rangers tribute act has won the league at Christmas. Your logic is? Do you still describe yourself as a researcher? Experts like Fauci do the term an injustice.

Society is divided between the medically weak and vulnerable, the ancient and ready for the grave and the terrified gimps. That collective and theiving politicians (is there any other kind?) are keeping the healthy and functional under house arrest.

  17. Barry my take on HIV/AIDS was initially shock and worry (even fear Barry) induced by lack of knowledge and people saying things like you could get it from a beer glass and things like that. But a little research cleared the issue up. I learned that it was a blood disease and generally gay men indulging in anal sex or people with a drug habit sharing needles were most affected.

Seeing as I was neither of those I felt safe enough to come out from under my bed and go about my normal imperfect life Barry. Once I realised the nature of the disease I didn't feel afraid of gay men or drug users as long as they weren't trying to fuck me in the ass with a ten inch dick or stick needles in me full or drugs.

The same applies to Covid19 Barry. Research the facts. The death toll is highest among the over 80 age group. 90+ percent of people who get the covid/flu virus don't even know they have or have had it they tell us.

I am a simpler individual than that, if I feel sick I will tell a GP. If I am not sick I don't need YOU to insist otherwise and if it also means my 4 year old child gets confined to the house and misses a year or two or even three at school, then, thanks for your concern but you can STICK IT. Look after your 80 yr old granny and leave my son alone.

If you believe not using the NHS to treat ALL sick people is a good policy and telling people to save the NHS by not funding or using it then maybe you really need to step back and think again.

Free the covid19. Let it do its job, bury the geriatric dead and move on. Enough is enough.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Barry the reason I opt for the nuclear option ather that a logical balanced approach of isolating the sick and elderly vulnerable and letting people get on with their lives is because the governments show the nuclear option is the best one..as in locking every one up instead off funding the NHS and letting society function normally. So, get rid of the geriatrics so this can never happen again. Maybe to keep coolies and gimps content and feeling safe we should have a cut off point, 82 yrs old mandatory euthenasia. If it's good enough for vaccines why not I say. GET IT DONE!

  19. Barry and Mackers

Some basic facts on your deadly flu virus.

    https://www.avert.org/coronavirus/covid-19-myths-and-factsy

I am glad you alluded to HIV/AIDS Barry. Reading between the lines here in this info we can all see that those who have AIDS/HIV can be at risk from this virus. We can also see that 80 percent of people won't even be aware of the virus' existence and the remaining people will all recover bar those with chronic underlying health conditions.

I REPEAT this is NOT a pandemic but a government orchestrated panic. So thanks for sharing the reasons for your fear Barry we are beginning to see the underlying reasons for your intense fear to go outside. Mackers maybe we all need to stay indoors, there is snow and ice outside we could slip and fall...?

Delighted to say the kids in Derry are whizzing down the hill in the park on sleds.

HIV can be spread by heterosexual intercourse as well as homosexual since it is transmitted by bodily fluids.

If you are attributing these views to me, then, to be charitable, you are mistaken. But, as I am rapidly finding out, facts based debates with conspiracy wingnuts is futile. It really interests me what predisposes believers in Covid-19 denialism and opponents of vaccination (as well in the David Ickes of this world) to believe such dangerous rubbish.

    1. Ah I get you now, and I agree this is a complete cockup and shows the Tory bastards up for their criminal lack of funding for the NHS..BUT...

It's a real virus. My neice has had it, the healthcare system in OZ went berzerk as it managed to run amok in the Aged Care sector as it caught everyone by surprise bi how infectious it is.

And But-But....the healthcare system can't cope. Regardless of whether you think it's a bad flu or not, the potential knock-on affect would simply swamp the hospitals. I'm not talking about ACTUAL infections, what I mean is that if you open up the normal day to day maladies like car accidents, OD's, Heartattacks et al go back to normal levels (the levels the hospitals can cope with) then it will simply fail. No amount of NHS funding can cope with this and it's not simply a matter of funding. To have that surge capacity in the healthcare system would require billions, and NO party would commit that to something that may never happen.

Michael Hutchence was only after a wank and look what happened with that plastic bag!

Turns out evidence is emerging / documents that show Fauci recommenced funding for research into the creation of covid viruses in labs including funding to Wuhan for this research. Obama had ceased it in 2014 but it was later restarted. Turns out Fauci was the man.

Because Fauci had been recommending funding for research into the creation Covid viruses in labs does not mean that it automatically follow that the virus was engineered. Fauci is documented as recommencing and financing this research after Obama ordered it's ending. Asked it these experiments were not possibly dangerous he replied it's a risk worth taking. He should face the consequences for his actions and decisions not be paid half a million bucks to clean up his own mess by locking up the planet.

Eat out to help out yeah but no but yeah..lock downs don't work UK has highest death rate they are saying.

It's only a lethal disease to those already at deaths door in the main. The stats and reality don't justify lock down.

Boris and co. are trying to cover their uselessness at anything unrelated to pilfering public money by harsher restrictions.

I don't want anyone to die Steve but old and sick people have been dying for quite some time. Fauci and Witty won't reverse that trend.

One piece of good news. Now that Biden is in and Trump gone the WHO has apparently reset the test criteria. Maybe it's dropped from 40+ cycles to 30 now. Maybe the positives being read out like fatalities every day may deminish rapidly.

    1. Larry,

It has without doubt been a balls up. But yeah, it will begin to taper off if it hasn't already soon. Vaxxing and isolating will eventually get it under control...but it'll be another 12 months I think and the rest of the world? It'll depend on money. Just heard that nobody is supplying the Palestinians with a vax...

  32. Barry when you go beyond the MSM you will discover it was not discovered it was created so scientists could investigate and search for effective vaccines. Honourable enough. But Obama stopped funding and Fauci started it up again. He stated the risks were worth taking. All he has been doing this last year is trying to clean up and cover up a mess he created. Barry covid is flu.

  33. Steve R yes I think it could be another 18 months before any semblance of a rationality and logic will be permitted to set in. Because these guys in usual true to form style as with banking criminality and austerity whilst pilfering the public purse non stop will have kicked the can sufficiently far enough down the road to get away with it all AGAIN. They will manufacture dream up a new crisis or potential threat/distraction and covid like Cash for Ash and Red Sky and NAMA etc etc will all be old news. I see young McGlinchey has a heartwarming article on here about volunteering. Isn't it amazing governments can give 22 billion a pop to their mates but health services everywhere remain in need of volunteering decent people to GET THINGS DONE....
