I have a couple of Toffees fans as mates and they have been slabbering all week about how Everton were going to feed off their feeling of injustice at the EPL to tank Man U.
On Friday we were out for a curry and then the Napoleon movie, and the heat went up another notch. Two of my buddies are United men and the Everton fans were on full volume, giving it large about United’s impending doom. At kick-off the heat was impressive inside Goodison but young Garnacho very quickly put out the flames with a blistering overhead kick.
It reminded me of last season’s FA Cup Final when my United mates were giving the same treatment to me about killing our Treble dream, only for Gundogan to stick a 25 yard volley in the top corner after 11 seconds. There’s nothing like an early screamer to kill the vibe! All the pundit chat after the Everton game was about whether this was the greatest overhead kick goal in English history. I would have to say no. It was better than Rooney’s against Man City, as you can clearly see he shinned it. Yes it came off his shin like shit off a shovel, but he meant to hit it with his foot.
My personal favourite was Trevor Sinclair’s for QPR in the FA Cup in 1997. In that goal he meets the ball at a right angle from the cross, giving him less room for imperfection. It was also hit outside the box. It had to be hit with perfect timing and with maximum athleticism. He did both.
The first one I remember watching was Dennis Stuart’s in the ’75 League Cup Final. Good enough to win any cup final. I also remember great ones from Crouchy and Collymore, Berbatov against Liverpool and Emre Can. While overhead goals are always a great addition to any match, they are not my favourites. Other spectacular volleys are much less common and much more pleasing to the eye. Like Giroud’s scorpion kick or Haaland’s volley against Dortmund from Chancel’s ridiculous pass. Other noteworthy classics include Van Persie’s volley at Old Trafford and Di Canio’s volley against Chelsea or his unbelievable scissors kick against Wimbledon.
But you still just can’t beat a team goal with an incisive, defence splitting pass. In a previous article I stated that my favourite goal of all time was Socrates for Brazil v Italy in the ’82 World Cup and my favourite in England was Bergkamp’s sublime spin and finish for Arsenal v Newcastle.
So, at the end of the day Garnacho’s goal was pure peach of an overhead, but isn’t the greatest in English football, nor should it be even considered in any “best goal” category. But that is just my opinion.

Hughes ( 1985 ) scored an 18 yard flying bicycle screamer . Reds got out of jail on saturday ; looked lethargic until Gravy came on . Need a # 6 signing in January .
ReplyDeleteLooks brilliant when it works, look like a plonker when it doesn't.

ReplyDeleteI forgot about Sparky's efforts, he had a good few spectacular ones. Pool were lucky on Saturday, McAllister doesn't look like the real deal.
I don't know what is wrong with McAllister but he seems to be struggling in that set up.
