Tommy McKearney ☭ May I beg to differ with the carefully created mainstream media consensus surrounding Micheál Martin’s meeting last month with US president Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance?
4-April-2025

Ireland’s establishment media took the view that the Taoiseach had very skilfully handled an incredibly challenging situation and had, thankfully, exited the White House without having his ears slapped, à la Zelensky.

Admittedly, it was accepted that Trump has threatened to remove Ireland’s pharmaceutical industry and greatly reduce the amount of exports to the US. Nevertheless, this was practically brushed aside with the excuse that it was essential not to antagonise the Donald. After all, as we were repeatedly reminded, Ireland is beholden to the USA for our supposed “prosperity” thanks to the generosity of their multinationals bestowing us with the benefits arising from foreign direct investment (FDI).

Overlooked in this round of self-serving applause was the fact that the Irish government had achieved absolutely nothing. A fact made embarrassingly clear mere days later, when Trump insulted the entire Dublin administration by hosting the disgraced MMA fighter Conor McGregor on St Patrick’s Day. Indeed, if anything, Martin had reinforced the Irish state’s position of being subservient to the whims of US imperialism: a situation that is an affront to any notion of Irish sovereignty in the first instance but still worse, is detrimental in the long term to the welfare of the overwhelming majority of this country’s people.

For starters, the over-dependence on a small number of multi-national corporations for state revenue and significant employment has been recognised even by free-market economists as a high-risk strategy. Not only are such companies highly mobile and without any organic commitment to Ireland, are liable to take their business elsewhere depending on circumstances. These circumstances may be simply a more attractive offer elsewhere or as a result of arm-twisting by the White House imposing tariffs. This latter option is clearly now on the table and may only be a matter of time before being implemented.

Moreover, there is also the risk that the United States may fall into economic recession or indeed depression. The plethora of erratic measures being abruptly introduced by Donald Trump may inflict damage on the economy. Tariffs coupled with deportation of migrant workers may have the effect of merely increasing prices without benefiting US citizens and thus leading to economic meltdown.

Moreover, the United States has a huge national debt currently in excess of $36 trillion. Influential conservative politicians in Washington believe that this level of debt is unsustainable and are campaigning to have it curbed. To do so, their intention is to cut back on welfare, health and domestic social investment.

Under either scenario there would be a dramatic reduction in American consumer spending, with an obvious detrimental impact on the purchase of Irish imports.

Strange as it may seem but none of this is news to the Dublin government or the Irish ruling class. Indeed, the ESRI and IDA have gone public with their concerns and it now obvious, after Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe’s interview recently on RTE’s This Week programme, that these fears are shared by those in government.

In reality therefore, Micheál Martin’s cringe-inducing, hand-wringing performance in the Oval Office, rather than being masterly politics was a futile exercise, at least from the standpoint of the broad mass of the Irish public.

By any normal rationale, the Dublin government and its Taoiseach should be concentrating their efforts on developing viable alternatives to the state’s absolute dependency on US multi-nationals. In fact, to do so would provide the Republic with a bargaining hand in any showdown with the Trump administration.

But by going down that path would surely involve creating trade relations with countries outside the Western economic zone. Contemporary manufacturing is focusing increasingly on digital technology and climate-sensitive products, utilising solar energy and electric powered transport, and we all know who leads the field in these areas. Along with excelling across the entire high-tech sector, Chinese scientists have taken a lead in Artificial Intelligence, and their factories dominate the electric vehicle market worldwide.

Therein lies the real reason for Micheál Martin’s obsequious simpering in Trump’s office. Not so much to fend off the imposition of tariffs which will or will not happen regardless of an Irish Taoiseach’s intervention, and well he and his coalition know this. Rather, it was done deliberately to reinforce a narrative that Ireland is dependent on and best served by US-led capitalism and by that alone.

Because any real alternative, no matter how beneficial to the working class, would undermine the privileged position currently enjoyed by Ireland’s comprador bourgeoisie. Hence too the ringing endorsement by the establishment media of the Fianna Fáil leader kowtowing in Washington.

Still, on a note of optimism, Martin would hardly have subjected himself to such humiliation had he been confident of the permanence of the current class structure in Ireland. Let’s ensure, therefore, that his worst fears are realised in a workers’ republic.

Micheál Martin’s Visit To US 🪶 A Managed Car Crash

Caoimhin O’MuraileIrish Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste, Simon Harris, were in Washington for the annual Saint Patricks celebrations (piss up) and the traditional handing over the bowl of Shamrock to the US President.

