From Gript the conservative writer and anti-abortion activist Niamh Uí Bhriain poses the question of Why aren’t Direct Provision Centres in Dalkey instead of Oughterard?

It seems that the people of Oughterard in Galway are not for turning. Despite orders from Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan that they should ‘step back’ and let the government ride rough-shed over the concerns of the community, they continue to protest against the establishment of a direct provision centre they see as unworkable and inhumane.

This issue was first brought to national attention when 800 people attended a public meeting in Oughterard where Government minister Seán Kyne was booed off the platform, mostly because of local anger that, without any consultation with the locals, the authorities had begun work on refurbishing the Connemara Gateway Hotel to accommodate migrants and asylum seekers.

Two days later 1,500 people marched in a silent protest from the church in the centre of the village to the site at the hotel. That’s practically the entire population of Oughterard, and photos of the march showed families with buggies, young people, older couples, farmers, residents all present. These are ordinary people who want their government to listen to them. Why aren’t Direct Provision Centres in Dalkey instead of Oughterard?

Why Not Dalkey?

  1. Overall this is an excellant argument, though the following is only half the picture "Wealthier people tend to be mostly in favour of unrestricted immigration, but while they like to frame this as arguing from compassion the truth is that newcomers are often a source of cheaper labour for the better-off:"

Many migrants bring their own wealth with them where the Irish business sector see them as a new source of revenue.

Earlier this year I had a meal at the Riverside Park Hotel in Macroom. As I passed it last weekend a friend from the area, pointed out how it is now a direct provision centre and is already full. It happened overnight. He knew the owners of the hotel and siad they had kept it a secret from everyone. In referring to Oughterard he questioned if Dublin might be using immigrants to repopulate the west of the country. He pointed out how some German communities way of life has completely changed because of a similar policy in Germany; and local people were concerned about that.

  2. Christy - it is a very well written piece - obviously I don't agree with her opinions on many issues but the question raised as to Dalkey is a valid one. Her challenge to the PC/Woke brigade is valuable. This is the essence of the book by Douglas Murray o the Decline of Europe.

  3. Does it challenge the work culture though? Are Connolly and Flanagan just individuals arriving coincidentally at the same position at the same time as the whole English speak world? Is there a bigger theme being missed? I blame the Mbuti Pygmy’s infiltration of our media, politics and academia. It’s a safe group to blame of course, chosen for that exact reason.

  4. Always a little suspicious when a crazy catholic zealot bandies around the word 'racist' at their enemies.
