Latest Statement from Cógus, Cabhair and IRPWA POWs' in Maghaberry: 31/8/14
  • On Sunday August 31st 2014, Cógus, Cabhair and IRPWA POWs' in Maghaberry Gaol, County Down issued the following joint statement in relation to the current situation inside the British Prison:

A Chairde,

Following a process of on-going discussion and analysis between the representatives of all Republican Political Prisoners in Roe House Republican Wing it has been agreed that the use of all facilities and physical space will be on a shared basis from Monday 1st September 2014.

The Maghaberry GAOL ADMINISTRATION will be made aware of this new dispensation immediately.

Decisions relating to the utilisation of the limited space available in Roe will be regulated through the agreement of the representatives of Republican Prisoner groups and no-one else.

In the past GAOL ADMINISTRATION have exploited relationships between Republican Prisoners to foster and exasperate tensions so as to create division and disharmony. This has been to subvert the August 2010 agreement generally but in particular it is a last ditch effort to “legitimise” its discredited and condemned controlled movement policy.

All Republican Prisoners are united in our determination to resist all British State criminalisation efforts. Equally we are committed to taking whatever action we deem necessary to achieve the implementation of the August 2010 agreement; which alone provides the route towards the establishment of a CONFLICT-FREE ENVIRONMENT".

  1. Encouraging, and painfully overdue but

All Republican Prisoners are united in our determination to resist all British State criminalisation efforts.

Even the ones that are pleading guilty?

  3. AM, Isn’t pleading guilty an acceptance of criminalisation?
PS I think you had written something on this yourself, and regretted not seeking a reduced sentence etc. I know why it would be done, but it seems a contradiction to me.

  4. Did Kieran Nugent accept criminalisation? He led the charge against it.

It never lost me a night's sleep but it was foolish not to take the deal. The political is in the action that leads people to go to jail not in the plea which is a pragmatic move.

Why serve twenty when you can get away with five?

  5. Maghaberry prison: Dissident republicans inmates seek changes to jail regime

Maghaberry Prison: Document outlines dissident republican demands

The BBC has obtained a copy of a 14-page document outlining the changes that dissident republicans want to see implemented in Northern Ireland's highest security jail

    Dissident inmates seek jail changes
Tensions and disputes between republican prisoners and the prison authorities are nothing new.

There are currently about 50 dissident republicans being held in Maghaberry prison near Lisburn, County Antrim.

The majority of them, 31, are aligned to the group referred to as the New IRA.

The group has accused the Northern Ireland Prison Service of breaking the terms of an agreement to relax security, and have sent the authorities a document containing a wide range of proposed changes.

The BBC has obtained a copy of the 14-page paper, called a conditions document.

In a section dealing with security issues, the document says there should be:

no restriction on movement of prisoners within their wing

an end to day and night time lock-ups

    an end to strip searching

The document also calls for an overhaul of arrangements for family visits.

    These include:

a new cubicle layout to maximise privacy

an end to the fingerprinting and photographing of children

a play park, complete with swings and slides space to hold activities marking special occasions, and to take family photographs

fewer searches and less use of drug detection dogs, which the document says are an unnecessary measure.