This year was somewhat different from all previous years because this particular President, Donald Trump, cares less about Ireland, her culture, and the situation in the six counties than most of his predecessors. Yes, he went through the niceties of pretending to accept graciously the bowl of Shamrock in much the same way as did Joe Biden (who thinks he’s Irish) last year when he was President but the gesture clearly lacked the sincerity of Biden and Obama before him or even George W. Bush in the early 2000s.

Trump was obviously, to anybody who watched the ceremony, going through the motions and not over convincingly either. This ceremony or farce took place a couple of days before the main event on 17th March, Saint-Patricks-day, when it is traditional for the President to invite the Irish Taoiseach and Tanaiste to the White House as guests of honour. This year Trump decided to invite, as his guest, former Mixed Martial Arts fighter Conor McGregor, claiming Mr McGregor to be his “favourite Irishman” which was a bit of a kick in the teeth for the 26 Counties political leaders! White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed; “the administration could not think of a better guest to have with us on St. Patricks Day”. Little wonder she gave this description as both Trump and McGregor are convicted felons!

McGregor entered the scene with a shout of “happy Saint Patricks Day America” before he went on stage in his usual flamboyant manner showing off as he once did before an MMA fight. He then went into a tirade of attacks on the 26 county governments policies on immigration and lack of concern for the Irish People shown by this administration. He claimed; “Ireland and America are siblings” and went on to say; “the United States will look after its little brother”, meaning Donald Trump will look after Irish racists whose policies the President in many respects shares. His condemnation of the 26 County States Government went on to say; “issues the people of Ireland face the Irish Government has long since abandoned the people of Ireland”. He continued with this tirade of racist rubbish which, alas, many political illiterates will agree with: “The illegal immigration racket is running ravage around the country, Ireland is losing its Irishness”.

These comments and attacks on the official political representatives of the Irish people must have been music to the ears of President Donald Trump who himself hates people of different cultures including, if he’s honest, the ‘Irish undocumented’.

The irony is the USA including its President are a nation of immigrants. They are from all corners of the globe from China to Europe including Ireland and Trump himself has Scottish roots. Yet, here we have a political illiterate condemning immigration into Ireland when the people he was addressing were, every one of them, immigrants at some point in their history. In fact in Ireland the Celts were not the indigenous people of the country. No, they came from central Europe when the Germanic tribes from the north displaced them. The truth is, and this applies to any country on earth, none of us can claim not to descend from people who came from somewhere else and this includes Ireland. For example, in 1171, King Henry II through a charter granted Dublin to his “men of Bristol”. The charter stated it was for ‘Bristolians to colonise the city’ and many of them did as people from Bristol came to Dublin. This means today, many Dubliners, including possibly Conor McGregor, may be by ancestry Bristolians. if this were to be the case which football team Conor, Bristol City or Bristol Rovers? Many of the original Anglo/Norman colonisers (not to be mistaken with the Tudor colonisers of 16th and 17th centuries) became known as ‘the Old English’ and these people intermarried with the native Irish adopting Irish customs and clothing and having families which were ‘more Irish than the Irish’. This led to the ‘Statute of Kilkenny 1366’ but I’m deviating from the topic under discussion. The comments made by the former MMA fighter may have appealed to the older generation of Irish Americans who cling on to Eamon de Valera’s view of a Gaelic Catholic Ireland steeped in religious beliefs, practices and superstitions but modern Ireland is multi-cultural and has many different races and ethnicities in its population.

The Irish Tanaiste, (simple) Simon Harris, one of those who should have been a guest of the President along with Taoiseach, Micheal Martin, on Saint Patricks Day, stated; “Conor McGregor does not represent Ireland” and continued; “the President can invite whoever he likes to his home” which was a diplomatic way of pretending he was not feeling humiliated. Nice try, Simon, but through that brave face you posed the reality could not be hidden. It would appear this US President has a fetish almost about humiliating other world leaders particularly those from smaller countries like the Ukraine and now, it appears, Ireland. He humiliated Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, publicly on world television a couple of weeks back and now, in a less obvious way, Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste Simon Harris. Perhaps you should not have gone lads after all you knew Trump can’t stand your policies! Ireland “you have a target on your back” Trump recently commented!

