There is something rotten in the soul of a society when it looks at an empty pub and worries more about the taps than the man who owns them.

For four years, The Waterside has sat idle, and now the familiar chorus begins again: "Someone should get Conor McGregor to reopen it." As though the greatest crisis facing this community is the absence of overpriced pints and celebrity selfies.

Have we learned nothing? This is a man whom an Irish High Court jury found liable for raping Nikita Hand, awarding her substantial damages after hearing weeks of evidence. During that trial, the court heard harrowing medical evidence, including that Ms Hand required the surgical removal of a tampon lodged inside her body following the assault. The jury listened. They weighed the evidence. They reached their conclusion.

Yet somehow, for some people, the only lingering question is whether he'll pull a decent pint. That should shame us.

Communities are defined not by who has the deepest pockets, but by who we choose to welcome through the front door. Every invitation extended to McGregor sends another message to survivors of sexual violence: that wealth, celebrity and notoriety can outweigh accountability. That if you're famous enough, eventually people stop talking about what you've done and start talking about your business ventures instead.

We should be asking ourselves a different question. What message does it send to every woman in this town if the answer to an abandoned building is to roll out the red carpet for a man found liable for rape?

Across Ireland, women's refuges, rape crisis centres and frontline support organisations spend every day helping survivors rebuild lives shattered by violence. Their staff and volunteers carry burdens most of us cannot imagine. They believe victims when others do not. They offer shelter, counselling, legal support and dignity.

Those are the people deserving of our admiration.

Those are the people we should be backing.

Not a man whose public persona has become a grotesque monument to aggression, domination and the kind of performative masculinity that mistakes intimidation for strength.

Strength is not shouting louder than everyone else.

Strength is not throwing punches at an elderly man sitting on a bar stool.

Strength is not building an identity around fear, excess and the cult of the untouchable alpha male.

Real strength is found in the women who walk into a refuge with nothing but the clothes on their backs. It is found in survivors who tell their stories despite knowing they will be attacked, doubted and ridiculed. It is found in the workers who answer crisis calls at three o'clock in the morning because someone, somewhere, has nowhere else to turn.

That is courage.

The mythology surrounding McGregor has always depended on confusing violence with virtue. Too many have mistaken swagger for leadership, notoriety for achievement, and spectacle for substance. But communities should aspire to something better than celebrity worship.

An empty pub is an inconvenience.

A culture that excuses violence against women is a catastrophe.

If The Waterside is destined to stand empty for another four years, then so be it. Empty buildings can be restored. Broken trust is far harder to rebuild. A community that welcomes a man found liable by an Irish High Court jury for raping Nikita Hand tells every survivor that commerce matters more than conscience, that celebrity outweighs accountability, and that enough money can buy a second chance before justice has even had time to settle.

We should be better than that. Let The Waterside wait. Let someone with integrity breathe life back into its walls. Our community deserves more than another shrine to ego, and every woman who has ever feared, endured or survived violence deserves to know that when we are forced to choose between profit and principle, we will choose principle every single time.

Not Every Empty Building Deserves Its Owner Back

Caoimhin O’Muraile ☭ Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste, Simon Harris, were in Washington for the annual Saint Patricks celebrations (piss up) and the traditional handing over the bowl of Shamrock to the US President.

This year was somewhat different from all previous years because this particular President, Donald Trump, cares less about Ireland, her culture, and the situation in the six counties than most of his predecessors. Yes, he went through the niceties of pretending to accept graciously the bowl of Shamrock in much the same way as did Joe Biden (who thinks he’s Irish) last year when he was President but the gesture clearly lacked the sincerity of Biden and Obama before him or even George W. Bush in the early 2000s.

Trump was obviously, to anybody who watched the ceremony, going through the motions and not over convincingly either. This ceremony or farce took place a couple of days before the main event on 17th March, Saint-Patricks-day, when it is traditional for the President to invite the Irish Taoiseach and Tanaiste to the White House as guests of honour. This year Trump decided to invite, as his guest, former Mixed Martial Arts fighter Conor McGregor, claiming Mr McGregor to be his “favourite Irishman” which was a bit of a kick in the teeth for the 26 Counties political leaders! White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed; “the administration could not think of a better guest to have with us on St. Patricks Day”. Little wonder she gave this description as both Trump and McGregor are convicted felons!

