Former IRA hunger striker Laurence McKeown will take part in a 24-hour fast this weekend to mark two years of genocide in Gaza

Mr McKeown spent 70 days without food as part of the 1981 hunger strike over the withdrawal of political status from republican prisoners.

A special ‘Hunger for Justice/Troscadh ar son na Córa’ fast has been organised to mark the second anniversary of the Israeli onslaught in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of around 65,000 Palestinians, and “is aimed at focusing attention on those who fund that genocide”.

The Palestinian death toll includes thousands of woman and children, while hundreds more have starved as a result of Israeli blockades on food supplies.

Israel launched the current operation after around 1,200 people were killed during a Hamas-led attack inside Israeli territory in October 2023, during which around 200 hostages were taken.

Details of a ceasefire deal reached between Hamas and Israel were announced on Thursday.

A series of events has been organised to coincide with this weekend’s fast, which begins at 6pm on Friday.
