Background: According to Unicef, of every ten children in the world, one lives in a war zone. A child is killed by violence every five minutes in the world with most of those deaths occurring outside war zones. Those living in poverty are more likely to be the victims of violence. Millions feel unsafe in their homes, schools and communities.

Children victims of violence have brain activity similar to soldiers exposed to combat and more than 30% are likely to develop long-lasting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Only 41 countries have an explicit ban on violence against children. We need a safer world for children today.
