I am a United States citizen of Irish decent writing with deep concern on behalf of Christy Walsh who is presently on hunger strike. I travelled to Ireland about a year ago and recently presented an expo of the photography I captured there, in Troy NY. Among other locations and periods the expo had a strong focus on some of the more famous and war torn communities in the north.
In compiling and presenting this expo I studied and documented over one hundred years of the history of the conflict; and through my independent research and study on the topic I have come to the following conclusion. The suffering and misery that the Irish people have endured throughout it is profoundly saddening and sickening. To see yet another person on hunger strike this very moment prompted me to write and ask that you to do all within your power to intervene in this situation.
Also, as a US citizen it seems that the British Justice system its self is an area great concern. It seems that as a US citizen I enjoy many more rights that I have come to view simply as Human Rights that processes such as Diplock courts do not afford. John F. Kennedy, once said:
The very word secrecy is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it…
It is my understanding that Christy Walsh is now free and clear, yet now on Hunger Strike seems a very serious red flag so to speak, but at the very least a cry for help and he deserves some simple attention if it may save his life. As an objective outsider I think it would only prove beneficial in interests of peace for nationalists and unionists alike to pay the utmost attention and appropriate reparations to humanitarian concerns like these.