There is an old adage, ‘do not put your shovel where there is no shit.’ Martin and Harris would claim they were looking after Irish investments and Irish jobs, people employed by US companies in the 26 Counties. Also the millions of Irish ‘undocumented’ (illegal immigrants) in the USA, the same kind of people McGregor was condemning for being in Ireland - what hypocrisy! Another point of observation, the 26 County administration claim to support and recognise the state of Palestine. If this is genuinely the case what were the two leading lights of this administration doing licking the arse of Israel's largest arms supplier? Arms used to bomb the crap out of Gaza and Trump has pledged more arms for Israel to carry out more attacks on defenceless Palestinian women and children, a slight contradiction perhaps on behalf of the Irish leaders? He also wishes to colonise Gaza, making it a ‘US Riviera’ thus kicking out millions of Palestinians forever. Micheal Martin also claims he is defending jobs in Ireland of those employed by US business in the 26 County state who, Mr Martin would have us believe, may relocate in another country if he does not court the US President. This is, of course, nonsense as the low corporation tax, weak or non-existent trade unions, and a low paid yet highly educated workforce amassing huge profits for these US firms are the factors which dictate where these TNCs (Transnational Corporations) will locate irrespective of what Donald Trump says or doesn’t say. Business in the capitalist world is bigger than any world political leader.

Harris has recently spoke of “mutual respect” between the United Sates and “Ireland” which from where I’m sitting amounts to the 26-county administration showing the Trump government a grovelling lick arsing respect and Trump showing nothing but contempt in return. Mutual respect between any two countries must be a two-way street and this is very much a one-way avenue. Harris was referring to the Tariffs which Trump is threatening the European Union with and which the 26-county state are part of. Harris is giving the impression the present administration can do a separate deal outside the EU which, to my knowledge, they cannot!

Trump and McGregor share more than an agreement of far-right politics. They both have records for sex offences! ‘McGregor’s visit to the White House came months after he was found civilly liable in a High Court damages case in Dublin taken by a woman who accused him of rape. Nikita Hand, also known as Nikita Ni Laimhin, won her claim against McGregor after accusing the professional MMA fighter of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018. Ms Hand, 35, was awarded damages and costs after a three-week trial last year in which the jury found him civilly liable for assault. A judge at the High Court in Dublin later said that the jury had conclusively determined that McGregor had raped Ms Hand’ (Irish Daily Mirror 18th March 2025). As can be gleaned by this quote Conor McGregor was lucky the case was a civil and not criminal trial thus allowing him to escape jail and being put on a sex offenders register. Ms Hand was awarded €248,000 for her ordeal at the hands of the former MMA fighter, payable by McGregor.

President Trump himself is no stranger to allegations of sexual misconduct and before his 2016 election tapes were produced on which Trump said; “they love it” referring to women being touched uninvited in sensitive places. In July 2006 Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Gregory Clifford), an American pornographic film star, met the future presidential hopeful at a celebrity golf tournament. Under oath Daniels said; “she was invited to dinner and to meet him at his hotel room”. Daniels testified that “Trump asked her many questions about her life”, and at some point, she told him she had “grown up poor”. She eventually used the bathroom in his hotel room, but on re-emerging “was surprised to find Trump stripped to his underwear sitting on the bed”. Obviously, Trump had more than dinner in mind and Daniels testified saying “I think we should go and moved towards the door” but Trump allegedly stood in her way saying in part, “this is the only way you’re getting out of the trailer park.” Apparently, they then had sex but Daniels said; “it wasn’t something I wanted.” Perhaps Trump has difficulty telling the difference between adult entertainment fantasy films and real life. Just because Stormy Daniels performs sexual gymnastics with different men in her pornographic films does not necessarily mean she does so in real life!

It must be wondered what the content of private conversation between ‘Don and Con’ was? Could the two sexual predators have discussed their conquests and bedroom antics, after they had sorted out the immigration problems as they see it? Well, there is an old saying, ‘birds of a feather flock together’ and this is certainly the case when speaking of Donald Trump and Conor McGregor! From a political point of view and after the protocol of Saint Patrick's week was out of the way it is clear the US President would rather have spent the 17th March in the company of a fellow alleged sex predator than with the political leaders of the 26 County Irish state!

What happened on 17th March 2025 was a deliberate rebuke of the 26 County administration by the White House with Conor McGregor receiving more coverage than Micheal Martin or Simon Harris. McGregor conducted what amounted to his own press conference in which he attacked the 26 County Government's policies. It was a humiliation for Mr Martin and Mr Harris who, love or loath their policies, are the political leaders of the 26 Counties. It was typical of Trump's far-right political agenda and McGregor fitted the bill perfectly.

Donald Trump Prefers Fellow Felon To Micheal Martin and Simon Harris

Dr John Coulter ✍ Today is St Patrick’s Day as we commemorate our national saint who is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and thereby marking the end of the influence of the ancient Celtic pagan religions on the island of Ireland.

However, it will be in Washington where all political eyes will be focused to see how the current Dublin administration plays its cards with the new Trump Presidency. Clearly, Taoiseach Micheal Martin will be very diplomatic with his words to avoid any repeat of a public Zelenskyy-style put-down as witnessed by the world’s media a few weeks ago.

