Bernardo O'ReillyThe lazy and disingenuous reporting of the militant opposition to Saturday’s fascist rally (10 Oct.) in Dublin shows the level that some of our media has sunk to.

Their ‘cut and paste’ reporting exposed a lack of real journalism in Ireland. The fear of politically aware working-class militant anti-fascists scared the establishment to a degree where the actual fascists were portrayed as the victims. History has shown that the establishment and their media are more comfortable with fascism than they are with an organised working class.

Nowhere in their commentaries and articles did these reporters ask the pertinent question of why the National Party (NP) fascists were previously allowed assault individuals in front of the police or why it required a sustained baton charge against anti-fascists by the same cops to defend the NP goons who had openly gloated about their previous cowardly attacks.

The failure of the media to expose, or simply even ask questions about, the fascist ideology of the NP and the violence against individuals which follows it has given comfort and encouragement to them and their fellow travellers.

  1. To hear your man report this you'd think it was the OK corral. Reclaimed the G.P.O, for fucks sake. Is this what passes for militancy now is it?

  2. I think the charge here is less one of the media missing the message and more one of it manipulating the message. If the message is not delivered for whatever reason then the method of its transmission has to be up for discussion.
Some like to play down the far right which I think is foolish. But I also think that we know more about their rise from what has been reported in the media than we do from the counter demos.
For the Left, tackling the far right is hardly an issue for debate. It is a given. How best to do that needs further exploration.
