Sean McGuigan explains the purpose of Aontacht. Sean McGuigan is Aontacht PRO.

Aontacht is an Irish republican organisation made up of various shades of Republican opinion. We were born out of the 2016 Easter Commemoration Committee which held the very successful “Peoples Parade” last year.

Our main aim is to commemorate republican events that occurred throughout our history. We are completely independent and we welcome any republican person who believes in republican unity and commemorating our patriot dead.

We hope to make the 24th April “Republic Day” as important to Irish republicans as Bastille Day is to the French and Independence Day is to Americans.

We call on all Republican groups and organisations to reach out to us - as we will be reaching out to you - to make “Republic Day” a landmark date in the Republican calendar.

We will be having our first “Republic Day” commemoration on Sunday 23rd April 2017 (the closest Sunday to the 24th April). It will be leaving North Belfast making its way through Royal Avenue onto the Falls and then onto Milltown cemetery.

We call upon all republicans to unite behind us and commemorate the men, women and children of 1916 who stepped forward when needed and paid the supreme sacrifice for our country.

How can we expect to unite Ireland when we struggle to unite ourselves . There is an onus on each and every Republican in this country to put aside our differences and pay homage to the sacrifices that where made. The deeds and actions of our patriot dead demand it of us.

  1. I would have thought that is what Easter Monday is?? And republicans of differing hues celebrate it, or don't, in their own way.

  2. The 24th April is the exact date of the rising . Surley all republicans should unite as the men and women of 1916 where able to do even though many disagreed politically . Loyalists march on the 12 th every year together even though they disagree a lot more than republicans . There is so little that divides republicans .

  3. Maybe this new day is for Socialists/Marxists/Troks and other atheist Republicans so that they won't be tainted with the Easter/Good Friday thing?

  4. "How can we expect to unite Ireland..." So a fleg parade to a graveyard should do the trick.

  5. It's a start . Uniting republicans is a noble cause . Why any so called republican Wouldn't want republicanism united and stronger is beyond me. Republicanism sadly has always had people on the sidelines full of negativity . Hopefully this march is a smal step in a long road
