Sixty-seven years ago, I was baptized into the Lutheran church as a Christian and learned at an early age that Christianity was to be three things: available, accessible and demonstrated, but never required. Today, we’re witnessing in real time the Christian faith I once knew devolve into weaponized “Christian nationalism.”

Rather than emerging as a national recognition of Christ’s teachings, Christian nationalism has become a rallying cry for those who believe America should be defined not by its democratic traditions, but by a particular “version” of Christianity woven into the DNA of the government. Nowhere in the Gospels did Christ call for his followers to seize earthly power, write laws in his name or enforce religious conformity through national, state and local governments.🪶

Facade

At first glance, this march of Christian soldiers may sound harmless or even noble. Indeed, I’m all in for a nation guided by faith, morality and virtue. Who wouldn’t be? But when you peel back the facade, Christian nationalism actually bastardizes the teachings of Christ and distorts Christianity into a weapon to be wielded to divide Americans against one another.
