Workhouses routinely threw their dead into deep pits dug in their own grounds.
Dungannon workhouse grounds comprise roughly 4.5 acres.
When their grounds became full of such filled-in pits, they acquired some nearby land in which they continued that burial pattern.
Sad to say, Dungannon is not the only barbarous town in Ireland. Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, too, built (a housing development) atop its workhouse site.
My old classmate, Johnny Croghan, was the excavation contractor.
He semi-whispered to me, horrified, that he had excavated the intermingled remains of toddlers, loaded all into trucks and dumped them offsite until the scandal halted the project, and the number of houses was reduced.
Seeing that the inmates were segregated into seven categories, each with its own adjacent burial ground, Croghan must have been excavating from beside the rooms containing Category vi,) children between two and five or Category vii) children under two years of age.

Trying to find information about them is like cutting a stone with knife tha last I was told is that the records are shut for one hundred years.
