✈ spent the weekend binge-watching ZeroZeroZero, the latest Italian crime series based on one of the books written by journalist Roberto Saviano.

Saviano's first book Gomorrah was also turned into a TV series. The impact of that book was so huge in exposing the Camorra crime organisation that it put him on their hit list, and the author has been on around the clock police protection since 2006.

ZeroZeroZero is the nickname among narco-traffickers for the purest cocaine on the market.

The series follows a huge shipment of cocaine as it travels from Mexico to Italy. The episodes move back and forth between, 'The Brokers', an American shipping family headed by Gabriel Byrne, 'The Sellers,' a Mexican cartel and 'The Buyers', a mafia family in rural Italy.

The elderly but still powerful Don Minu is bent over with age and he hides out in the mountains. He needs the shipment to stop an impending war between local families.

He might look like an old man you'd stop to help across a road but we find out that the old Don is utterly ruthless, so much so that he killed his own son because he had started a previous war.

His grandson is hell bent on getting revenge for his father's killing and he wants to feed his grandfather to the pigs. He is determined to stop the shipment getting through in order to turn the other families against the old man.

Make no mistake about it, this series is brutal in it's depiction of the violence used by those who profit from the drugs trade. There are no good guys, just evil people intent on making money no matter what the cost.

If you liked Narcos and Gomorrah then this series is a combination of the two. It jumps between English, Italian, Spanish and French languages so you'll need to use subtitles throughout.

    Dixie,

I will definitely give that a go if its likened to Narcos ... what a series that was. I don't mind the subtitles, in fact I think they keep you focused and they add a touch of reality to the story

I found season 5 of The Bureau on a pay per view channel called Sundance. We had to pay 5.99 for a months trial and binge watched them all in a week. I've no idea why such a quality drama is not on the big channels.
