Vigil

Spoiler Alert ... Do Not Read Any More If You Wanna Watch A BBC Series Called Vigil.

I read a few reviews of the series then saw an ex-British navy submariner on BBC TV this morning talking about the series. He was sceptical about it but no doubt told not to spoil it. So I've watched the first two series - makes a change from reading old Sinn Féin manifestos - and although the acting is ok the storyline is incredible.

A cop goes on to a nuclear submarine to investigate a murder. This machine is one of the most protected in Britain's arsenal but she is able to question people like a cop would in a playground. It's all So serious with stiff upper lip officers and working class submariners doing shitty work.

Then during a security alert they almost crash into a tanker. Fuck sake this submarine has probably the most sophisticated detection equipment they could probably detect what trees Gerry Adams hugs. The BBC can do some half decent stuff but this is ridiculous. To get a real sense of what life is like on a submarine the writers should have at least got a juke at that classic film, Das Boot. Thank fuck I don't pay a TV licence!!

Racism

Racism and sectarianism is rife in soccer. We only need look at Scottish and English where the likes of black and Irish players - most notably James McClean - are abused regularly.

Of course it's also rife in many other countries and it's stinking. What is galling is English media outlets pontificating about Hungary fans booing and chanting racist tunes when English fans do the same. Those scum are hated throughout Europe and not being a fan of the Free State soccer team the one thing I can say - their fans are the most respected. They never lower themselves to the depths of English scum. Sky, ITV and BBC need to look closely at their own coverage which is very biased

Oysters

It's more than a cliche when we say every day we learn something new. Earlier today my friend Fra McCartney asked if I'd ever tasted oysters, and I told him the only time was at a buffet years ago when they were covered in breadcrumbs and fried.

They were nice but obviously not the same as fresh ones. I'm not squeamish about food but just thought oysters were too dear so never bothered with them.

Fra told me he got a lotta fresh ones and asked if I'd like some. Of course I jumped at it so he gave me 6 and explained how to open them (or how to shuck them) so when I got home to the flat I took three and to be honest they were far better than I expected. I didn't put Tabasco sauce or lemon on them and that's how I'll take them in the future.

That's another bit of food that I've tasted. So the next will be sheep's brains or bull's balls.

  1. I love Sunday nights when Vigil comes on!! The plot is outlandish but the tension is good.
Don't think I have tried oyster but I did snails in Paris a couple of years ago. Delicious.

I enjoyed Padraic Mac Coitir review of Vigil, agreed with him about English so called football fans, but I draw the line at bottom feeders and bulls balls that's to pornographic for me.
