Vol Neil Lafferty Remembered

The Joseph Plunkett 1916 Society Clady/Glebe will be holding a 40th Anniversary Independent Republican Commemoration for Volunteer Neil Lafferty – Staff Officer West Tyrone Command – Oglaigh na hEireann – on Sunday 26th April at 2.30pm.

Neil Lafferty was a full-time Volunteer in the ranks of the Irish Republican Army, seeing action across many years – from the ’40s Campaign – during which he was interned by the Stormont regime following the ‘Clady Ambush’ – to the most recent phase of the war against British rule in Ireland.

Interned again following his role in an operation on Clady Bridge in December 1973 – which claimed the life of his friend and comrade, Staff Captain Jim McGinn, and in which he himself was wounded – his health declined while in Long Kesh, from where he was released late in 1974 on medical grounds, with only months to live.

Neil Lafferty died at the age of 52 in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry, on 26th April 1975. A highly-respected member of his local community and valued soldier of Oglaigh na hEireann, he will always be remembered by the people in West Tyrone, its hinterlands and beyond.

Fuair se bhas ar son saoirse na hEireann.

Assemble at Clady for 2.15pm on the day, all are welcome. For more information contact the Joseph Plunkett Society on their Facebook page or get in touch with us here on this site.
