Gavin Casey ✍ I stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people at Belfast City Hall on Sunday at a protest chaired by a Jewish female. 

I consider Israel to be a genocidal, terrorist, apartheid, war criminal and rogue state with an active Biological WMD program (1 of only 10 rogue states which refuse to sign or ratify the convention) but I did not and do not stand with Hamas. The deliberate targeting of civilians and indiscriminate use of artillery / rockets are wrong in any circumstances; regardless the provocation.

The Hamas act of so-called ‘resistance’ came about because of an apparent ‘intelligence failure’ much-promoted by the media. At the very least there was a gross and criminal dereliction of duty within the Israeli administration. When one considers the decision to permit a music festival within 3 miles of the Gaza blockade in an area with woefully-inadequate defensive-readiness there can be no other conclusion.

The defensive-readiness failings included drone vulnerability, seemingly oblivious to the war in Ukraine; with intelligence-gathering assets left wide open to top attack. That they could conduct drone operations on top of an Israeli installation betrays a total lack of electronic warfare capability. There also appeared to be no Quick Reaction Force readiness in the areas attacked. The lack of readiness is apparently due to a religious festival, according to the media. How would Israeli intelligence and academia not be alert to the significance of the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War when they were attacked on the date of the same religious festival? Was this criminal lack of defensive readiness and public safety by default, as a consequence of corrupt negligence, or something more designed? The decision to permit a music festival three miles from the Gaza blockade in such a security-compromised blockade sector also containing senior officers and an apparent Holocaust survivor is questionable to say the least.

Hamas is a theocratic, patriarchal and socially-retrograde organisation; which suppresses dissent and apparently persecutes the LBGTQ+ community. They deliberately target civilians. They indoctrinate young workers into martyr mindsets and send them to their deaths. They use indiscriminate artillery (rockets) in the same manner as Russia in Ukraine. What Hamas did when they exploited the glaring vulnerabilities was no more 'resistance' than the Omagh or Enniskillen bombs. Deliberate targeting of civilians was wrong in Dresden, Derry and Dublin-Monaghan and it's equally wrong either side of the Palestine conflict. Hostagetaking was as wrong in Patsy Gillespie's house as it is in a Kibbutz. Inhumanity is inhumanity regardless the provocation. There is no moral or strategic capital to be gained from 'returning the serve'; only the perpetuation of trauma, demonisation and genocide.

If our own history teaches us anything Hamas has been significantly-penetrated and compromised by Mossad. Mossad is one of the most sophisticated global intelligence agencies and certainly the most ruthless. It is illogical to believe Mossad doesn't have coercively-controlled assets within Hamas and did not have forewarning. It is also illogical to believe an attack of this size with all its logistical and planning requirements could have gone off with complete operational security. The Egyptian Government has claimed to have passed on warnings. It is also reasonable to expect that Mossad has orchestration and misdirection potential within Hamas and with those with whom they collaborate internationally.

Ukrainian intelligence is apparently claiming Wagner trained Hamas in drone operations. No side will be remiss when it comes to propagandising carnage so such claims, while plausible, require further scrutiny complicated by the liquidation of the Wagner chain of command.

What is absolutely true is the nature of Hamas 'resistance' is unjustifiable violence which in turn results in grossly disproportionate response from Israel. War crime begets war crime and the Palestinian people continue to suffer. Imprisoned and under siege, how much more 'resistance' retribution can they withstand? The people of Palestine need freed from both Israel and Hamas; who appear to me to be little more than a genocide-facilitation vehicle.

War Crime Begets War Crime

Gavin Casey ✍ I spent my early childhood in Lisnahull, Dungannon a few doors away from Paddy Kelly’s house so references to the IRA concern Paddy Kelly’s IRA.

Infiltration and criminalization have always held back the Republican struggle. Perhaps the most-stark example is in the criminal Free State where Fascist reactionaries directed the extra-judicial murders of former comrades.

Britain’s Kitsonian kitbag contained and inspired much of the ‘social engineering’ and ‘conflict management’ strategies which would be deployed against the 6 Counties when social unrest made the statelet ungovernable. Britain knew it was easier to control armed militancy than feet on the streets and with that in mind sent king Charles’ own Parachute Regiment into Ballymurphy and Derry. The result was a polarizing and traumatizing nightmare from which we have yet to awaken.