McGregor entered the scene with a shout of “happy Saint Patricks Day America” before he went on stage in his usual flamboyant manner showing off as he once did before an MMA fight. He then went into a tirade of attacks on the 26 county governments policies on immigration and lack of concern for the Irish People shown by this administration. He claimed; “Ireland and America are siblings” and went on to say; “the United States will look after its little brother”, meaning Donald Trump will look after Irish racists whose policies the President in many respects shares. His condemnation of the 26 County States Government went on to say; “issues the people of Ireland face the Irish Government has long since abandoned the people of Ireland”. He continued with this tirade of racist rubbish which, alas, many political illiterates will agree with: “The illegal immigration racket is running ravage around the country, Ireland is losing its Irishness”.

These comments and attacks on the official political representatives of the Irish people must have been music to the ears of President Donald Trump who himself hates people of different cultures including, if he’s honest, the ‘Irish undocumented’.

The irony is the USA including its President are a nation of immigrants. They are from all corners of the globe from China to Europe including Ireland and Trump himself has Scottish roots. Yet, here we have a political illiterate condemning immigration into Ireland when the people he was addressing were, every one of them, immigrants at some point in their history. In fact in Ireland the Celts were not the indigenous people of the country. No, they came from central Europe when the Germanic tribes from the north displaced them. The truth is, and this applies to any country on earth, none of us can claim not to descend from people who came from somewhere else and this includes Ireland. For example, in 1171, King Henry II through a charter granted Dublin to his “men of Bristol”. The charter stated it was for ‘Bristolians to colonise the city’ and many of them did as people from Bristol came to Dublin. This means today, many Dubliners, including possibly Conor McGregor, may be by ancestry Bristolians. if this were to be the case which football team Conor, Bristol City or Bristol Rovers? Many of the original Anglo/Norman colonisers (not to be mistaken with the Tudor colonisers of 16th and 17th centuries) became known as ‘the Old English’ and these people intermarried with the native Irish adopting Irish customs and clothing and having families which were ‘more Irish than the Irish’. This led to the ‘Statute of Kilkenny 1366’ but I’m deviating from the topic under discussion. The comments made by the former MMA fighter may have appealed to the older generation of Irish Americans who cling on to Eamon de Valera’s view of a Gaelic Catholic Ireland steeped in religious beliefs, practices and superstitions but modern Ireland is multi-cultural and has many different races and ethnicities in its population.

The Irish Tanaiste, (simple) Simon Harris, one of those who should have been a guest of the President along with Taoiseach, Micheal Martin, on Saint Patricks Day, stated; “Conor McGregor does not represent Ireland” and continued; “the President can invite whoever he likes to his home” which was a diplomatic way of pretending he was not feeling humiliated. Nice try, Simon, but through that brave face you posed the reality could not be hidden. It would appear this US President has a fetish almost about humiliating other world leaders particularly those from smaller countries like the Ukraine and now, it appears, Ireland. He humiliated Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, publicly on world television a couple of weeks back and now, in a less obvious way, Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste Simon Harris. Perhaps you should not have gone lads after all you knew Trump can’t stand your policies! Ireland “you have a target on your back” Trump recently commented!

There is an old adage, ‘do not put your shovel where there is no shit.’ Martin and Harris would claim they were looking after Irish investments and Irish jobs, people employed by US companies in the 26 Counties. Also the millions of Irish ‘undocumented’ (illegal immigrants) in the USA, the same kind of people McGregor was condemning for being in Ireland - what hypocrisy! Another point of observation, the 26 County administration claim to support and recognise the state of Palestine. If this is genuinely the case what were the two leading lights of this administration doing licking the arse of Israel's largest arms supplier? Arms used to bomb the crap out of Gaza and Trump has pledged more arms for Israel to carry out more attacks on defenceless Palestinian women and children, a slight contradiction perhaps on behalf of the Irish leaders? He also wishes to colonise Gaza, making it a ‘US Riviera’ thus kicking out millions of Palestinians forever. Micheal Martin also claims he is defending jobs in Ireland of those employed by US business in the 26 County state who, Mr Martin would have us believe, may relocate in another country if he does not court the US President. This is, of course, nonsense as the low corporation tax, weak or non-existent trade unions, and a low paid yet highly educated workforce amassing huge profits for these US firms are the factors which dictate where these TNCs (Transnational Corporations) will locate irrespective of what Donald Trump says or doesn’t say. Business in the capitalist world is bigger than any world political leader.

Harris has recently spoke of “mutual respect” between the United Sates and “Ireland” which from where I’m sitting amounts to the 26-county administration showing the Trump government a grovelling lick arsing respect and Trump showing nothing but contempt in return. Mutual respect between any two countries must be a two-way street and this is very much a one-way avenue. Harris was referring to the Tariffs which Trump is threatening the European Union with and which the 26-county state are part of. Harris is giving the impression the present administration can do a separate deal outside the EU which, to my knowledge, they cannot!

