It is with profound regret that The Pensive Quill reports the death of its dear friend Alfie Gallagher.

Over many years Alfie's work featured on TPQ. He did interviews, book reviews and articles, many of which also appeared on his own blog Left From The West.

Alfie was a very close friend of Anthony McIntyre, whom he inspired with his ideas and warmed with his friendship.

A fiercely intelligent thinker who combined his forensic mind with the most gentle of demeanours, Alfie will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

A sensitive soul whose enduring trait was empathy and compassion, he was a bright light whose loss dims his community.

The Pensive Quill extends its condolences to Alfie's devoted parents, his loving brothers and sisters, and his wider family circle.

  1. This is a really tragic and untimely loss. Alfie always gave a fresh dimension to left wing thinking and it is fair to say that he represented the values of Solidarity and Enlightenment. RIP Alfie and condolences to his loved ones and friends.

    1. Barry - he was in that mode. I valued his take on all matter of things.

  2. I'm very sorry to read this. I never met the man but, from the conversations we had online, he seemed to be a deeply intelligent and enthusiastic man whose knowledge of politics and political thinking was on another level.

    Lest we forget.

  3. Condolences Anthony on your friend's passing.
The only comfort that those who mourn him can take is that his suffering is over and he's now at peace.

  4. Very sorry to have heard this sad news. Alfie was always kind, polite and thoughtful on the Quill. He was passionate and often brought a mischievous sense of humour too.

I remember many a debate, and a generous comment by Alfie on one in particular in which we disagreed on a moral question.

My condolences to all his family and friends. Suaimhneas síoraí ar a anam.