With all the resources at its disposal the IRA proved to have limited immunity from infiltration. The fates of Caroline Moreland and Freddie Scappaticci starkly contrast. The nature of armed militancy provided Britain with both a liquidation mechanism and a means with which to exert if not assume control.

Criminalization, Ulsterisation, Normalization was a prison policy with the entire captive audience in mind and it hasn’t gone away you know. Modern attempts to recreate the IRA are doomed to failure before they start. Armed militancy provided the mechanism for the catastrophic misdirection at Omagh. Forces so easily misled should not be putting public safety at such peril and yet there are those who persist.

You would think the catastrophe of the Omagh bomb would resonate with those planning armed actions but all Tyrone roads lead back to Omagh and more specifically Beragh it would appear. Ronan Kerr was from Beragh and he suffered a particularly public and gruesome death. The ‘propaganda’ result was universal condemnation, a well-observed minute’s silence at Tyrone’s next match and both Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte and Tyrone Captain Brian Dooher acting as pall bearers at Ronan Kerr’s funeral. John Caldwell is from Beragh as are the McClean family members whom the state accuse of involvement in Caldwell’s attempted murder.

The charges over the Caldwell attack suggest an overlap between what Saoradh reportedly described as ‘republican revolutionaries’ and a criminal drug gang. Considering the criminal degeneracy in the history of The Workers Party it’s certainly possible that so-called ‘republican revolutionaries’ could have been demoralized to such an extent.

And then there came a bizarre threat apparently from a relatively anonymous ‘organisation’ styling itself ‘Arm Na Poblachta’. They apparently consider the families of crown forces personnel to be ‘legitimate targets’. I’m unaware of any statement disputing what sounds like something Billy Wright would have come out with.

The persistence with failed tactics by armed militants provides a managed ‘dissident threat’ which is the media-massaged pretext for the 12 ½ thousand strong and growing Loyalist paramilitary membership. The real recruitment motivator is more likely the license to commit crime that comes with dues payment.

The obvious impotence and apparent degeneracy of contemporary physical force Republicanism is as glaring an argument as is needed. Those involved should cease and desist as there is no moral or strategic justification for the persistence of failure. Given the lack of justification one must question the character and motivation of those who persist.

The IRA was a dynamic force world-renowned for their ingenuity and improvisation and they still failed in a war against insurmountable odds. ‘Tribute acts’ a miniscule fraction of the IRA’s size and organizational capacity are exponentially more-corruptible as a result. There is irrefutable evidence that armed groups are involved in ‘criminal mediation’ described as ‘de-escalation’ of disputes between criminals but this is in effect facilitation of organized crime which will sully all participants.

None of the tribute acts have shown a capacity for ingenuity or improvisation that in any way compares with that of the IRA. They increasingly appear to be victims rather than exploiters of technology, wedded to failed 20th Century tactics.

Contemporary opportunities to enhance operational technology have not been lost on Loyalists it would appear. The much-publicised presence of convicted terrorist Clifford Peoples in Ukraine attests to that. I don’t fear a future Loyalist terror campaign on the level of the 1990s. Freely-available, contemporary technology will ensure there are no untouchable war lords in urban fiefdoms. Mutually-assured destruction will hopefully deter mass-murder proponents.

Time and demographics are on the side of those who strive for Irish unity. Unpopular and unjustifiable acts of violence can only serve to temporarily stem the tide. Firebombing toyshops in the mouth of Xmas or shooting people in front of crowds of children cannot by any measure be considered propaganda-positive actions. The individual behind the firebombs was apparently exposed as an agent provocateur but how much of the activity logs of tribute acts looks like anything different.

There is no place for armed tribute acts or legacy organizations in the current socio-political-strategic climate. The conditions for offensive operations do not exist nor will they. Advances in surveillance methods and equipment only increase the stupidity of persistence in failure. It is obvious from their actions that none of the tribute acts have people of the intellect and ingenuity found in the IRA’s technical departments. Those type of people exist in the wider community across all generations and many will step up in future should the need arise. One can only hope such an escalation never happens.

