From the Irish Times ➤ the United States under Trump has become a laughing stock.

By Fintan O'Toole

Usually, when this kind of outlandish idiocy is displaying itself, there is the comforting thought that, if things were really serious, it would all stop. People would sober up. Instead, a large part of the US has hit the bottle even harder.

US President Donald Trump has claimed he was being sarcastic and testing the media when he raised the idea that injecting disinfectant or irradiating the body with ultraviolet light might kill coronavirus.

Over more than two centuries, the United States has stirred a very wide range of feelings in the rest of the world: love and hatred, fear and hope, envy and contempt, awe and anger. But there is one emotion that has never been directed towards the US until now: pity.

  1. Most leaders, elected or not, can reasonably claim to be rational actors even Putin's kleptocracy and Kim Jong-Un's Korean paradise has degrees of rationality and clear strategic tninking behind theme.

What is chilling about Trump is that he can not be seen as a rational actor as psychotic policy making style shows. I can only think of one other leader in human history whose leadership style fell into the same category. He was an unsuccessful artist from Austria and whose birthday fell on 18th April .....

  2. More hysterics from Fintan. This virus is fast becoming political. In whose interests would it be best to prolong it?

it is only becoming political because of the unpreparedness of certain countries like the UK and the criminal denial of scientific evidence by Trump, Bolinasoro, Maduro, Lufschenko and others.

  5. Don't know why there's a gnashing of teeth over Trump's US farce, the States are not a democracy but a corporatocracy, with a bought congress on all sides.

But don't make the error that Trump is a fool, he's a narcissist who is unbelievably good at self-promotion. I read the autobiography of the black lady who won The Apprentice and joined his White House team.

She dislikes him but is the first to point out he's not stupid, all the jabbing and sparring on TV with the Press is theatre and he loves it. The audience quibbles about sound-bites while he really doesn't have to do anything regarding policy.

In this instance he astutely see's the vulnerable underbelly of middle America. They are the majority who still believe in the American Dream and think that one day they will no longer be working joe's but rich, affluent pillars of society through their hard work.

Trump see's that as a predator does, taps into it with rehetoric and easily digestible soundbites for the masses that will "Make America Great Again".

Someone once said that Americans behave as though they "are temporarily embarressed millionaires", and one day they'll realize their own version of the dream.

Trump doesn't give a shit. He only seriously ran for the White House when Obama roasted him at the infamous dinner, and only then to give the bird to Obama. He isn't a shill for anybody but himself so he can slash taxes and red tape to give a instant boost to Middle America so they'll vote for him again. He wants a second term more than he ever wanted the first and this makes him highly volatile in my opinion.

I feel like a Doomsayer but the world is a powderkeg like no other time in History, and it is times like these that irrational acts lead to war. I hope I'm wrong.
