Anthony McIntyre ☠ When we gather later today in West Street as part of our weekly vigil in solidarity with the Palestinians enduring unfathomable suffering, we shall be mindful of a number of things.

Vigil For Gaza @ West Street Drogheda
21-September 2024

Firstly, we are barely a week away from the onset of the genocide that was heralded with the dog whistle call from the corrupt Israeli Prime Minister and serial war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu for the IDF to remember Amalek.

The genocide has now lasted four times as long as its Rwandan precedent in 1994 which was not halted because the genocidaires felt it was mission accomplished. It took a military intervention by a Tutsi led army to stop the perpetrators in their tracks. No sign of anything like that happening this time. The Wester powers will not permit such an intervention.

Secondly, like the Nazi beast whose nefarious activities impregnated the state of Israel in the 1940s, ensuring that the apple did not fall far from the tree, the Israelis are waging war in multiple regions.  Molded in the genocidal image of the Nazis, Israel's lebensraum policy of expansionism has taken them from warring on Gaza to warring on the West Bank and now Lebanon. It also has Iran very much in its sights.

Secondly, the world we live in is approaching the point where it could face an existential threat. Putin's threat to become the first national leader to reintroduce nuclear weapons onto the world stage since what the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, described as the Holocaust of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is truly alarming.

The leader of NATO which proclaims to the world that it is determined to assist Ukraine in its endeavours to curb Russian aggression, is all the time arming Israel so that it may continue with its own aggression as it prosecutes its Nazi-like expansionist wars. The Israeli columnist, Gideon Levy, when probed if Biden could do anything to halt Israel, replied that he must cease arming it and went on to ask just what Biden thinks Israel will do with the arms it is receiving from the US other than continue with its genocide.

The US is a major player in two wars in separate parts of the globe. It can claim no moral high ground in its proxy war against Russia while fanning the flames of the infinitely more depraved war being waged by its racially supremacist beachhead in the Middle East.

Earlier this week when Biden agreed to provide Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles, a stipulation - which the execable anti-human rights lawyer and British PM, Keir Starmer, is reportedly trying to overcome - was put in place that the weapons system was not to be used against Russia on its own territory. Why no similar constraints on weapons supplied to Israel by the US? Even if Biden feels driven by a Zionist imperative to continue arming Israel, he could, if he chose, insist on no weapons being used against civilians.  Biden and the US is up to its neck in the genocide. They are even more culpable than France was in Rwanda.

Although a much abused term, often used to denote evil rather than a specific form of exceptional political state, Israel and the US are both guilty of fascist behaviour in Gaza. Fascism, in its quintessential form, tends to inflict the bulk of atrocities outside of its own society. It happened with Italy in Ethiopia and with Nazi Germany in a wide range of societies. It is happening today in Gaza, and spreading fast.

This week in the United Nations, the Irish government reps stayed glued to their seats when Netanyahu arose to speak while other nations walked out. Moreover, there have been worrying reports of clandestine tete-a-tetes between an Irish government minister and his Israeli counterpart, in which the the Irish minister gave assurances that it would block the progress of the Occupied Territories Bill.

Each week as we gather in West Street, a call goes out to the government to pass the Occupied Territories Bill. Yet here we have a government minister seemingly conspiring with Israel to sabotage it. Taoiseach Simon Harris can make all the condemnation of Israel that he wishes but his government should be judged not on what it says but on what it does. Spouting hot air in the hope that the smoke from it might mask a less ethical approach to the cold blooded massacre occurring daily, is all sizzle and no steak.
