Alex McCrory and friends ✒ urge support for protesting Turkish political prisoners facing death in the country's jails.

In 2001-2002 a Republican delegation travelled to Turkey to visit the Death Fast houses in a poor neighbourhood situated on the banks of the Bosphorus River.

What we witnessed motivated us to organise a campaign on behalf of the Turkish death fasters.
The highlight of the campaign was when Sinan Ersoy, a tireless campaigner on behalf of Turkish political prisoners, addressed thousands of Republicans in Casement Park. Other events included:

  • A large demonstration in Dublin;
  • a solidarity fast at the old Andersontown barrack site;
  • protests outside the Turkish Embassy;
  • the painting of a large mural depicting a real life death faster;
  • countless public meetings.

Needless to say, Turkish political prisoners took great heart from the solidarity shown by Irish Republicans. As for the death fasters themselves, well, they looked to Bobby Sands for their inspiration. My first conversation with a senior death faster, he wanted to know everything about Bobby's struggle for justice.

All this brings me to the reason for my post. I was contacted by Sinan Ersoy this week informing me of a death fast involving two political prisoners. Underneath I include a link to information explaining their reasons for going on hunger strike. The picture it paints is one of extreme oppression and injustice. Nothing has changed in Turkey in two decades.

Finally, Sinan is appealing to Irish Republicans to rally behind the death fasters once again. They view us as brothers and sisters in struggle. Therefore, we will do what little we can to highlight the situation here in Ireland.

A number of events are being planned for the Easter weekend. Details of these will be posted up on social media. Invitations to these events are open to all Republicans.
