Councillor Cieran Perry did not support the election of a Green Party Mayor for Dublin. In his address to the council he explained why.

Last night a new Lord Mayor was elected by Dublin City councillors. Hazel Chu of the Green Party was the choice of the majority of the councillors.

Due to the Greens supporting the giveaway of the public lands at O’Devaney Gardens and their participation in Government with Fine Gael & Fianna Fail I couldn’t support Cllr Chu and as no progressive candidate contested the position I abstained. See my expanded comments below.

On a personal level I believe you will make an excellent Lord Mayor and if that upsets the racist & fascist clowns that will be an added bonus.

Unfortunately I cannot vote for a Green Party candidate given the party has overwhelmingly voted to enter Government with the those directly responsible for the housing crisis, a chaotic health system and an underfunded education system.

It didn’t have to be public housing OR cycle lanes. It didn’t have to be a single tier health system OR environmental improvements. It could have been all.

A huge proportion of people voted for change in February and the continuation of a neoliberal Government wasn’t what they voted for. Despite the media campaign to convince the Greens to enter Government with the civil war parties I believe you have betrayed those who voted for the Greens in expectation of real change.

An obvious indication of the desperation to facilitate Fine Gael & Fianna Fail was the Green Party support for the giveaway of the public lands at O’Devaney Gardens to a private developer. I’ve always argued that politicians should be judged by their actions not their words and when the Greens and the Social Democrats joined Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour in giving away public lands it was clear what side of the class war you were on.
