Right Wing Watch 👀 ‘Christocrat’ Rick Scarborough Has a Plan to ‘Expunge’ Texas ‘Of Every Immoral Book in the Library’

Rick Scarborough—a self-described “Christocrat,” strident anti-LGBTQ activist, and longtime critic of public education—has his sights set on taking over public education in Texas this year. He intends to do so by taking over school boards and fearmongering about public school students “being groomed by homosexuals and the trans perverts [and] recruited into their evil lifestyles.”

Last week, Scarborough revealed another aspect of his strategy. Speaking about his intention to take over school boards at an event organized by the Texas Tea Party Republican Women, Scarborough admitted that he is trying to “take over America” for Jesus and is working to “expunge this entire state of every immoral book in the library.”

Scarborough began his remarks by recounting how, earlier in his career, he had been portrayed in the media a right-wing theocrat intent on forcing his far-right Christian views on the nation. That was an accurate assessment, Scarborough now admits.

“They went after me as trying to take over the town, trying to take over America,” Scarborough said. “And, in all honesty, I was, but I couldn’t say that. I mean, why not take it over for Jesus?”

Right Wing Watch ✒ ‘Christocrat’ Rick Scarborough Forces Runoff Elections in His Effort to ‘Take Over’ Texas School Boards.

In September, Right Wing Watch reported that Rick Scarborough, a self-described “Christocrat,” strident anti-LGBTQ activist, and longtime critic of public education, had begun raising money through his group Recover America to fund an effort to elect right-wing candidates to school boards in three Houston-area school districts. 

In October, Scarborough announced that if his group was successful in taking over these three school boards, he planned to raise millions of dollars to mobilize thousands of Texas pastors who will activate their congregations to ensure that conservative Christians “take over their local school boards” across the state.

In Tuesday’s election, five of the nine trustees on the Houston Independent School District board of education were up for reelection, and they were all targets of Scarborough’s effort. While Scarborough did not succeed in defeating any of them, four of them have been forced into runoff elections in December, which is required if no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote.
