Volunteer Seamus Finn Commemoration This Weekend In Streamstown

A 1916 Societies commemorative event is being held in Streamstown this weekend.

The Spirit of Irish Freedom Society Westmeath, as part of our initiative to honour our county’s fallen ‘Defenders of the Republic’ in the run-up to the Centenary of the 1916 Rising, are holding a commemoration and wreathlaying ceremony this Sunday in Boher, Streamstown, Co. Westmeath to mark the 95 year anniversary of Volunteer Seamus Finn, Óglaigh na hÉireann.

Seamus was killed in action while participating in an IRA ambush on a convoy of British troops at Auburn, Athlone, Co. Westmeath on 2nd November 1920. A daring grenade and rifle assault was carried out on a regiment of ‘Black and Tans’, in reprisal for the death of Terence MacSwiney, Mayor of Cork, who died on Hungerstrike a week previous in Brixton Prison, England.

The event will begin at 3.00pm sharp, assembling at the Cemetary Car Park in Boher, proceeding from there to the graveside of Seamus Finn where a wreathlaying and short commemoration will be held in his honour.

All are welcome and for more information contact the Spirit of Irish Freedom Society on their Facebook page or get in touch directly through this site.
