Sean Larkin Society Launch Centenary Programme With Hike Over Carntogher

The 1916 Societies take a lead and urge people to get on their hike!

On Saturday 20th February, the Sean Larkin Society South Derry held a successful hike over Carntogher Mountain, Maghera.

The event was well attended, both by our own Society and by members of other Societies as well. We extend thanks to all who participated despite terrible weather on the day.

Carntogher Mountain was chosen for its stunning views of the South Derry countryside but also as it holds historical significance, being the location for a series of meetings to gather local support in the run up to the Rising. In more recent times Republicans sought refuge there from the forces of the crown.

The walk was the first in a planned series of events to mark the Centenary of the Rising. We aim to educate local people about the events that occurred in our area at the time as well as to commemorate those that took part.
