It is with deep sadness that TPQ has learned of the death of Uri Avnery. An indefatigable advocate for peace and a Palestinian state, his weekly column appeared in TPQ for the past number of years. He had also given permission for his articles to feature in The Blanket.
Very sad to learn of the death OF Uri Avnery. Always enjoyed his erudite, thoughtful yet passionate pieces in TPQ. A necessary antidote to much of the unpleasant polemic that Israel/Palestine often stirs up on both sides of the divide that this issue almost uniquely generates. The genuine conscience of the Israeli nation. RIP.
Former IRA volunteer and ex-prisoner, spent 18 years in Long Kesh, 4 years on the blanket and no-wash/no work protests which led to the hunger strikes of the 80s. Completed PhD at Queens upon release from prison. Left the Republican Movement at the endorsement of the Good Friday Agreement, and went on to become a journalist. Co-founder of The Blanket, an online magazine that critically analyzed the Irish peace process. Lead researcher for the Belfast Project, an oral history of the Troubles.
Very sad to hear. TPQ has lost a valuable contributor.
