1916 Societies Organising at Queen's University Belfast

1916 Societies explaining how they have taken their campaign to Queen's University. The piece featured on the Societies website.

One Ireland One Vote.

Over the 1st and 2nd of October just past, the 1916 Societies held a meet-and-greet with the student’s at Queen’s University in Belfast, taking the republican message and the call for Irish reunification to the Fresher’s Bazaar at the Student’s Union. Feedback on the day was fantastic with moves now afoot on the strength of reaction to set up a Cumann within the University.

Speaking afterwards, National Organiser Aidan Ferguson said:

we could not be more pleased with the response we got the last couple of days and already the bones of a Society for Queen’s is in the offing. The calibre of people who approached us looking more information and showing interest in helping with our campaign leaves me in no doubt an opportunity is opening up in this country once again to put republicanism centre-stage. Our hope is that a Society at Queen’s can be a big part of that.

Going forward a follow-on information night is already in the planning, with a suitable evening in the coming weeks being set up to better explain who we are, what we stand for, how we hope to achieve our aims and how anyone interested in assisting our project can tie in going forward. Judging from reaction on the ground an appetite exists for building a Society at Queen’s and establishing a presence within the student population in Belfast. Without doubt this would be a massive boost to the wider project of the 1916 Societies as we seek to expand our ‘One Ireland-One Vote’ campaign and create a credible alternative to the failed status quo as it currently exists in Ireland.

Anyone at QUB interested in finding out more on the Societies or helping with our campaign for Irish reunification keep an eye on our website for further details, which all being well should be advertised in the days ahead. You can also keep abreast of our activities through our Facebook and Twitter accounts which are updated daily. Don’t be afraid to get in touch through either or by contacting us here on this site.
