Yuval Berger 🏴Alfie and I never met in person.

Alfie Gallagher

We got to know each other when debating on Facebook. Though in most cases we were on opposite ideological sides, me being a Zionist Israeli and Alfie – well, Alfie being Alfie . . . we developed great respect for each other.

Whoever read Alfie’s comments in discussions could see that there was a person with impressive intellectual energy, concerned about what’s right and true. And yet with all his ideological and intellectual vigour Alfie had the wisdom never to become zealous. He was always open to receive challenging bits of information.

More importantly, he never resorted to venom or vex, as often seen in debates on social media. While his content often had me pulling my hair with ideological rage, it was quite clear that the writer was gifted with a kind soul and an open mind.

Alfie never tried to “own” the other guy, but was engaging in a discussion in a truly inquisitive spirit. His kindness, courtesy and pursuit of insight made me not only respect him, but also like him, and I could only hope this was mutual.

I only wish he knew how unique he was. Not sure if anyone ever actually told him.

  1. Alfie was everything us writers should be: ethically grounded but never dogmatic. Always open to query and revision while retaining scholastic integrity.