In Martin’s case, he would be well advised not to sing the praises of the European Union given Trump’s view that the EU was established to ‘screw’ the United States.

With a large chunk of the pan nationalist front, namely Sinn Fein, the SDLP and Alliance Party, boycotting the traditional White House St Patrick’s Day celebrations over the situation in Gaza, Martin will have to be careful that he is not politically tarred - and treated - with the same brush because of the actions of the pan nationalist front.

Martin has already rattled Brexiteer cages on this side of the Pond following a recent Anglo-Irish meeting in which he promised to do “anything we can” to help the United Kingdom get closer to the EU.

However, such seemingly pleasant platitudes should be taken with a large pinch of salt when coming from a Dublin administration. Put bluntly, when has a Dublin administration really wanted to ‘help the UK’?

There is clearly an underlying Dublin agenda at work here. In spite of Northern Ireland as a region of the UK voting Remain in the 2016 referendum on EU membership, the UK as a whole voted Leave and Brexit has become a reality.

One reality for any Dublin government is that it is now geographically isolated from the rest of the EU. Put equally bluntly, is Dublin’s offer of ‘anything we can’ really a bid by the Southern Irish administration to stab the UK in the back politically over the EU?

In reality, the ‘anything we can’ pledge is really a political stunt and must be seen for what it is - part of the Southern Irish government’s campaign to push for a border poll on Irish Unity.

Given Trump’s tariff threats, what Dublin really fears is not the UK outside the EU, but the Trump administration in the United States. That new American administration despises the EU with a passion.

Put in Ulster terms, the Trump tariff tactic could well be the political iceberg which sinks the EU Titanic. Is it any wonder Dublin wants to help the UK get closer to the EU. Dublin needs the UK back in the EU should any harmful trade war break out between Dublin and the Trump Oval Office.

It is no secret there are those within the current British Labour Party who would like to see another referendum held on the UK rejoining the EU. Dublin will be most certainly be pushing for such a referendum under the general banner of ‘anything we can’ to help the UK/EU relations.

Dublin knows full well that if the UK can resist such a move in terms of rejoining the EU while the Trump administration is in power, Southern Ireland may have to seriously consider the political nuclear option - leaving the EU itself!

Just as a decade ago, Brexit was seen as a non-starter, at the moment Irexit is also viewed as practically impossible. But if Trump puts the tight squeeze on the Southern Irish economy, might Dublin have to ‘jump ship’ politically from the EU to avoid the fallout from hard-hitting tariffs designed to ‘screw’ the EU?

This new Trump administration is well known for its lively public press conferences. While UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron were able to escape unscathed from the public wrath of Trump, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not so lucky.

Likewise, Unionist representatives, such as Stormont Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, should be in their elements on St Patrick’s Day at the White House in terms of having a ‘word in the ear’ of Trump with no Sinn Fein representatives to contradict her.

The pan nationalist front may come in the long-term to regret snubbing the White House today. As the conversations take place in the White House, who will score the bigger points - the glowing orange shamrock from the Unionists, or Micheal Martin’s wilting green shamrock?

It was a joke with a jibe in post Second World War politics in trying to rebuild Anglo-German relations - don’t mention the war! Move it to 2025 politics, Martin would be well advised - don’t mention the EU!

If Martin escapes the White House without a Trump tongue-lashing about the EU, he could mark this with an extra large measure of ‘drowning the shamrock’.

The ultimate embarrassment for Martin could be another public White House press conference where Trump responds to receiving the traditional gift of shamrock with the quip - ‘so when are you Irish boyos quitting the EU that screwed us?’ We Brexiteers live in hope!

Beware Of Dublin Parties Bearing Gifts This St Patrick’s Day!

Dr John Coulter ✍ At first, when An Garda Siochana issued a statement confirming the Southern Irish police force is monitoring “potential threats” to St Patrick’s Day events next Monday that are “inciting attacks on behalf of (Islamic State)” online, my initial reaction was that this was some sort of early April fool prank.

Who in their right mind would want to attack celebrations to mark Ireland’s national saint, Patrick, the man accredited with bringing the Christian faith to Ireland thereby marking the end of the influence of the ancient Celtic pagan religions on the island.

After all, 17th March is commemorated right across the globe. Its the one day in the year that no matter what your background, you can claim to be Irish, or have Irish ancestry in your family tree no matter how many generations, decades or even centuries you have to go back!

However, the seriousness of this warning from the Gardai should not be underestimated and security forces across the world in countries where St Patrick’s Day will be marked would do well to heed the advice from the Southern Irish police force.