Trump and McGregor share more than an agreement of far-right politics. They both have records for sex offences! ‘McGregor’s visit to the White House came months after he was found civilly liable in a High Court damages case in Dublin taken by a woman who accused him of rape. Nikita Hand, also known as Nikita Ni Laimhin, won her claim against McGregor after accusing the professional MMA fighter of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018. Ms Hand, 35, was awarded damages and costs after a three-week trial last year in which the jury found him civilly liable for assault. A judge at the High Court in Dublin later said that the jury had conclusively determined that McGregor had raped Ms Hand’ (Irish Daily Mirror 18th March 2025). As can be gleaned by this quote Conor McGregor was lucky the case was a civil and not criminal trial thus allowing him to escape jail and being put on a sex offenders register. Ms Hand was awarded €248,000 for her ordeal at the hands of the former MMA fighter, payable by McGregor.

President Trump himself is no stranger to allegations of sexual misconduct and before his 2016 election tapes were produced on which Trump said; “they love it” referring to women being touched uninvited in sensitive places. In July 2006 Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Gregory Clifford), an American pornographic film star, met the future presidential hopeful at a celebrity golf tournament. Under oath Daniels said; “she was invited to dinner and to meet him at his hotel room”. Daniels testified that “Trump asked her many questions about her life”, and at some point, she told him she had “grown up poor”. She eventually used the bathroom in his hotel room, but on re-emerging “was surprised to find Trump stripped to his underwear sitting on the bed”. Obviously, Trump had more than dinner in mind and Daniels testified saying “I think we should go and moved towards the door” but Trump allegedly stood in her way saying in part, “this is the only way you’re getting out of the trailer park.” Apparently, they then had sex but Daniels said; “it wasn’t something I wanted.” Perhaps Trump has difficulty telling the difference between adult entertainment fantasy films and real life. Just because Stormy Daniels performs sexual gymnastics with different men in her pornographic films does not necessarily mean she does so in real life!

It must be wondered what the content of private conversation between ‘Don and Con’ was? Could the two sexual predators have discussed their conquests and bedroom antics, after they had sorted out the immigration problems as they see it? Well, there is an old saying, ‘birds of a feather flock together’ and this is certainly the case when speaking of Donald Trump and Conor McGregor! From a political point of view and after the protocol of Saint Patrick's week was out of the way it is clear the US President would rather have spent the 17th March in the company of a fellow alleged sex predator than with the political leaders of the 26 County Irish state!

What happened on 17th March 2025 was a deliberate rebuke of the 26 County administration by the White House with Conor McGregor receiving more coverage than Micheal Martin or Simon Harris. McGregor conducted what amounted to his own press conference in which he attacked the 26 County Government's policies. It was a humiliation for Mr Martin and Mr Harris who, love or loath their policies, are the political leaders of the 26 Counties. It was typical of Trump's far-right political agenda and McGregor fitted the bill perfectly.

Donald Trump Prefers Fellow Felon To Micheal Martin and Simon Harris

Gearóid Ó Loingsigh ☭ writing in Substack on 29-November-2024.

Conor McGregor was found by a jury of his peers, fortunately in the legal sense only, of having raped Nikita Hand and she was awarded €250,000. I say his peers in the legal sense as McGregor’s real peers are people like Andrew Tate, tweeting from Romania in support of him. Fortunately, twelve honest men and women were his legal peers and came to a just decision.

The court decision has led to a slew of companies deserting him and trying to put distance between them and him and any product he is associated with, even if he doesn’t actually own it. What took them so long? The rape was reported in the media at the time. I have argued elsewhere against #Me Too style trials and in favour of due process. But there were lots of opportunities to break with McGregor’s toxic brand long before Nikita Hand took him on, on her own. She received no support from the virtuous companies now abandoning him, nor the media and not even that much support from feminist groups.

