Steven Katsineris with an update on Lina Khattab who was sentenced to six months in an Israeli prison. Steven Katsineris is an Australian freelance writer of articles on Palestine, Cyprus and the rest of the Middle East region, political prisoners and human rights, environmental and social issues. Lina Khattab, Palestinian student at Bir Zeit University and folkloric dancer with El Funoun, was sentenced by an Israeli military court at Ofer to six months imprisonment on Monday, 16 February after it convicted her on charges of “throwing stones” and “participating in an unlawful demonstration.” She was also sentenced to 6000 NIS ($1500 USD) fine and three years probation.

Sahar Francis, executive director of Addameer, earlier told the Electronic Intifada that “they treated Lina as if she is so dangerous, such a serious security threat — this is what makes us believe that they are using her case in order to frighten students from being involved in activism.”

Lina Khattab, an 18-year-old student was arrested on 13 December 2014 during a march in solidarity with political prisoners by Bir Zeit University students to Ofer military prison. She was charged on December 18 and had been held in prison since then.

Lina is clearly being held because of her political activity as an active student on campus at Bir Zeit. Samidoun will provide updates and actions to continue the demand to free Lina immediately and unconditionally.