No Place For Armed Tribute Acts

Gavin Casey ✍ The Opel Blitz was the logistical backbone of German military mobilised logistics in WW2.

All Blitz trucks were built by General Motors, who bought Opel in 1929. Ford built numerous factories in Germany and by 1939 Ford and General Motors subsidiaries accounted for 70% of German domestic car sales. Ford profited from forced slave labour before it was required by Nazi law and up until America entered the war. Ford factories were retooled for war production at the onset of WW2. GM / Opel made tank and aircraft parts as well as a range of Blitz trucks during the war. Henry Ford actually sought post- war compensation for damage to his German factories from allied bombing. Ford along with IBM and others are on a list of 500 companies connected to Auschwitz. I am aware of no effort made by Ford or GM to compensate those who survived slave labour in their factories.

Putin spoke recently of the west enabling the German invasion of Russia in WW2 and he wasn’t wrong. But he was wrong to invade Ukraine; ill-prepared and ill-advised. The bestial nature of his war-making is utterly abhorrent. There appears to be evidence of a very selective type of mobilisation which targets those socially least-desirable to the regime and the fighting-age men of ethnic regions kept in thrall. Coupled with the Wagner convict-liquidation-system, the result is terrified men herded to their deaths by merciless pressure squads out of the NKVD handbook. A tragicomic re-enactment of the opening scene of ‘Enemy At The Gates’. To experience the despair in the intercepted phone conversations between mobilised Russians and their families is most unsettling.

The Ukrainians have readily-adopted NATO doctrine, which has proven reliable in the face of an enemy reduced to early 20th Century tactics. They have thoroughly exposed the logistical, doctrinal and organisational limitations of the Russian war machine. There are apparently few limitations on their use of inventory; I’ve seen multiple clips of Anti-tank-guided-missiles costing €10s of thousands being fired at buildings where precision artillery or mortars would have been more expedient.

Amid talk of a ‘shell shortage’ in terms of Soviet era munitions it appears nations in Africa and beyond are being approached for business. Russia has used 152mm shells for their main artillery pieces since WW1 whereas NATO uses 155mm. The NATO Military Industrial Complex (MIC) will eagerly eye the inventory vacuum.

Corruption dogs the Ukrainian regime and many officials have been dismissed amid allegations. Pocket-liners corrupt universally. There are also questions arising about the manner in which the Kherson region fell to the Russians with little apparent resistance and failure to blow 3 key bridges when Ukrainian intelligence expected the invasion to begin 2 days earlier.

Ukraine provides a proving ground and showcase for the latest offerings of the NATO MIC. The inventory ‘gifted’ to Ukraine by former Soviet Bloc countries will be replaced with NATO armaments. GM, producer of the ubiquitous NATO GM Humvee and Nazi Opel Blitz, stands to gain significantly from NATO expansion. Former Soviet-Bloc NATO nations are emptying their inventories of Soviet equipment and munitions. Each nation has pledged to spend 2% GDP on defence; Poland has announced they are increasing their spend to 4%.

Competition between NATO MICs was most apparent in terms of tanks. Germany refused to authorise Leopards to Ukraine until America sent Abrams tanks. This was a protective measure as Germany will compete with the USA in multi-nation battle tank rearmament. The Leopard and Abrams derived from a joint development project but the American Abrams is a worse tank than the Leopard in terms of this theatre due to excess weight and logistical footprint. Germany ensured a ‘try before you buy’ took place. Britain is not a serious competitor in terms of tanks but their 14 ‘gifted’ Challenger 2s will put a good hole in their tank shell inventory. The Challenger 2 has a rifled barrel unlike other NATO tanks so has unique ammunition which will be obsolete when Britain upgrades to the Challenger 3 with a standard barrel.

