No Partying With Angels

Michael Corr appeals for more to be done to combat the suicide epidemic in the community where he lives. Michael Corr is a West Belfast resident who feels that mental health services are not fit for purpose.

There is a terrible epidemic in our community folks. Too many of our young people (of course it's not only young people) are dying by suicide.

Too many families have been left without a son, daughter, brother, sister, mother or father. Too many empty chairs at the dinner table and empty desks in the classroom. The knock on effect is horrific. We all have a responsibility to tackle this head on. It's not an isolated issue of course. There are often so many intertwined issues, be it crime, drugs, bullying, abuse and also the knock on from other suicides. There's a huge role for parents: know where your son or daughter is and know what is going on in their life.

A very brave mother who lost her young daughter to suicide last year has spoken out and said what many people have wanted to say, but have not known how to say it or have been afraid to say it. Her words need to be heard.

Suicide does not make you a legend. You will not be partying on. There are no parties with angels. You won't dance forever. All you will be doing is going down a cold, dark hole that you won't come out of, while your family and friends are left devastated and heartbroken with no answers to never ending questions.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Do not suffer alone, don't be silent. Talk to someone, anyone. A friend, a family member or any number of professional organisations.

  1. Michael,

May I respectfully ask, how much do you personally think illegal street drugs have contributed to people taking their own life?
