1916 Societies Commemorations This Weekend

From the 1916 Societies:





Beginning Saturday 11th February and running through until the following weekend, the Éamonn Ceannt and Thomas Clarke Societies in Tyrone are hosting a series of events to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Clonoe Ambush.

The Clonoe Martyrs – Kevin Barry O’Donnell, Sean O’Farrell, Patrick Vincent and Peter Clancy – died on Active Service for the Republic on 16th February 1992. While preparing to disband following a major attack on Coalisland RUC Barracks, their Unit was ambushed by British Special Forces at the Chapel Grounds in Clonoe.

On Saturday 11th February, to begin the week’s proceedings, there will be a sponsored walk from Dungannon to Coalisland, meeting at Ann Street Car Park for 10am sharp. On the Thursday following – 16th February – the anniversary of the ambush itself – there will be a number of Wreath-Laying Ceremonies:


6.30pm, Clonoe – Graveside of Volunteer Peter Clancy

6.45pm, Coalisland – Graveside of Volunteers Sean O’Farrell and Kevin Barry O’Donnell

8.30pm, Edendork – Graveside of Volunteer Patrick Vincent


On Sunday the 19th, the main commemoration itself will be held – assembling at St. Patrick’s Church in Clonoe for 2pm sharp before marching from there to Coalisland.

Tormey Brothers To Be Remembered This Weekend In Westmeath


The Spirit of Irish Freedom Society are to hold a commemoration for IRA Volunteers James and Joseph Tormey on Sunday 12th February at Mount Temple Cemetery Westmeath. Attendees are to assemble by the Public House at the Cross roads at 2pm sharp.

The Tormey brothers where killed within a month of one and other, in service to the Irish Republic. Joseph was shot alongside Patrick Sloane while being held as POWs in Ballykinlar British Army barracks in County Down on the 17th January 1921. James (Jim) was shot while on Active Service in an ambush by the Black and Tans in Cornafulla, outside Athlone, on 2nd February 1921.


Fourth Annual Matt Fitzpatrick Commemoration Upcoming In Drumalee

On Sunday 12th February, the Matt Fitzpatrick Society Newtownbutler are holding their Annual Commemoration in memory of their namesake – Commandant Matt Fitzpatrick, Óglaigh na hÉireann – at his graveside in Drumalee, Co. Cavan.

Matt Fitzpatrick was killed while engaging British enemy forces at Clones Railway Station on Saturday 11th February 1922, an event recorded in history as the ‘Clones Ambush’.