Two of the most eagerly-awaited items on the way to Ukraine are Sweden’s Bofors Archer artillery system and Combat Vehicle 90. Bofors are now owned by British BAE. BAE also make the turret of the Polish Krab artillery system and the aforementioned Challenger 2 and undoubtedly much more. Britain’s MIC is well represented in vehicles and munitions in Ukraine so It’s not hard to see why Britain is such a self-declared ‘willing partner’ with Ukraine. Britain’s MIC conjures images of Iraqi ‘supergun’ scandals, Middle East bribery scandals and the wretched fate of Stephen Milligan MP. I would not be surprised if perfidious machinations had a significant hand in conflict escalation. There are after all several centuries of history to consider. What is unquestionable fact is Britain provided the false pretext for the invasion of Iraq and now reaps the ‘rewards’ of carnage in Ukraine.

I truly feel for the unfortunate people of Ukraine caught in the crossfire of conflicting oligarchies and the Russian people whose lives are apparently so far beneath the contempt of their tzar. And I have little expectation NATO MICs will wish the sun to set on such a hay-making season any time soon.

The War In Ukraine As I See It

Gavin Casey ðŸ”– I attended a book launch for John Crawley’s The Yank, in Coalisland last night. 

I was running late but was to be in no danger of missing the start due to the volume of people getting books signed and posing for pictures with the author.

The event commenced with John reading an excerpt from the book which began with him in exhausted sleep aboard the Marita Ann and ended with him wide awake, in a Garda vehicle, enroute to the Bridewell in Cork. I found this passage from the book to be both compelling and well-written.

There then followed an extensive question and answer session where John fielded a range of questions from a crowd of over one hundred people from across Tyrone and beyond. A number of the questions appeared to carry the insight of experience and the manner of response made for a rewarding and educational experience. The level of honesty and integrity on display was a welcome change from the usual evasive and self-serving behavior of elected, so-called, representatives.

The inevitable Jim Bulger question arose and I have no reason to doubt John’s assertion of unknowing in regard to the true nature of Whitey. I worked in a South Boston bar with the sister of two of Bulger’s victims and I knew many people who had associations with him. The legend of Whitey Bulger was part of the Federal and State narratives. Bulger was a protected FBI asset and his brother Billy was the President of the Massachusetts Senate, before and long after John Crawley interacted with him. Bulger’s true nature would not be revealed until 1999 when two of his accomplices became cooperating witnesses. To retroactively expect John Crawley to uniquely have been able to see through Bulger’s carefully-maintained persona is ludicrous in my opinion.

The evening concluded with further book signing and photographs with the author. I managed to get a quick conversation with John but unfortunately too brief given the demands on his time.

Honesty And Integrity On Display

Gavin Casey ✒ I encountered an entity online recently who described the LGBTQ community as a ‘cult’. 

They would go on to describe the ‘Fascist’ nature of said humans’ campaign for the same basic human rights which should be afforded to all. When ‘how god made’ them and ‘nature’ entered into the opposing ‘argument’ I realised there would be more point debating with one of the bullocks in my Da’s cattle shed.

I reject the idea of god but I’ve a degree in Biochemistry so I think I’ve gained something of an understanding of nature. Bigots routinely describe LGBTQ as a 'lifestyle choice' when for the most part it's a natural consequence of genetic makeup. As such LGBTQ people are no more abnormal or unnatural than blue-eyed or brown-haired people. To describe their community as a 'cult' is no different to describing brown eyed people as a cult, in my opinion.

Fundamentally, everything exhibits in spectrums. We learn about the atomic spectrum in school whereby atoms can be identified by the characteristic energy patterns of electrons. Indeed, many contributors to or readers of this site may well have become uncomfortably aware of the application of this science; particularly in the case of electron microscopes in forensic science.

Bill Hicks described reality perfectly, in my opinion, when he said: “All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration.”

The autism spectrum is something most people are familiar with - everyone is on it to a greater or lesser degree. But this is also the case with every spectrum and all natural characteristics exhibit as spectrums; hair colour, height, voice, intelligence and sexuality to name but a few. The list is all-encompassing in my perspective.

So, considering sexuality, everyone is somewhere on the spectrum on the basis of their genetic makeup. Some people are naturally, totally heterosexual while others are naturally totally homosexual. But it’s not a yes / no binary situation as many people are on the spectrum somewhere in between.

