After City's last-minute crumbling at the hands of a toothless Real Madrid which saw them dumped out of the UCL, they faced Newcastle on Sunday knowing that a victory would widen the gap over second placed Liverpool to three points. Liverpool had, somehow, drawn with Spurs the day before despite complete domination over their London opponents.
City's defeat in Madrid and Liverpool's draw with Spurs only goes to prove that it really ain't over till it's over. City have two very tough away games at Wolves and West Ham, where they face a real prospect of dropping points, especially as they are without Stones, Dias and Walker for the rest of the season. City could still finish the season with nothing. Also, Liverpool could still end the season with only the Carabao Cup. If they lose away at Aston Villa tonight, they will be 3 points behind City with a goal difference of at least 5 short of City' (which is effectively another point) with only 2 games remaining. Plus, the two cup finals against Chelsea and Real Madrid are no "gimmes", as football watchers are well aware. I still believe City will win the league and Liverpool at least the FA cup, but nothing is in the bag yet.
At the other end, Burnley's run of points came to an abrupt end with an unexpected loss to an improving Villa side. Everton gained a crucial win away to Leicester and Leeds fell narrowly to Arsenal. 2-1 was the final score but Leeds will be kicking themselves after Meslier threw in the first goal and then the crucial Luke Ayling got himself sent off and banned for upcoming games for an unnecessary two-footed challenge. The defeat sees them into the bottom three with a tough home game against Chelsea on Wednesday night. They will be hoping that Chelsea rest players ahead of Saturday's FA cup final.

DeleteLooks as if it is lights out Barry - sad to see. Replacing Bielsa did not work. Two sendings off in a row: they need to sort that discipline problem. Ten men will always find it hard to compete.
DeleteSuper sub Origi should of been on for the last half hour V Spurs . Success for the Reds means winning the Prem or CL . Scoring 90 points + & not winning the league is crazy . Arsenal & Utd have club record points tallies of just 90 & 91 .
ReplyDeleteThey weren't up to the task against Spurs. Salah is doing virtually nothing. Klopp sounded as if he was echoing the comments of Brendan Rodgers after the 0-2 defeat at Chelsea which cost them the title. Spurs had a game plan, stuck to it and nearly stole it at the end. It is up to LFC to have a better attack than the opposition have a defence.
