Thomas Ashe Society Remember ‘The Three Volunteers’ In Omagh

The 1916 Societies commemorate IRA dead: Volunteers Paddy Carty, Dermot Crowley and Sean Loughran.

On Thursday 25th June, members of the Thomas Ashe Society gathered in Omagh to pay tribute to Volunteers Paddy Carty, Dermot Crowley and Sean Loughran, whose anniversaries occured that day. They died on the Gortin Road in the town, 42 years ago, in defence of the Irish people and to build anew the Irish Republic.

Following a reading of the Proclamation a wreath was laid at the spot where they died, before a rendition of Amhrann na bhFiann brought the short proceedings to a close. The wreath was then taken to St. Malachy’s Churchyard Edendork and laid on the grave of Paddy Carty and Sean Loughran, who are buried within the Republican Plot.

Commenting afterwards, Secretary of the Thomas Ashe Society Sean Bresnahan said:

As my daughters laid the wreath tonight, where two of those men lie buried, the words of that great Irish Patriot Bobby Sands came to mind, ‘our revenge will be the laughter of our children.

Patsy Quinn lies there with them, only sixteen years-old when he gave his life. Sixteen. My son, who earlier read the Proclamation, will be the same age in a matter of weeks. It would make you think.

‘These men have lit the way and we must follow the path. We must stick to that road less travelled and find the way to the Irish Republic, for which they laid down their lives. Our generation will finish the task, it’s still ‘our day will come’. While Ireland holds these graves an end to British rule is as certain as the rising of the moon.

Their love for old Ireland was their only crime;
For the love of old Ireland they proudly did die