The same is true for sexual identity in that one's sex is determined by the XY chromosomes where XX is female and XY is male but it’s not that simple. Chromosomal pairing is the result of complex biochemical interactions and often this, naturally, results in pairings which are not as clearly defined. Trans people are people, no different to anyone else and equally deserving of the same human rights.

In conclusion, in my view, LGBTQ people are people born with natural human characteristics no different to hair, skin or eye colour. Progressive humans reject doctrines and ideas which discriminate against people on the basis of skin colour because such discrimination is a crime against nature and humanity. Sexual preference and identification is no different.

Sexual Discrimination Is A Crime Against Nature

Gavin Casey ✚ The American extreme right and religious entertainers use the term ‘woke’ as a weapon for pretty-much anything that goes against their agenda; which is obviously the same agenda as the few with the most wealth. 

In a recent example Politician Matt Gaetz shrieked about a future US military too woke to fight! This is a man currently under investigation for criminal sexual activity involving minors, to which a close personal friend and political ally has already pled guilty.
 
Events in Ukraine reveal a paradigm shift in warfare which suggests the soldiers of the future will increasingly resemble video gamers. But imagine a world in which the kids were ‘too woke’ to fight. Such a world would be one in which the kids treated others as they themselves wished to be treated, a world without prejudice or discrimination.

Such a world seems far removed from the one we currently experience. And, as ever, the most-deplorable fake-Christians are the loudest voices against any progress towards it. We’ve seen it in Ireland and gaze in horrified wonder at the brazenness of the Christo-grift in the American right wing and right wing in general.

I was taught GCSE religion in the late ‘80s by a Civil Rights veteran from the perspective of Jesus the revolutionary. There was much focus on the social aspect of the gospel stories and the political nature of the Jesus stories concerning clashes with the Pharisees and Sadducees. We were taught Jesus challenged them for being obsessed with the ‘letter of the law’ to the detriment of the ‘spirit of the law’. Ironically this accurately describes much of what passes for Christianity in today’s world.

Looking at the Jesus stories in the overall context of ancient religions suggests an amalgam of multiple Messiah figures with similar biographical details and core message – ‘treat people as people not things’. History is replete with examples of people who had a ‘eureka’ moment or awakening. Some are remembered for their contribution to human progress and others were put to death. The week that’s in it, some people remember a man who may have lived and been nailed to a cross and a real man who was tied to a chair and shot.

Demystified the Jesus story is the ultimate woke agenda and illustration of the extents to which those in power will go to control the agenda and prevent a wider awakening. The associated repression skews the character of the inevitable resistance and agents of disinformation will divide, distort and demonise. The result is the bipolar complication of a simple, ‘be decent’, philosophy. 

It was ever thus.

TPQ: What are you currently reading?

GC 🕮 Midnight At Chernobyl which was a gift from my daughter. 

TPQ: Best and worst books you have ever read? 

GC 🕮 Best – David Beresford’s Ten Men Dead. I first read that at 13 and was amazed that an English journalist could show such impartiality and even admiration when he described the life of Francis Hughes. Worst – Some Tom Clancy shite about Al Qaeda hooking up with the Mexican cartels to smuggle heroin and operatives into America. I read the Jack Ryan canon in my youth and loved the technical know how and complexity but this was pure ‘phone it in drivel’. 

TPQ: Book most cherished as a child? 

GC 🕮 I started reading Dan Breen’s My Fight For Irish Freedom when I was 7 or 8. When I came to a word I couldn’t make out I would guess it and one day my granny got me to read from the book and corrected me when I said ‘Royal Irish Constabrits’. I’ve read it many times since. When I was 15 or 16 I went exploring in the derelict house to my cousin's. In the kitchen press I found a copy of the book signed by Vol Dan McAnallen. I gave it to a local contemporary of Dan’s who was amazed as he said Dan was seriously inspired by it and would quote from it regularly. I saved it from mouldering away but regret that I didn’t give it to Dan’s brother whom I didn’t really know at the time. 

TPQ: Favourite Childhood author? 