He was lauded and feted by the media, given an indulgent interview by Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show, whilst all the time he came out with the racist comments about dancing monkeys, telling Floyd Mayweather “Dance for me, boy” and saying he would love to turn José Aldo’s favela into a Reebok sweatshop.[1] But the great and good in Irish society would brook no criticism and Tubridy even called him the Irish Muhammad Ali. Ali was witty, quick and sharp tongued, funny and thoughtful and a supporter of progressive causes. McGregor was a mouth, a thug and as sharp as a bowl of jelly who lent his support to race riots with his “We are at war tweet”.[2]

He was fined a miserly €1,000 in 2019 for the assault of an elderly man in a pub he owned who had refused a glass of whiskey from him.[3] The video is available here . Following the assault, an Irish bar in Florida in a video that went viral filmed themselves pouring his whiskey down the toilet.[4] Why did the virtuous not do the same at the time? The answer is simple. There was still a lot of money to be made from the McGregor brand. It wasn’t an isolated incident either. McGregor has repeatedly shown himself to be little more than a thug who is handy with his fists in a lucrative professional setting and also outside of it. There have been a string of incidents, assaults, racial abuse and even one involving whiskey where he pushed a glass of his own brand whiskey into Khabib Nurmagomedov’s face, and called him a “backwards cunt” when he politely refused. As the Turkish proverb goes “When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace becomes a circus.”

Why wasn’t Proper No. 12 taken off the shelves then? Money is the simple reason and his brand wasn’t quite yet toxic enough for these people. There are other questions to be asked about the virtuous in this case. Lisa Hand has been lauded now for her courageous battle against a powerful, wealthy man who had the Irish establishment and media in thrall to him. I have written about #Me Too style public convictions before and the lack of any due process. I described it as a middle and upper class movement that had absolutely no regard for working class women.[5] Many of the allegations against Hollywood moguls have over the course of time been proven, others have not. At the time some of the #Me Too campaigners claimed they stood for all women. Oprah Winfrey even claimed at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards that she and #Me Too stood by working class women.[6] Yet we were expected to believe that monsters such as Harvey Weinstein and others had never abused their domestic staff. They were never mentioned. Two years previously black working-class women in Baltimore had won a civil case against the city for the sexual acts that city employees demanded from women in exchange for repairs to social housing.[7] Neither Oprah nor #Me Too mentioned them, ever.

People were entitled to keep their silence over the rape allegations at the time. It would have been prudent. However, when the Director of Public Prosecutions refused to take a criminal case against McGregor it was an opportune moment to speak out. Feminists often point out correctly that most rape victims never get their day in court. So why wasn’t this an issue? Nikita Hand, like the working-class women of Baltimore, got her day in civil court due to her own determination, tenacity and courage. She won. No thanks to the virtuous running from the McGregor sinking ship. Hopefully, that ship will sink, never to float again. But history says otherwise. Mike Tyson recovered from his time in jail for rape. His victim did not.

It would have been better if all the virtuous had turned their backs on McGregor a long time ago. It would have been better if he had actually done time for his assaults. It would have been better if he had been charged for his We are at war comments on the racist riots in Dublin. Maybe a few salutary lessons in time would have taught McGregor that he could not do what he wanted and get away with it. But he did get away with it. The virtuous let him, enabled him, even encouraged him. Only Nikita Hand put a stop to his gallop and may his cocky gait remain a crawl forever more.

Conor McGregor And The Flight Of The Virtuous

Matt Treacy ✒ Former world UFC Champion Conor McGregor has tweeted support for the people of East Wall who are continuing to protest against the placing of a migrant accommodation centre in the area.

I stand with the people of East Wall. And no I do not want to be a politician. Just that they have to answer to me. https://t.co/AGHSBrrrPi

His declaration of support for his fellow Dubs has garnered a considerable, and climbing, number of likes and the many comments on the post are overwhelmingly supportive. One of the responses led to his informally throwing his hat into the ring as a possible successor to President Michael D. Higgins who must depart Áras an Uachtaráin in 2025 unless the NGOs stage a coup and reinstall him as President for life.

Having cast my eye on any of the other likely contenders, if the bould Conor does manage to secure a nomination, and his support for East Wall will not have boosted his chances within the Party – apologies, the parties because of course they all differ fundamentally on, em,…. – then he may have the tentative vote of growing numbers of people who feel increasingly unrepresented by their TDs.

I’d fancy my chances of correcting that. https://t.co/oTqQJQPWss

Meanwhile the protests have continued, with another successful blockade of the Port tunnel having taken place on Friday evening during rush hour traffic, against leading to considerable traffic disruption across the city centre and approaches.

The resilience of the protestors over the past weeks has led to evident unease among the political establishment.

This week a report in the Phoenix which regularly publishes stories that seem to reflect the internal views of senior Sinn Féin figures commented on the fact that some of the party’s “less sophisticated support base … may be susceptible to crude nationalism.” Pretty pathetic given where Sinn Féin are coming from historically, but reflective of the disjunct between the left liberal staffers and leadership and many of their traditional voters in Dublin and elsewhere.

