Time:1000-1600
Location: Ulster University, York Street, Belfast BT15 1WZ
Transitional Justice Institute and Human Rights Consortium invite you to Rights for Everyone: Positive Obligations and the Protection of Human Rights.
This one-day workshop for civil society, policy-makers and academics reflects on the current state of human rights protection, and in particular the role of positive obligations in the protection of human rights. It takes place within the context of differing and sometimes conflicting human rights agendas at different levels of government in the UK.
Speakers will address the role of positive obligations in the framework of the European Convention on Human Rights and more specifically the contribution of the doctrine to human rights protection in Great Britain and in Northern Ireland. As well as examining the concept of positive obligations speakers will address how positive obligations can protect socioeconomic rights, civil and political rights such as the right to life and voting rights, and can protect groups liable to discrimination or marginalisation such as victims of trafficking, persons with disabilities and women.
Confirmed speakers: Vladislava Stoyanova (Lund), Alan Brecknell (Pat Finucane Centre), Elaine Crory (Women’s Resource and Development Agency), Nuala Toman (Disability Action), Gillian Kane (Ulster), Caitriona Mackel (Ulster), Rory O’Connell (Ulster), Kevin Hanratty (Human Rights Consortium).