Islamic radicals have initiated a new change in terrorism since the 1970s and the height of the Troubles on the island of Ireland.

Gone are the days of the mid 1970s when the UDA openly marched in their hundreds through the streets of Northern Ireland in their campaign to bring down the then power-sharing Sunningdale Executive.

Like the original Ulster Volunteer Force of 1912, which was a militia formed to combat Home Rule, terror groups on both sides of the political divide during the early years of the Troubles formed themselves along traditional military lines with brigades, battalions, platoons and companies.

Ironically, it was to be a middle class terror group in West Germany, the Red Army Faction, commonly known as the Baader-Meinhof gang, after two of its key terrorist members Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, which was to change the nature of terrorism from an Army-style military structure to the Maoist cell structure, named after the Chinese communist revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.

This made it harder for the intelligence community to penetrate the terror cells because in many cases one cell did not know the membership of another cell.

However, as intelligence gathering by the various security forces became more sophisticated - especially with the use of recruiting and using informers - the penetration of terror groups, especially the loyalist and republican gangs in Northern Ireland, became more efficient.

The dissident republican movement attempted to thwart this tactic by the security forces by forming different organisations, each with their own separate command structure.

During the Troubles, when there was essentially one Provisional IRA movement and one INLA movement, the dissidents were formed into Continuity IRA, Real IRA, New IRA, Republican Action Against Drugs and Oglaigh na hEireann (ONH).

Even then, increasing surveillance methodology improved that even this multi-group structure could be bypassed.

It was the Islamic terrorists who then changed the whole nature of terrorism by masterminding the concept of the so-called ‘lone wolf’ - a single person who had been radicalised who would carry out one single terrorist atrocity usually involving the tactic of the suicide bomber.

Targets would be selected, not because of their military or political significance or importance, but because of the number of people present at the events.

The Islamic terrorist would have been brainwashed into believing that dozens of female virgins were waiting for him once he entered paradise.

Until the advent of the ‘lone wolf’ suicide bomber, the supposed golden rule of terrorist groups was how to plan the escape of the terrorists once they had carried out their gun or bomb attacks.

Put bluntly, with the Islamic radical ‘lone wolf’ strategy, there is no escape for the terrorist as they die or are captured in the attack itself. The problem then becomes for the security forces - how do we identity potential Islamic terrorists who have been radicalised into carrying out such ‘lone wolf’ attacks?

Next Monday, 17 March, will see thousands of people in Ireland alone - north and south - celebrate, either as participants or watching in the crowds, St Patrick’s Day parades and events.

Without wishing to be scaremongering, potentially these make prime targets for Islamic radical terror mentality. Not only is it a vast gathering of innocent people, but also such an attack can be portrayed by Islamic radical theology as an attack on Christianity given St Patrick’s role in the Christian faith.

Even if security is so tight that an Islamic radical cannot penetrate the security cordon, it does not answer the long-term question of how to defeat the radicalisation of Muslims to the point where they believe terror tactics are the only way to express their specific theology.

After all, whilst we pray that St Patrick’s Day celebrations pass off peacefully across the globe, we still have the many commemorations coming up this year to mark the 80th anniversary of both VE (Victory in Europe) Day and VJ (Victory over Japan) Day which brought the military horrors of the Second World War to an end in 1945.

In combating this brand of Islamic radical, a lot of onus must rest with moderate Muslim clerics who must get the clear message across to their flocks on a regular basis that theological radicalisation is wrong and runs contrary to the teachings of the Quran.

Whilst it may take time for moderate Islamic clerics to win the theological struggle, it may be necessary for the security services to do more than simply monitor suspected ‘lone wolf’ radicals.

Given the sophistication of surveillance techniques compared to the early Seventies in Northern Ireland, the time has now come to introduce selective internment of suspected terrorists, whether they be from an Islamic radical nature, or Far Right trying to incite a race war. Both factions are equally dangerous.

There is also the online battle. Those who use the internet to peddle hate must be tracked down, brought before the courts, convicted and given very lengthy jail terms - not in months, but in years.

No doubt the mere mention of the word ‘internment’ will bring howls of anger from the woke liberal factions in our society screaming that such measures would infringe the human rights of those suspected terrorists. But what about the human rights of their victims or intended victims? Should their safety and human rights not be equality guaranteed?

For the overwhelming majority of folk, St Patrick’s Day is a family occasion. We do not want to enter a situation, where as a society, we have to seriously consider cancelling much-loved festivities because evil terrorists simply want to make known their warped agenda.

Gardai Warning On Islamic Terror Threat To St Paddy’s Day Celebrations Is No Spoof!