GC ðŸ•® Walter Mackin. We had the same teacher for English from 1st year to GCSE and we never did any Shakespeare. We did The Silent People as our main English literature book as well as Graham Greene’s The Power And The Glory and for plays we did Playboy Of The Western World ðŸ“– The Plough And The Stars and Juno And The Paycock. Our teacher was a sound man who I didn’t appreciate at the time as I sneered at his abhorrence of violence. But he still leant me all his Walter Mackin books and I thoroughly enjoyed them. 

TPQ: First book to really own you? 

GC ðŸ•® Ten Men Dead. I read One Day In My Life at 10 or 11 and other books that were in the house like The RUC Black And Blue Book, co-written by my headmaster Denis Faul. I had an elderly grandaunt who was partially sighted, had never married and retired home from abroad. She took me on a Rhine cruise from Holland to Germany and back as a guide cub. It was organised by Downtown Radio and there were some looks when 13 year old me appeared with the group in the airport with my just-bought copy of the book. The first few days on the boat were non-stop sailing through flat; featureless terrain and the people were almost all retirees. Our every meal was at the same table with 3 female, Harland & Wolfe retirees. I became utterly absorbed in the book and had it finished by the time we reached the more topographically-appealing German mountains. 


TPQ: Favourite male and female author? 

GC ðŸ•® Male author – The sadly-missed Terry Pratchett. I discovered him in my teens and wish I was reading him still. A sublimely-talented commentator on humanity. Female author – Morgan Lewellyn; Irish-American writer of historical Irish fiction. 

TPQ: A preference for fact or fiction? 

GC ðŸ•® I like historical material so the line is blurred. The accepted logic is the Celts wrote nothing down. This is based on the ‘facts’ of Roman-derived history. Archaeology has proven and reason suggests otherwise. A society with social values not replicated until the 20th century had to have had millennia of reasoning and philosophy. No wonder their literary legacy was so vigorously purged. 

TPQ: Any author or book you point blank refuse to read?

GC ðŸ•® Have to admit I fuckin loved Cage 11 as a kid but tried to read some of the latter canon a decade ago or so. Sin é agus sin mar a fuck no Gerry. 

TPQ: Last book you gave as a present? 

GC ðŸ•® Can't recall ever buying a book as a gift for someone but have lent many books which essentially became presents. 

TPQ: Biography, autobiography or memoir that most impressed you? 

GC ðŸ•® Can’t remember the title but it was a biography of Claus Von Stauffenberg I read in my late teens. 


TPQ: A book to share with somebody so that they would more fully understand you? 

GC ðŸ•® The Illuminatus Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.

TPQ: Book you would most like to see turned into a movie? 

GC ðŸ•® Anything from the CJ Sansom ‘Shardlake’ series. Serious historical fiction. 

TPQ: The just must - select one book you simply have to read before you close the last page on life.

Booker's Dozen @ Gavin Casey

Gavin Casey ✒ I used to drive the Battleford Road out of Armagh regularly on a Sunday morning but today was the first time in years. 

I was unsurprised to encounter a group of road bowling enthusiasts where you would normally find them. There was a car in front of me so I took advantage of the space cleared for it and could pass through without much loss of momentum. I’d have been doing about 40 where you’d normally be doing 60. From the driver’s side of the road came slow down gestures and comments. 

This type of thing tends to have a triggering effect, almost as bad as the auld boys and young goddermen strolling down the middle of the road, backs to oncoming traffic, engrossed in conversation. They put up wee signs for drivers, ‘Caution Road Bowling’ and many appear to believe this absolves them from any caution regards moving vehicles. 

“It’s a traditional pastime done here for generations” the enthusiasts might say. So was triumphalist Orange marching through Nationalist areas but that irresponsible and dangerous activity has largely been curtailed despite the enthusiasts’ sense of entitlement. 

I personally believe road bowling on busy major roads is an irresponsible activity which endangers the lives of enthusiasts and road users alike. I don’t understand why it’s tolerated without any type of reasonable health and safety measures. There was road bowling in Boston among Armagh and Cork people; but it was done safely, in controlled environments, off the public roads. I think that should be the way here too. Busy roads are not the place for groups of pedestrians milling about with little concern for road safety and expecting others, operating machinery, to assume the responsibility on their behalf.
