While conscious of the need to remember the ideals of 1916 we also realise how the thinking that guided the Rising remains of relevance today, given the state of contemporary society. We need to reclaim and relate the spirit of those times, that they might help us confront the reality of austerity Ireland and the harsh neoliberal agenda which has culminated in the much-hated water charges.
With all this in mind, we’ve invited representatives from organisations who’re helping reclaim that spirit, to fight the social injustices we see today. Dublin Says No, The National Land League of Ireland, The Hub Ireland and the Independent Workers Union will all be speaking to commemorate 1916 and we’ll also remember those heroes of Easter Week in song and poem.
As with all our commemorations the occasion will be a family-friendly event. If anyone would like to carry one of the sixteen placards of each of the executed leaders please make yourself known to one of the stewards.
