The Joe McGarrity Society Carrickmore are holding a 75th Anniversary Commemoration to their namesake on Sunday 9th of August at 6pm sharp, Devesky Road (McGarrity’s homestead), Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone.

Joe McGarrity was born in Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone, of farming stock and strong republican mind. He emigrated to the United States in 1892 at the age of 18, settling in Philadelphia where he went on to become a respectable businessman.

At nineteen he joined Clan na Gael, where he remained a leading light in the organisation until his death. He was involved in Clan activities that provided direct support for the 1916 Rising via arms and funding for the Irish Volunteers.

McGarrity helped sponsor several Irish Race Conventions and founded The Irish Press newspaper, agitating for Irish independence and an end to British rule in Ireland in the years following the Easter Rising.

The Joe McGarrity Society are proud of their namesake’s contribution to the Irish freedom struggle and welcome this opportunity to pay tribute to the man and his enduring legacy this Sunday evening.

All are welcome. For more information contact the Joe McGarrity Society on their Facebook page or get in touch with us directly through this site.