Gearóid Ó Loingsigh ☭ writing in Substack on 23-February-2025.

When the genocide in Gaza began, no one thought it would go on for so long. But it has, and along the road many challenges have come up for governments, social movements, Arab countries and political parties - and nearly all of them have been found wanting on the issue. In Ireland the annual cringe fest that is St. Patrick’s Day in Washington threw up a problem for Sinn Féin last year. Should they go or not go?

Last year the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign issued a call for all political parties, including government parties, not to go. Sinn Féin broke that call for a boycott and were swiftly pardoned by the IPSC which swiftly invited them to address a Palestinian solidarity rally in Belfast one day before Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O’Neill First Minister of Northern Ireland swanned around with Biden, imbibing of whatever liquor was on offer on the day. Supping the devil’s buttermilk as some of their unionist colleagues might put it.

At the time Sinn Féin said it was going, as it was important and that they would raise the issue of Palestine with Biden. One month before flying out to Washington a Sinn Féin spokesperson stated:

We will use every political and diplomatic opportunity and influence that we have to be a voice for Palestine, to demand an end to the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, for Palestinian statehood and for a permanent ceasefire now.[1]

In the end they did no such thing. In fact, the then Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar was more forceful than Mary Lou or Michelle who made even more tepid statements and quaffed what was put in front of them and enjoyed the jollies. They could have been forgiven for thinking that it would be all over by 2025 and this situation would not arise again. Well, we should be gentle on them, many of us underestimated the Israeli bloodlust. But here we are again. Trump continues with Biden’s genocide and announces his intention to commit two war crimes e.g. the mass expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, a war crime under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and profit from the looting of their assets a further war crime under Article 33 of the same convention.[2]

The SDLP was the first out of the hatches saying it would not go, reaffirming their position of the previous year. It is ironic that Sinn Féin supporters used to refer to the SDLP as the Stoops, a play on their initials, Stoop Down Low Party, which probably means Sinn Féin (SF) should now be known as the Stoop Further. As is common with the Stoop Further, they are fond of speaking out both sides of their mouths. They announced that they would not go this year, though no official invite has been issued to them, and at the same time urged the Irish government to go. A case of wanting to have their cake and eat it too.

Mary Lou McDonald stated Trump’s plan “represents a marked escalation in the very complex conflict situation for the Palestinian people.”[3] Really? Expulsion is an escalation from genocide? To be very clear, there is a specific genocide convention and genocide is a Crime Against Humanity, under that convention, and is so at all times and in all circumstances.[4] There are no ifs or buts to that. Expulsion and profiteering are war crimes. In legal terms, they are egregious crimes but less so than genocide. There is no escalation here. Both Biden and Trump have been complicit in the genocide, Trump however has put the blood-soaked icing on the cake with his proposal. Except it is not his proposal. It has been official US and Israeli policy since 2007.[5] In other words, a plan that began under Bush and continued during the eight years of Obama’s presidency when Biden was the Vice-President, Trump’s first presidency and of course Biden’s four demented years as President.

Mary Lou McDonald seeks to draw a line under her support for the US. There is some mythical line in the sand between the Democrats' support for murder, genocide, torture and Trump’s. In refusing to go to the Blood Fest in Washington she stated that Sinn Féin would not be in a position to challenge Trump’s statements at the Blood Fest (she doesn’t describe it as such, to be clear that is my accurate description). This is surprising as last year, she said that they would challenge Biden on his support for Israel. Before they went off on their junket last year, two days before the St Patrick’s Blood Fest they issued a tame communiqué asking Biden to play a more “constructive role” in Palestine,[6] whatever that is supposed to mean. In fact, part of their public rationale for going was that they could influence US government policy. So, what is different now? Have they concluded that their junket last year did not produce the results they hoped for? Well, they had no expectations that Biden would end US complicity in the genocide and as I already pointed out, when they went their statements were way weaker than the Irish government’s official statements. So, the answer is no. This year they have said they won’t go, but have said the Taoiseach should go:

We absolutely believe that he needs to go and, furthermore, when there, set out unambiguously the Irish position in respect to all of these matters and to push back directly against any threat or goal for the mass expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, the annexation of that land.[7]

If, as last year under Biden, they believed they could influence policy in the same way they now expect the southern Irish government to do, why don’t they go? The answer is one of political expediency. They have calculated that this time round there is no political cost amongst their reactionary base in the USA to boycotting a Trump event and by calling on the Irish government to go, they continue to signal that they are a “reasonable partner” that the Irish state and Trump can do business with. Michelle O’Neill stated that she couldn’t go this year because:

I couldn't in all conscience make that trip at this time. I just think that there are times whenever we'll all reflect, and certainly whenever my grandchildren ask me, what did I do whenever the Palestinian people were suffering, I could say that I stood on the side of humanity.[8]

Except of course, she didn’t. Whilst Biden gladly and gaily supplied Israel with all the military hardware required to carry out a genocide, she did not nothing. In the waning days of Biden’s support for genocide, on January 4th of this year he notified Congress of an additional US $8 billion arms sale to Israel.[9] Yeah, Michelle can tell her grandchildren what she likes, but she supped with the Devil. She took part in a genocide through her endorsement of Biden. Her sudden hypocritical distancing from the same policies under Trump is meaningless.

