"The Miracle of Bern"

Guest writer Thomas Dixie Elliot penned a few statistical thoughts in the aftermath of Brazil's defeat at the hands of Germany on Tuesday night.

All the stats being thrown around about tonight's match - which was an incredible result - but not one of the so called experts mentioned one of the most amazing World Cup Finals ever in terms of goals .... The 1954 Finals in Switzerland.

The great Hungarian team which included Puskas beat West Germany 8-3 in the group stages and South Korea 9-0 to win the group. In a play off West Germany beat Turkey 7-2 to proceed.

In the Semi-Final West Germany beat Austria 6-1 to meet Hungry who had beaten Uruguay 4-2. (Austria had beat the hosts Switzerland 7-5 in the Quarter Finals).

West Germany who had been beaten by Hungry, 8-3 in the group stages beat the Hungarians 3-2 having come back from being 2 down in the first 8 mins.

So I don't know about all the stats the experts were knocking around but clearly no one thought to point out the highest scoring World Cup finals ever to them .... 1954.

  1. Obviously that tournament resulted in the decision to consider 'defending' in football matches.

  2. On the subject of stats I penned this short piece on the death of a footballing great who passed during the week with barely a mention on the British media...

Alfredo Di Stefano, without doubt one of the greatest footballers ever, has died aged 88.....

He was a member of the Real Madrid side which won five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960, scoring in every one, a feat which will never be repeated. He scored the opening goal in the iconic European Cup final of 1960 when Real beat Eintract Frankfurt 7-3 at Hampden Park. Frankfurt had demolished Rangers 12-4 on aggregate in the semifinals and looked unbeatable until they met Di Stefano's Madrid in the final. De Stefano and Puskas scored all seven of Madrids goals with Puskas scoring four....

De Stefano was also capped by Spain, Colombia and Argentina but never played in the World Cup finals.

  3. From Beano

Di Stefano was by all accounts one of the greatest players. He is held in high esteem by most. As a very young boy--living in a house with 5 football mad uncles--his was one of the names that conjured up magic with the very mention. As an 8 year old I remember being kept off school to watch England v The Rest of the World game at Wembley..anniversary of the FA.

Di Stefano captained the ROW side--at the age of 37. Puskas could only be named as a reserve ... wouldn't be subs until 1965. Imagine this for a forward line...Kopa-Law-Di Stefano-Eusebio=Gento...!!! A Northern Ireland player was picked to represent the ROW--full back Alex Elder, but he was injured playing for Burnley and was replaced by Karl Heinz Schnellinger. Law scored the ROW goal in a 2-1 defeat which is a part feature of a great quiz question. What player scored 3 times against the same goalkeeper at the same ground in the same year? Denis Law against Gordon Banks...this match...Man Utd v Leicester FA Cup Final....Scotland v England.