Meanwhile, one of the participants in the East Wall protests has challenged Conor McGregor to put his money where his mouth is.

Well if u stand with us here in East Wall come down and stand with us on the cold night's on the streets

Conor McGregor Stands With East Wall As Protests Continue

Prior to the Conor McGregor-Donald Cerrone fight Daithi O’Donnabhain set out his stall in relation to McGregor, a fighter he had long admired. Its publication was delayed due to a miscommunication.

On January 18th Irish MMA star Conor McGregor returns against Donald Cerrone in a 170lb bout at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, for UFC 246.

Its his first fight since the utter debacle that ensued in and out of the octagon after his 155lb title fight against current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, in October 2018, where he was unable to withstand the barrage unleashed by his opponent and tapped out in the fourth round. Khabib hadn't exacted enough punishment as he felt Conor and his team deserved so carried on the fight by vaulting the cage into McGregors cornermen, which then spread the violence out into the crowd. Irish fans were unprepared as gangs of Muslims hunted them down on the Las Vegas strip, setting upon them mercilessly, and then filming their splayed out victims to commemorate the total national humiliation inflicted on us.

The Irish newspapers naturally sensed an opportunity to complete the destruction of a person they never accepted and thus they could barely conceal their glee at the loss, according to one porcine contributor:

"...He's no elite sportsman and now he has got his comeuppance. He was humiliated..."

One ‘never-was’ thought it appropriate to ponder:

“...sad McGregor facing the grim reality of a has been...”

These are but two example of many I could have selected from scum I wouldn’t deign to name in the predatory press. It simply made me wish to hold him even closer, to defend him even more vigorously. But allegations to emerge subsequently are of such a severe nature I have had to relax my protective grip of him, namely [Redacted due to Irish Libel Laws] and a violent unprovoked attack on a grey haired man enjoying a lunchtime drink. A video of the latter incident shows an old(ish) man simply refusing to be given some of Conor's promotional whiskey before a toast, a ‘disrespect’ for which he was then ‘sucker punched’ when he turned his back on Conor. Its an indefensible attack on a member of the community who should expect protection by the strong, not predation by the strong.

Up to this point, Conor had threatened to transcend the sport of MMA, and as being Irish became culturally cool again on the global stage I thought he might become an avatar of implicit Irish identity. Here was something vivid and vital for people to coalesce around, part of it is a unifying myth of the fighting Irish, manifest with such stark ferocity by Conor as to break barriers between individuals down. It didn’t matter how true it all was, we had these moments which each other, now. It was not to be.

In hindsight there were some ‘red flags’ before the fight that would indicate a general malaise in his camp, that has been subsequently confirmed as present by Conor himself when he admitted he was not as committed to his training regimen as he had been for previous bouts. The pre-229 press conferences were absent psychological onslaught he inflicts on his opponents, often with real wit and charm. He was drinking and promoting his (then) new whiskey brand, and resorted to cringe inducing attacks on a tactically quiet Khabib. Amongst some of the insults, Conor tried to create some difficulty in the Russian and Dagestani identities Khabib straddles, and called Khabib's father a coward for (correctly) not seeking to violently address historic animosities when meeting Russian/Dagestani/Chechen heads of State.

For all his relative silence and (according to Conor) language capabilities during the presser, Khabib still had the best line when he queried why if Ireland is a fighting nation, he is always speaking in English when Ireland has its own language! It was a brutal takedown that portended the fight. Conor resorted to mocking Khabibs pronunciation in the said English language, just one of the (at least) five languages he is said to speak. It was a cringe inducing bully dynamic that has persisted after the fight as Conor taunts him on twitter for an undeserved rematch and Khabib replies simply “[Redacted]. You are a [Redacted]”.

Although there have been even fewer opportunities for the press to meet and examine Conor before this bout than there was for UFC 229 (which itself had Conor refusing to do as many media requests as normally required), the few bits of information that has been revealed give cause for alarm. His head coach John Kavaunagh has indicated that the camp for Cerrone was designed/dictated entirely by Conor himself since according to Kavaunagh, and I paraphrase ‘he [Conor] knows more about fighting than all of us put together’. A fighter designing his routine and being successful has not been done before, which doesn’t preclude this being another ‘first’ for Conor, but it seems improbable, it smacks more of ego. A return to the regimen that yielded such historic results along with performances of a timeless beauty would of seemed more desirable.

But this preview will differ from the structure of ones done for his previous fights. I will not be aggregating the key factors to indicate who the victor is likely to be, it doesn’t matter what the outcome is. Whoever the winner may be, it feels the Irish have lost already.