It is not an ethical position; it is not one based on some internationalist concept of solidarity with the oppressed or even a liberal opposition to genocide and war crimes as they have previously shown no such solidarity or real opposition to such acts when Biden was the war criminal in charge.

No matter how low you think Sinn Féin can stoop, they will always surprise you and Stoop Further.

The St. Patrick’s Day Blood Fest Comes Round Again

Anthony McIntyre  On occasion in previous years I have turned up at the Patrick's Day parade through Drogheda, but never walked in it.

When the children were much younger it was a day out for them to enjoy as we stood behind the safety barriers and enjoyed the pagentry.  In later years I felt I had discovered what drove the snakes out of Ireland – the weather on Patrick’s day rather than the great man himself. There seemed better ways to spend the holiday than getting soaked or chilled.

When I lived in Belfast I never attended a parade there. They never interested me in the way that Easter Sunday republican parades once did. That was until last Friday.

I don't actually set out to annoy the Mr Bean Of Irish Fascism. It seems I do it without even trying. He allows me to live rent free in his hollow head. And ungrateful globalist that I am, I never as much as notice my Irish host.

He, or the type of hatred he promotes, obviously played some part in my decision to take part in the parade. On learning that far right hate groups were directing their venom towards the gay community by intimidating librarians I along with my wife agreed that we would walk with Drogheda Pride in this year's parade.

Our decision was firmed up by elements of the far right turning up at a book event for young gay people in Drogheda's local library, then to later go on social media to complain about the the type of books the library was making available. While there is nothing to indicate that the person in question sought to intimidate or be disruptive when at the library, it seems only a matter of time before what happened in Cork occurs in libraries across the country:

Opposition to certain books aimed at young members of the LGBTQ+ community has taken the form of everything from verbal abuse to disturbing behaviour. In recent days an individual was even observed ripping up a copy of Juno Dawson’s book, This Book is Gay in protest.

This is not an isolated Irish phenomenon. For all its professed hatred of globalism the Irish far right is not averse to joining in a global campaign to advance its hate agenda.

As the Atlantic reported a year ago:

Book banning is back. Texas State Representative Matt Krause recently put more than 800 books on a watch list, many of them dealing with race and LGBTQ issues.

So, with that in mind, and to the consternation of Mr Bean, in drizzle we set off to make our way through the streets of Drogheda to the sounds of the samba. While it might have infuriated the far right, it was wonderful to see the composition of people lining the streets – there was plenty of colour both in terms of skin and décor. Around my neck was a rainbow garland, while in tandem with an Irish mother who too had turned out in support of inclusivity, I carried the rainbow flag. Normally I am averse to flags but the universalism of the rainbow flag seemed most appropriate.

Targeting of the gay community is done by the far right for the same reason that other vulnerable groups are targeted. Scapegoating minorities is a classic tactic of fascism in its war of position.

With that in mind I was disappointed to have my attention drawn to an article in the Sindo from last month by Eilis O’Hanlon asking What have drag queens got to do with St Patrick?

While rarely agreeing with her I have always admired O'Hanlon's courage for swimming against the tide and unlike some of her colleagues, not resorting to the spoof to beef up her case. Yet, on this one there was no need for her to paddle downstream on the right hand side of the river.

While I think there is always a case that can be made regarding the over-sexualisation of society, feeling that with most things change should be gradual rather than rushed so that in the event of it going pear shaped the brakes will still work, my response was simple.

If they are Irish drag queens, they have as much to do with Patrick's Day any other Irish person. If they are not Irish drag queens they get the traditional welcome that other non Irish citizens get. A Patrick that embraces is much preferable to one that repels.

Out of all the things that pose a serious threat to society, a drag queen is hardly going to storm the Capitol.

Walking With The Rainbow

The coronavirus pandemic may have cast a huge dampener on commemorations to mark St Patrick’s Day tomorrow, but Ireland can hit back by pledging itself to the lasting vision of our Patron Saint - to restore the true Biblical Christian faith to the Emerald Isle, maintains political commentator, Dr John Coulter, in his latest Fearless Flying Column.

