Sara Canning answers 13 questions in a Booker's Dozen.

TPQ: What are you currently reading?

SC: Burned by Sam McBride - required reading for anyone here who has any interest in our political landscape!

TPQ: Best book you have ever read?

SC: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, or Testament of Youth.

TPQ: A must-read before you die?

SC: I have only given up on three books in my life, and the only one of the three that I would like to get through is Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Could be part of my pandemic panic reading.

TPQ: A preference for fact or fiction?

SC: Fiction, fact is so much stranger and more disturbing.

TPQ: Favourite female author?

SC: I love lots of female authors from different genres. Susan Cooper gave us The Dark Is Rising sequence so she’ll always top the list, JK Rowling for Harry Potter (but not for the transphobia), Margaret Atwood, Jojo Moyes, Karin Slaughter, the wonderful Lucy Caldwell and of course Lyra McKee.

TPQ: Favourite male author?

SC: Ken Follett, or Stephen King.

A Berlin Book Tower in memory of the Nazi book burning.

TPQ: First book you ever read?

SC: Danny the Champion of the World. I still have pheasant dreams as a result.

TPQ: Favourite childhood author?

SC: Jack Scoltock, Susan Cooper, CS Lewis, Roald Dahl, Paula Danziger, Louise Fitzhugh. Anything that was either rich with fantasy and folklore, or relatable and funny. I still dip back into these and am always engrossed.

TPQ: Any book you point blank refuse to read?

SC: Anything written by a ‘celebrity politician’, or one of their children, or any of their sycophants.

TPQ: Any author you point blank refuse to read?

SC: Ian McEwan, Enduring Love gave me A-Level PTSD.

TPQ: Pick a book to give to somebody so that they would more fully understand you.

SC: Yikes, just one? The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It counts as one. Yes it does.

TPQ: Last book you gave as a present?

SC: I gave Lyra a copy of Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe for her birthday last year.

TPQ: Book you would most like to see turned into a movie?

SC: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.

  1. Sara - I am reading Burned at the minute. It is very insightful. Loved Follet and King many years ago but never got to finish the Dark Tower series. Have always liked McEwan - Amsterdam and On Chesil Beach were great reads. Say Nothing - hauntingly atmospheric.
Thanks for doing this - it is my favourite slot of the week on the blog.
