My next door neighbour, Geraldine, who died less than a fortnight ago applied her dextrous fingers to the Drogs headwear, sewing a further beanie inside the original to cushion my head from the clasps that hold the badges in place. Ingenious, I thought, but run of the mill for Geraldine who touched so many parts of this town with her kindness.
Geraldine also crocheted keyring fobs in the Palestine colours, contributing in her own way to keeping in public view the plight of those experiencing Israel's genocidal onslaught.
While wearing the beanie that Geraldine had so ably transformed at yesterday evening's cup match, I added some new colours - those of Palestine. The Drogheda Stands With Palestine group - which will again today gather in West Street, as it has done since October 2023 in response to the onset of the Israeli genocide - requested that any of its members attending the game bring with them flags, scarves or other emblems in the hope that RTE - at Sullivan and Lambe Park to cover the game - could not help but remind those watching at home that a genocide is taking place.
We who gather in West Street need no reminder that this is a genocide enabled by the dominant bloc in the Western political class which has continued to arm Israel and diplomatically sup with it rather than shun it completely. Israel, a rogue state that contravenes every law in the supposed rules based international order, as a pariah should have no ethical standing in the eyes of other nation states.
Despite Israel's failed hasbara that it launches like flak to fragment and disperse authentic characterisations of its savagery, it manages to continue the genocide and retain standing with most Western governments and the EU, because of politicians like that detestable swine who leads the British Labour Party and is currently UK prime minister. Earlier this week Sewer Keir Starmer, had the brazen effrontery to deny that a genocide was taking place in Gaza. This so called doyen of the legal profession has made a career out of flashing his human rights credentials, proclaiming that human rights are central to everything he does. His lying is Orwellian. Truth is, he is an anti-human rights lawyer, a co-conspirator with others of his ilk who continue to do what so many have sought to do with their Holocaust denial in the wake of the Shoah undergone by Jewish people at the hands of the Nazis. They deny genocide is taking place when in fact they should be in the dock at the International Court of Justice on charges of enabling the very genocide they strive so vigorously but vainly to cover up.
If only Starmer was as eager to make poverty and homelessness disappear in his own bailiwick as he is to make charges of genocide evaporate, what a different society the UK would be. Starmer is not just protecting Israel, he is protecting himself. If he can deny that genocide ever happened it must be his hope that he will avoid the unkindness that history looks otherwise destined to bestow on him.

His secretary responds by telling him: Of course Sir: You are a fucking liar and loathed by the entire nation.
A truly loathsome creature, the hold that Israel has over Starmer leads me to consider that maybe Peter Mandelson wasn't alone when he visited Epstein Island.