Okay, so 2020 may see the quietest public St Paddy’s Day celebrations because of the impact of the coronavirus crisis, but this is no excuse to ignore our Patron Saint’s Christian vision for Ireland - that Ireland can be won for Christ.

But that vision will not be achieved in the churches across the island; it will be won in council chambers, in Leinster House and in the Stormont Chamber.

Christians face a tough political battle if they are to see the true Biblical beliefs of St Patrick have any influence in the Ireland of 2020.

So the key issue is - Wanted: A new legion of St Patrick followers who can rid Ireland of the python politicians who are crushing the heart out of our Emerald Isle!

Where do we find such new saints? Where do we discover people prepared to take a public stand for Biblical Truth? Simple solution, the ordinary people of Ireland become that communal saint!

Heaven knows, given the mess the bankers and politicians have made of this wonderful island, we would need the patience of a saint not to start a violent revolution.

Instead, we need a religious revolution, although critics of Christianity will say Ireland has suffered enough from religion. While many Christians will commemorate the achievements of St Patrick with private prayers, they will also be remembering the persecuted Church across the globe.

But in an increasingly secular Ireland, we should also remember those victims who have been persecuted by the Church.

So everyone Irish must take my St Paddy’s Day Pledge – take politics away from our Patron Saint and put the Bible back into Ireland.

The sad reality is that St Patrick’s Day has become politicised and polarised by republicans, who have rebranded him across the globe as a nationalist, anti-British saint.

This has prompted knee-jerk reactions from Unionists as they try to introduce Orange marches to combat the legions of Irish tricolours on display at parades across the island.

One effect of the coronavirus crisis will be a lack of flags on the streets as parades are called off. Hopefully, this ‘curfew’ will also apply to the notorious Belfast Holy Lands drinking binges which young people get blamed for each year.

The advance of the Godless, secular and pluralist society has also seen a dilution of the real Christian meaning of tomorrow.

St Patrick brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle, not British imperialism or militant republicanism, so get with the programme, Ireland!

Our Patron Saint is credited with the following wisdom: “Christ beside me, Christ before me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.”

The true meaning of St Patrick’s Christian crusade to Ireland has been pulled apart by centuries of sectarian infighting between the religious denominations and the scandals which have rocked the Christian Church on the island like an Old Testament Biblical plague.

The credibility of the Irish Catholic Church has been rocked to the core with all the clerical sexual and physical abuse scandals.

If Jesus and Patrick came back tomorrow, on reading many of the abuse inquiry findings, they would jointly issue the famous Christian maxim – Get thee behind me, satan!

The Protestant community is not far behind as it is split into so many denominations and cliques within churches that it is almost impossible to determine who actually speaks for the so-called Reformed Faith.

Many Protestant churches are locked in wars of words over issues such as forms of worship, translations of the Bible to read, women wearing hats, and men with loud ties with their suits!

Wednesday is my 31st wedding anniversary. Yet I was refused membership of the church I was married in because my wife chooses not to wear a hat to Sunday worship!

So with pervert priests preying on children on one hand, and nutball militant fundamentalists screaming about who is the Anti Christ on the other, is it any wonder Ireland has turned its back on the Biblical principles of Patrick?

The LGBT community, as a minority section of society numerically, has shouted about its beliefs to such an extent that Pride marches are now an annual part of many town and city calendars.

While thousands had wished to be on parade tomorrow to commemorate Patrick as a saint, I wonder how many people would march if there was a Christian Pride event instead? Is St Patrick’s Day becoming like Christmas Day or Easter Sunday – just another commercial event without the true meaning?

If Patrick did come back to look at modern Ireland, he’d probably cry at the spiritual state of the island, and get back on his boat and bog off back to Britain.

But that would be a cry of defeat. Knowing the real spirit of St Patrick, he would stay in Ireland and rid the nation of all the snakes.

What Ireland needs is a set of new spiritual Christian champions to campaign for the Biblical standards which Patrick instilled into the island.

How many young people have been put off joining the priesthood and other holy orders for fear of being branded a paedophile or have their sexual preference questioned?

How many people don’t want to admit they have a strong Christian faith for fear of being branded a Bible-basher or tub-thumper?

Have the antics of Hell fire preachers or judgemental church gossips spoiled it for a generation of new evangelists?

Is a time really coming in Ireland where being a follower of the beliefs of St Patrick will get you banned from a job or refused entrance to a restaurant or school?

As we honour Patrick and consider his legacy tomorrow, as Irish people, let’s take the pledge to continue his spiritual legacy by putting the Bible back into Ireland.
