Steven Katsineris with a poem written earlier on the tragedy of Israeli inflicted suffering

They stole your country,
dispossessed your people
and broke your gentle heart.

Exiled and homeless,
you tried to make a new start.
Another country, family
and work to stem the tears.

But the loss was just too great to bear.
Worn down by the continual fight,
all but forgotten the refugee’s plight.

That night you sought to end the nightmares
and the pain you tried to keep out of sight.

I understand how you felt, you know that.
Even the love of family and friends,
cannot heal some wounds,
overcome the bitter memories and isolation.

So much strain, you just could not stand
the hurt any more.
In a final distressed act,
desperate to put an end to your agony,
you took your life.

I am sorry that I was not there
to help you through that hard time
and give you some hope,
that things could change.

If you had only waited to see
the glory and sacrifice of the Intifada
and the unity and power of your risen people,
you would have seen the prospects
for a brighter future for Palestine.

You were a good man, who contributed much
and you left us fine memories of a worthy life,
to help us carry on with life
and the struggle for return and liberation.
